Bactrian Camels vs Dromedary Camels
Bactrian camels and dromedaries are large ruminating hoof mammals of arid Africa
and Asia known for their ability to go for long periods without drinking.
They have three sets of eyelids and two rows of eyelashes to protect from sand.
These animals are called ships of the desert because they carry very big loads from one
side of the desert to the other. How can we differentiate these two animals?
Appearance
Bactrian camels have two humps. Dromedary camels have only one hump.
If you turn the letter D on its side, you will be able to remember the name of the dromedary camel.
And if you turn the letter B on its side, you will be able to remember the name of the Bactrian camel.
Location
Bactrian camels live in China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan.
Dromedary camels are mostly found in North Africa, India, and Arabia.
Weight
Bactrian camel weighs between 300 to 1000 kilograms.
And the dromedary camel weighs between 300 to 540 kilograms.
Height
The average Bactrian camel has an overall height of 2.13 meters at the hump.
And the dromedary camel has an overall height of 2.13 meters at the hump.
Length
The Bactrian camel has a body length of between 225 to 350 centimeters.
And the dromedary camel has a body length of 219 to 341 centimeters.
Lifespan
The Bactrian camel has a lifespan of roughly 20 to 40 years.
And the dromedary camel has a lifespan of roughly 40 to 50 years.
Speed
These two camels can run at up to 65 kilometers per hour in short bursts,
and sustain speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour.
Food
Bactrian camels are omnivores, but primarily herbivores, and eat various types of plants.
When other nutrient sources are not available, these camels may feed on carcasses,
gnawing on bones, skin, or various different kinds of flesh.
In more extreme conditions, they may eat any material they find,
which has included rope, sandals, and even tents.
Dromedary camels are herbivores, folivores, ruminavores, and their diet consists mostly
of foliage, dry grasses, and desert vegetation, mostly thorny plants.
How long can they go without drinking water?
These camels can survive for long periods of time without food or water.
According to some researchers, they can survive up to three weeks without water.
And they can also drink up to 150 liters of water in one go.
They can also carry up to 270 kilograms on their backs.
What is the hump for?
The humps are not used to store water, as people often think.
They are the animal's fat reserve, which is used as a source of nourishment when food is scarce.
Storing food energy as fat is especially important for camels,
who typically live in the desert, where food sources can be hard to come by.
The longer camels go without food, the more their humps will deflate and droop.
But once camels are able to refuel, the humps re-inflate.
