Hi YouTube. Today we've got an especially awesome video for you. We're going to show
you how to make washing detergent from conkers, aka horse chestnuts. And there's loads of
methods how to do this on the internet, but we're going to show you the simplest, easiest
way, step by step. And we're also going to show you how to preserve them so you can use
this for your washing long-term. Because conkers, they contain natural soap in them,
there's a little chemical in it called saponin, and it completely creates zero waste, it's
sustainable, so it's a great way to do your washing for free, and it's great for the environment,
and it's just a great reason to get out and collect conkers. So come with us, we'll collect
some conkers, we'll show you how to make your own laundry soap. So we've got a whole bag
of conkers, so let's go home and turn them into washing detergent. And we're home. Hi guys. Here
we are, and here's our laundry soap. All right. That's the final result. Foamy. We're going to
show you how to make that from that. Conkers. Look, we've got Steli back. Hi. Okay, so we're
just going to give them a quick rinse off, make sure there's no dirt or anything that
goes into our laundry. Hi. Rinse them off, rinse them off. We chop into fours, and then pop them
into a pot. So now you've chopped them all into fours, we've got to smash them. So we just put
them in a tea towel, cover them up, get them a bit tight. Smash it. Blend your conkers. Hopefully
you have a better blender than me. Okay, so here's all our lovely conkers. We're just going to pick
out some of these big chunky bits of skin. Don't worry about getting all of it out, but just like
these bits are good to fish out. There we go. And then we're going to pop them in the oven just to
dehydrate them, because you'll be able to feel there's a lot of moisture. And to preserve them,
we want to get rid of as much of that moisture as possible. Now remember guys, these are going
in the oven in a baking tray, but that does not mean that you can eat them. Conkers are poisonous,
so don't eat them up. So we're going to dehydrate our conkers. The oven's on the lowest possible
setting. Pop them in. Take them out and check they're not burning. Give them a little shake
up every 15-20 minutes. They're looking good. Three hours later. Okay, it's been three hours.
These are lovely and dry, soapy conkers. So there it is. Here it is, our lovely pot of laundry
conkers. Washer detergent or laundry soap. People call it all different things. I'll just call it
conker soap. Conker soap and super sustainable, super good for the environment. Very excited to
get clean in the clothes. And who knew conkers gave you clean washing. They make natural soaps,
because this really is sustainable and good for the environment. Because even when you buy the
ones that say eco on it and all that stuff, all the ingredients are actually shipped from all
around the world. So you might think, oh, this is nice and green, but actually all in all,
that carbon footprint is pretty big. This is just from up the road. Yeah, this is from up the road.
We used our legs. We can shave out to use it now. We're going to keep it in a tin to keep it fresh
and preserved. And you can put a little rice bag in with it too, if you want to. Yeah. So if you
put the lid on, it'll last for about up to a year. Yeah. So until the conkers come next time. For one
wash, you take one tablespoon of your dried horse chestnut, conker, whatever you want to call it.
And then add about, about a mug's worth of warm water. See that's nice and warm. Probably as warm
as a kid's bath. Wash it in something. Give it a tiny little stir. And then you just leave it for
about 30 minutes to stew like a cup of tea. So whilst we wait for that to stew, here's some we
made earlier. I just want to show you how soapy this is. And this is nothing but conkers and water.
Look, look how soapy it is. Smells nice. Smells like trees. But if you want, you can add essential
oils to it. Once you've made it, it will last for a couple of days in the fridge too. So we made a
So here we are. Our lovely conker laundry detergent mixture. Now we don't want to put in the conkers
in our washing machine because it's going to break it. So we've just got to filter it through.
You can use a sieve or a bit of muslin or anything with fine holes in it, just to catch all your
conkers. So here we have Bjornie's trousers covered in chocolate as always. And we're going
to show you the power of the conker soap. We'll pop them in the wash. I'm going to fill up my drawer more
the merrier. Pop it on the eco wash and away we go. All right, so our washing has finished. Our
quick 28 minute wash and the moment of truth. Let's see if those stains have come out of Bjornie's trousers.
That has. No more stains. Nice and clean. So there we have it. Washing soap made from conkers.
Cheers. Remember guys, not for eating, not for drinking. Conkers are poisonous.
They're good for cleaning, good for many things, but not for drinking. Super good for cleaning. So
here we have it, our laundry detergent. Ready to go to clean our clothes. Amazing. It's sustainable,
eco-friendly, good for the environment. It's free. Yeah, because we all know how much laundry
detergent costs. And it gives you something to do with all them bags of conkers that the kids bring
home all the time. And it's really good to educate the kids on what you put down the plug hole and
what goes into the sea and affects the fishies. Absolutely. So they now know that conkers will
clean their clothes, not chemicals. And the fish will be happy. Exactly. Thanks for watching guys.
Give it a go yourselves. I hope you convert and enjoy your nice clean washing. Yeah.
Thanks for watching. See you all soon. Like, comment, subscribe. Peace.
