The future of home tech is here, and apparently, it costs 20 grand, can barely close a dishwasher,
and needs someone in a VR headset watching your house.
Spending the day with Neo was a bit like spending the day with a toddler learning how to do
things in the world.
Yeah, I'm good.
I'll stick with smart upgrades that do what good design should do.
Make life easier, and your home nicer to live in.
So many homes have lighting that is either blinding at midnight, or feels like a cave
at noon.
Now, I know I've talked about lighting in many of my videos, but if there's one upgrade
to do in your house, it is smart light bulbs.
Lighting is the foundation of every space, and being able to adjust brightness and warmth
instantly changes the mood and how your home feels.
There are many brands to choose from, some more affordable than others, but I personally
like Philips Hue as they're very reliable and produce really beautiful warm light.
Yes, they're pricier, so I usually grab them during Black Friday or whenever they're on
sale.
But when choosing the bulbs, I always skip the full color ones unless you're building
a gaming setup or a movie room.
RGB lighting might look fun, but in a real living room, it feels quite gimmicky unless
you wanna run a private nightclub.
It's also so much more expensive.
I prefer the white ambience, not the basic white-only version.
There's a big difference because the white-only bulbs do not allow you to change the temperature,
which is one of the biggest benefits of having a smart light bulb.
Once you've set them up, experiment with schedules and scenes.
Mine automatically brightens to 4000 Kelvin in the morning and softens to 2700 Kelvin
or under at night, perfect for winding down.
The ability to change your lighting completely changes how your home feels.
And once you've lived with it, you'll wonder how you get by with fixed lamps.
It's almost like having a speaker with no volume control.
And the best part is you can just change the light bulbs in your lamps.
Anyone can do that.
I also like how many accessories are available from the Hue line.
The dimmer switch is great for grouping lamps, especially in bedrooms.
I keep one by the bed and in the living room, so I can turn everything off without getting
up.
Motion sensors are another game-changer.
In our entryway, light comes on when we walk in and turns off a few minutes later, which
is ideal when you're juggling groceries.
We've done the same thing in the bathroom.
It is very handy not having to reach for the light switch.
But more importantly, lights at night that don't wake you up.
Smart bulbs are the perfect example of tech supporting good design.
It is simple, invisible, and useful every day.
If you want to see the exact setup I use, I've linked my mini Philips Hue guide and
shopping list below.
Now let's move on to something that completely transformed our family room.
The Valerion Vision Master Pro 2 projector.
We recently replaced our TV with a roll-out projector screen setup, and it opened up the
space so much.
This room is only about 3 by 4 meters, so removing that big black rectangle made the
whole area feel lighter and way more spacious.
This video is sponsored by Valerion, which worked out well because this setup genuinely
changed how we use this room.
The Vision Master Pro 2 delivers a cinema-level 4K image with over 3000 ISO lumens, brightness,
and Dolby Vision support, so it looks great even during the day.
What surprised me most is how vivid and color accurate the picture is, and the contrast
with enhanced black levels are stunning.
And the setup was unbelievably easy.
It has plenty of built-in tools like auto screen fit, keystone, focus adjustment, and
optical zoom, so you can get the picture perfectly aligned easily.
You can even go up to 300 inches, which is just massive.
I've paired it with a Sonos soundbar and two rear speakers, and together, it is such
an immersive setup, perfect for watching sports or movie nights.
With all the supported formats, it really does feel like a proper cinema experience
at home.
And the best part is how seamlessly it fits into a normal living space.
I can roll the screen down, and suddenly the room goes back to being just a regular family
room again.
If you've been thinking about upgrading your home theater, Valerion's Black Friday
sale is live right now.
They're offering up to $2,698 of bundles, and $700 off the Vision Master Pro 2, which
is the best price of the year.
I'll leave the link in the description box below.
Think about every high-end hotel, restaurant, or spa you've been to.
There's always music playing in the background, right?
That is not random, because sound shapes the atmosphere just like lighting or texture.
A well-designed home doesn't just look good, it feels good, and sound plays a big part
in that.
I personally like Sono speakers for this, as they make it really easy to group multiple
speakers or play the same music all over your house.
You can also group them by rooms, or however you can imagine it to be.
The best part is that you can start small with one speaker, and expand over time.
I got my very first one back in 2016, and now I have 9 of them across the house, in
the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, pretty much everywhere.
The beauty is that they all work wirelessly and very seamlessly.
There's no lag or delay.
The music just flows across the whole system, and it's really amazing.
In my office, I have 2 of them set up as a stereo pair, which means one speaker is playing
as the left channel, and the other one as the right channel, creating a wider, more
immersive sound.
From a design point of view, they also blend in beautifully, so your home still looks calm
and intentional rather than cluttered with gadgets.
If I had to nitpick, the new app can be clunky at times, which I know a lot of people have
complained about.
But they're making some changes to it and it's getting better, so fingers crossed.
That said, the sound quality and reliability make up for it.
Once you've lived with multi-room audio, silence actually feels weird, like walking
into a showroom on mute.
Back in 2023, I once missed a parcel delivery every week for a month.
I had to keep driving to my local post office and waste my time queuing there.
That is when I finally bought a video doorbell, and it was one of the best purchases ever,
which you can get for under $100.
Besides the obvious security benefits, as the camera automatically records whenever
someone approaches, it has genuinely made day-to-day life more convenient.
When someone rings, you get an instant notification on your phone and can speak directly to them
through the doorbell.
That alone has saved me so many unnecessary trips to the post office.
It also connects to my Google Home display, so I see who's at the door without stopping
what I'm doing, and it saves me time from not having to deal with door-to-door salesmen.
For the price, it is one of those small upgrades that just makes daily life easier.
Very few people actually like cleaning, but most would like a clean home.
That is why I love robot vacuums, because having a clean home without having to do it
yourself is very satisfying.
I've had robot vacuums since 2017, and the difference between then and now is night and
day.
Back then, they were loud, clumsy, and often got tangled in cables or hair.
The one we use now from Narwhal actually does everything it promises.
It vacuums quietly, mobs streak-free all the way to the edges, and even dodges shoes and
wires on its own.
It is also tangle-free, so I no longer have to deal with cutting hair from the vacuum's
brush.
So far, it is the only vacuum that, when on, doesn't scare our kittens.
I schedule it to vacuum daily and mob twice a week, and our floor stays spotless with
zero effort.
Now, for anyone wondering if it is worth it, absolutely yes.
Clean floors instantly make a space feel calmer and more put-together, and automating that
part of your routine frees up so much time and mental energy.
Smart plugs do have limited use cases, but in those use cases, they can be very useful.
They are small and affordable, usually $10-15 each, and can turn almost any ordinary appliances
into a smart one.
Many people use them seasonally, like for Christmas trees or outdoor lights, so they
turn on and off automatically.
But there are plenty of practical everyday uses too.
I use one in my studio for a big video light tucked in the corner that is hard to reach.
Instead of crawling behind furniture, I just open the app and tap a button.
If you buy one that is Matter-compatible, you can integrate it with Apple HomeKit or
Google Home and build simple automations.
For example, mine turns on the bathroom heater when motion is detected, and shuts it off
10 minutes after no movement.
Many smart plugs also track energy usage, which is great if you want to see how much
power your appliances draw.
It won't change your life, but they do make some daily routines a bit easier.
There's nothing better than walking into a perfectly cool home on a hot day, or a warm
one on a freezing morning.
That is exactly what a smart thermostat or AC system does.
It keeps your home comfortable on autopilot.
In the US, smart thermostats like Nest and Ecobee are everywhere.
In Australia, they are less common, because many homes use split-system ACs, many of which
already have smart features built in.
Either way, I think they are both an upgrade that is really worth it.
Some smart systems can learn your routine, and most can adjust the temperature when you
leave or return.
And pre-cool or pre-heat the house before you walk in.
That means lower energy bills, and a more comfortable space that is always the right
temperature.
I have a smart inverter AC from LG, which connects through Wi-Fi and its own app.
I can turn it on before I get home, set a schedule, or switch it off if I forget.
If you already have a regular split AC, you don't need to replace it entirely.
You can add a smart controller like Sensible or Tado, to get the same features like scheduling,
automation, even voice control.
If your Wi-Fi drops every time you walk downstairs, or your video calls freeze in the one corner
you actually use, you need mesh Wi-Fi.
Instead of one single box trying to cover your whole home, a mesh system uses multiple
small units that work together to create one seamless network, without running cables or
drilling holes.
Now, mesh Wi-Fi isn't the answer to every problem.
If you live in a small apartment, or already have great coverage, a single good router
might be enough.
But, for bigger homes, or multi-story homes, it is a total game changer.
I've been to friends and family's home where the internet is just so slow due to poor Wi-Fi
coverage, and it's just so frustrating.
We use the TP-Link DecoMesh system, and it's been rock solid and easy to use.
The app shows exactly which device is connected where.
I've placed one unit upstairs and one downstairs, and the coverage is perfect.
There are plenty of other good options, like Eero, Netgear, Google, or Ubiquiti.
Just do a bit of research and find out which one's available in your region.
The other option which I see a lot of people do, is to use a repeater instead of mesh Wi-Fi.
But, they are slow and unreliable, due to technical reasons that I won't go into here.
It's much better to get a mesh Wi-Fi system, and you can easily add more units in different
sections of the house.
I'm going to end this video with smart blinds.
It's not something that I personally have in my own house, but I've installed them in
client projects before, and they loved them.
In the right setting, they're very convenient and useful for so many reasons.
If you've ever had to roll down 5 blinds one by one just to block the sun, you'll understand
the appeal of smart blinds.
It takes so much effort just doing that, and then you have to roll them back up again.
It gets tiring, but having the motorized makes your life that much easier, because all you
need to do is click a button.
They're also very useful for hard-to-reach spots like clerestory windows or skylights.
A motorized honeycomb blind for a skylight allows you to control light and also provide
thermal insulation.
The other thing I love about smart blinds is how they can improve your sleep routine.
You can schedule them to open gradually over the span of 5 to 10 minutes in the morning,
so you wake up naturally with sunlight instead of an alarm.
It is such a calm way to start the day and genuinely better for your circadian rhythm.
I've experienced it in quite a few hotels and I wake up more energized.
You can also do the same thing with curtains by installing motorized curtains or get a
device like the SwitchBot Smart Curtain Opener to gradually open the curtains in the morning.
It's not something everyone needs, but if you have lots of windows or love the idea
of waking up gently to sunlight, smart blinds and curtains are worth considering.
