Pineapple is a tropical fruit native to South America
In this farm about 75 million pineapples are harvested every year
Workers manually harvest pineapples and carefully place them on the conveyor belt
Specialized machines peel pineapples removing the outer skin and core
After being peeled the pineapples go to a slicing machine
But have you ever wondered how the most delicious pineapples in the world are produced
That's what we'll see together in this video

The farms of Costa Rica are known for growing the most delicious pineapples
High quality mangoes usually have a higher sugar
content which ensures a sweeter and juicier flavor
The sugar concentration is a key factor in the quality of the fruit
This variety is chosen precisely because it offers superior aromas flavors and textures
All the process begins with soil preparation Agricultural
machines are used to plow and cultivate the land
Breaking up the crust of the top layer improving
aeration and facilitating nutrient absorption
At this stage the cultivation areas are also leveled
ensuring proper drainage and preventing water accumulation
An essential point for the pineapple plant which is very sensitive to waterlogging
For this reason it is common to create raised planting beds
This allows excess rainwater to drain easily
between the rows without damaging the plant roots
At this stage fertilizers can also be incorporated into the soil to improve its structure
Providing pineapples with the essential nutrients for healthy growth
To help retain soil moisture and prevent rodents and
insects from entering a plastic sheet is laid over the beds
Pineapple is a multiple fruit formed by the fusion of
hundreds of small flowers that make up an inflorescence
Each flower produces a small individual fruit and all of them join
together during development giving rise to the single fruit we know
Commercial pineapple cultivation is mainly done through vegetative
means that is using parts of the plant itself instead of seeds
The mother plant is formed from the crown of the ripe fruit
which after being planted develops roots and begins to grow
As the months pass this plant begins to produce natural shoots
the lateral seedlings that grow at the base near the ground
The shoots that emerge along the central stem
These shoots are very valuable for cultivation
Because they carry the same genetic material as the parent plant
ensuring standardization in the field and uniformly high-quality fruits
When they reach the ideal size the shoots are carefully
selected and cut from the mother plant and then
taken to the final planting location
where they will form new plantations
Although machines prepare the land the planting
of pineapples is almost always done manually
On the plastic sheeting the seedlings are planted with the help of a small shovel
It is not alone previously prepared and kept moist until rooting
The typical spacing is 30 to 40 centimeters
between plants with two rows per bed
To ensure good air circulation and space for growth
The planting is done with selected shoots to have similar size and weight
This ensures that all plants grow together and uniformly
allowing the harvest to take place almost at the same time
It increases production efficiency
During the first few months after planting
It is essential to keep the soil moist for the healthy growth of plants
Large producers cultivate around 75 million pineapples every year
Approximately eight months after planting
In some regions artificial induction of flowering is
common Using an agricultural sprayer ethylene is applied
A natural gas that stimulates full flowering
It's as if the gas is telling the plants that it's time to start developing the fruits
After floral induction the plant begins to form small flowers in the center of the leaf rosette
The stem that supports this cluster of flowers is gradually
thickening creating the base where the fruit will develop
As the stem thickens all these small flowers merge and form the pineapple
This process takes several weeks
It takes about 18 months from planting until the pineapple is ready to be harvested
Farmers visually assess and conduct maturity
tests to determine the optimal time for harvesting
They perform sugar and flavor tests using a device
called a refractometer and assess the quality of the pulp
This stage is crucial to ensure delicious and ready-to-eat pineapples
Pineapples are usually ripe and ready for harvest about 18 to 24 months after planting
At this stage the fruits are about 30 centimeters in size and weigh around 2 kilograms
Unlike many fruits the pineapple does not continue to ripen after being harvested
Workers play a very important role in the pineapple harvesting process
This is a crucial moment as properly conducted harvesting ensures the final quality of the fruit
This process is done manually because using machines could hurt and damage the fruit
The implementation of specialized technology such as the harvester arm
has been helping many pineapple producers during the harvesting season
The machine gradually moves across the field ensuring that each pineapple is selected with precision and harvested with care
Workers use a special technique to remove pineapples from the stems
without damaging the fruits Proper handling ensures higher quality fruits
Since pineapple is very sensitive to impacts that can cause bruises compromising the fruit's health
The harvested fruit is placed on a conveyor belt and then deposited into a large crate
Some farms store pineapples upside down This is because the fruit 's
crown provides natural cushioning ideal for transportation
Although most of these pineapples are destined for processing the
largest and most beautiful ones will be sold whole as export products
When they arrive at the factories pineapples go through a washing and cleaning process
To remove any soil residues insects and other contaminants
The fruits are submerged in water to remove dust and impurities that may be on the surface
Inside the tank pineapples float and are carried by the water current to conveyor belts
This factory processes 140 000 tons of pineapples per year
Cashews are classified according to their quality size and appearance
Those that meet the established standards for the consumer market
They are separated from those intended for processing which
are the fruits that do not have the appropriate size or quality
Then whole pineapples go through a wax bath
A fundamental step to preserve their moisture and keep them fresh during transportation
When the wax cools and hardens it forms a layer that creates a protective barrier
This slows down the fruit's deterioration process ensuring
that pineapples arrive healthy at their destination for export
The selected pineapples are carefully boxed and labeled
The staff pack the whole pineapples separately
Those who have crowns are destined for export
The boxes are stored in cold storage to maintain freshness
Refrigerated storage helps extend the shelf life of pineapples and preserve their quality
The unsold pineapples have their crowns cut
off and are sent to processing industries
Where they will be peeled cut and chopped to be canned or crushed for juice production
When they arrive at the canning factory the pineapples are selected
They go through a washing process to remove any dirt or surface residue
Then specialized machines peel the pineapples
Removing the outer shell and the core
After peeling the pineapples go to a slicing machine which
produces slices slightly more than one centimeter thick
A medium pineapple yields about seven to eight slices
Employees check the quality of the slices
If there is still skin on the fruits before putting them in the cans
To keep pieces the slices are cut into smaller pieces
These pieces are evenly distributed in the cans
leaving enough space for the preserving liquid
After filling the cans are hermetically
sealed to prevent the entry of contaminants
After being sealed the cans undergo a thermal sterilization process
Usually in autoclaves to ensure long-term preservation
Then they are cooled and ready to be sent to the consumer market
Fresh pineapple in a can the entire process takes only 20 minutes
