Simple Machines – Screws

You've probably seen this scene before. A person lines up two pieces of wood, grabs a screwdriver, places a screw, and twists it in place. Suddenly, those two pieces become firmly locked together. But how does a simple twist create such a strong grip? A screw is a type of simple machine. It looks like a nail with grooves called threads spiraling around it. When you turn the screw, these threads help push or pull the screw through a material, like wood or plastic, with much less force than if you tried to shove it straight in. We use screws more often than you might realize. Jar lids twist on and off using screw threads. A light bulb fits into its socket the same way. Even a car jack uses a large screw to lift a heavy vehicle off the ground. Underneath these grooves is a clever concept. An inclined plane wrapped in a spiral. By turning the screw, you spread out the effort over a longer distance, making it easier to secure or lift objects. So next time you see a screw at work, whether it's turning on a faucet or grinding pepper, remember it's one of the most effective simple machines around. It's a small invention with a big impact on our everyday tasks.
