Welcome to the Simply French Podcast
And this is the subject of our lesson today
After the morning routine we will talk about the evening routine
It's a great idea
The evening routine is very important to be in shape the next day
Yes and it's an A2 level French lesson very comprehensive
We will use the present tense to describe our habits
The past tense to tell about last night's evening
and the near future to talk about our plans for this evening
Listen carefully and practice with us
Repetition is the key Let's go
Then Amélie the first question
You come home after work
You open the door
The first thing I do is very simple I put my bag on
the floor take off my shoes and lie down on the couch
Then I take my phone and check my messages Instagram and the news
Okay So your first action is to rest on the couch with your phone
The verb is "to rest " It is a reflexive verb
My routine is a bit different
Ah yes Tell us Victor what's your zen routine
When I arrive I don't touch my phone
It's a personal rule
First I change I take off my work clothes and put on comfortable clothes
A jog a T-shirt
Then to relax I listen to some music
Classical music or jazz It's very calming
The verb is "to relax "
Okay These are three very important verbs for the evening
Yes So we are going to compare our two routines
I change and listen to music
You rest on the couch
Amélie question Do I check my phone when I get home
No you are not looking at your phone You are listening to music to relax
And you do you change when you arrive
No not yet First the sofa that's the priority
And you when you get home what is your first action
Are you resting Are you listening to music
A long pause of five seconds for the listener to think
Everyone has their little habits
After resting something very important happens
I'm hungry It's dinner time
Yes dinner What do you usually do for dinner
Usually in the evening I am tired I don't have much
courage to cook So often I order something to eat
A pizza some sushi a Thai dish
I understand it's easy and quick
I like cooking in the evening it relaxes me
I prepare a simple and healthy meal
Okay that's very
different You cook I order
Do you order a pizza in the evening Victor
No very rarely I really prefer cooking
It's cheaper and better for your health
After dinner when you've eaten well it's time for real relaxation
Yes after dinner I read a book I like silence
and stories it's my calm moment of the day
I don't read in the evening I watch a series on
Netflix or Disney+ I love
series it's my passion
Are you on the Book team like Victor or the Series team like Amélie in the evening
So if we recap our typical evening right now
I Victor am coming back changing clothes listening to music cooking my dinner and reading a book
And you Amélie
I Amélie am coming back I relax on the couch
with my phone I order my dinner and watch a series
Our routines are very different but both are relaxation routines
Okay that's the usual routine
But now let's talk about a specific evening
Let's talk about last night
To talk about yesterday we must use the passé composé
Ah the passé composé with avoir and être
Exactly for a finished action in the past
Then Amélie what did you do last night
Last night oh my Victor it was a special evening
I have started a new series a Spanish series
I watched the first episode it was great
Then I watched the second episode it was even better
Then the third the fourth
Wait wait how many episodes have you watched in total
In total last night I watched six episodes
Six I didn't even notice the time passing
When I was done I looked at my clock it was three in the morning
Then I quickly removed my makeup brushed my
teeth and went to bed I slept only four hours
Six episodes I understand better why you're tired today
You spent the whole night watching TV
Yes I watched a lot of episodes and went to bed very late
What did you do last night Tell me about your quiet evening
I had a very normal very quiet evening
I cooked a carrot soup it was delicious
After dinner I read my book for an hour
Then I called my parents and we talked a bit
And at eleven o'clock I went to bed
Wow It's like day and night While I was watching my show you read and called a friend
Yes Amélie did I watch TV last night
No you didn't watch TV you read a book
Did you cook last night
No I didn't cook I ordered a pizza
Think about last night What did you do
Did you work Did you see friends
Try to make a sentence in your head using the past tense
A long pause
Amélie since you stayed up very late yesterday you're tired today That's normal
I have a proposition for you a little challenge for this evening
There there a challenge I like challenges
To talk about tonight or tomorrow we use the near future
The structure is very simple it is the verb "aller" in the present tense plus the infinitive of the main verb
For example this evening I am going to eat fish
Okay let's go with the infinitive I'll try What's the challenge
The challenge is simple but maybe difficult for you
Tonight you're going to try not to watch a series just for one night
Instead you're going to read a book just a few pages say ten pages
And most importantly you're going to go to bed before midnight
Hmm not a series at all Ten pages from a book going to bed before midnight
Okay Victor this is a good challenge I accept
Tonight I'm going to try I'm going to read my book and go to bed earlier
Great I'm very happy So a question to check
Tonight are you going to watch six episodes of your show
No tonight I'm not going to watch a show I'm going to read
What am I going to do tonight
You're going to do your usual routine
You will cook you will read and you will go to bed at eleven o'clock
Exactly my quiet routine
And you what are you going to do tonight
Are you going to watch TV Are you going to read Are you going to go out
Make a sentence in your head using the near future
And there you go We now have the three verb tenses to talk about our evening routine
The present tense for habits
The passé composé for yesterday
And the near future for this evening
Come on It's the best exercise for memorizing
everything Okay Amélie Dinner
Normally in the evening you order a pizza
Present
Yes normally I do
And what did you do last night
Past tense
Last night I ordered sushi
And this evening what are you going to do near future
Tonight I am going to cook pasta
Very good Now the activities after dinner
Normally in the evening you watch series
Present
Yes that's my habit I watch series
And what did you do last night Past tense
Last night I watched six episodes of my favorite series
And what are you going to do tonight future
Tonight is the challenge I will read a book
Perfect And for sleep
Normally you go to bed at midnight Present
Yes normally I go to bed at midnight or later
And last night what time did you go to bed Past tense
I went to bed at three in the morning last night
And this evening what time are you going to bed Proudly
Tonight I'm going to bed at eleven o'clock I hope
Congratulations Amélie And congratulations to you our listeners
You now have all the tools to talk about your evening routine
Yes it was a very comprehensive and very useful lesson
Your final mission is a small writing exercise
Please write two sentences in the comments
One sentence about your party yesterday using the past tense
And a sentence about your evening tonight with the near future
For example last night I read a book Tonight I am going to watch a movie
We can't wait to read your plans for the evening
Thank you very much for your attention and patience
Thank you all Keep practicing Have a great evening and goodbye
Good evening Goodbye
