Frédéric François Chopin (1 March 1810 – 17 October 1849) was a Romantic-period Polish composer and virtuoso pianist who primarily wrote for solo piano. He is renowned worldwide as one of the leading composers of his era, with a "poetic genius that was unparalleled in his generation".

The first mazurka of the Op. 24 set is in G minor, marked Lento. The piece soon modulates to the relative major key of B-flat major, which then shifts to the closely related key of E-flat major.
