I've been teaching life skills and safety to our 18 year old son with level 3 nonverbal autism
Here JJ is making himself chicken nuggets and fries with minimum verbal prompts
He requires substantial support and the goal isn't always total independence
But rather maximum participation which will eventually lead to independence
There you go. Perfect. He's progressing very well, but it'll take some time before he can do this completely on his own
Patience is the key and he will get there when he's ready
To ready him for independence. He always cleans his area. He throws away his trash and washes his hands when he's done
Here I'm talking to JJ about street safety
Which includes watching a video and the importance of looking both ways before crossing a street
And finally, I work with JJ to help him find ways to self calm when he feels anxiety
