Do you have anything that serves as a counterbalance to photography
What do you do when you want to unwind
Ah right that’s good
I haven't found the switch yet either
There's nothing that stands out
to me at that moment I really enjoy
watching movies though that's naturally based on visual appeal
And photography ultimately is just that to me Can you
just look at it without
constantly analyzing everything
Yes I already enjoy that differently
But when I'm outside
I'm truly not in the jungle in terms of perception
but rather more focused
So I'm constantly checking
Where is what where is the gesture how
are the hands and somewhere there 's
always something You've also photographed the chair here a few times
Exactly the chair
There was such beautiful light here just a little while ago
Yes but that's normal
It always works It's not
stressful for me at all in
fact it's very very pleasant
For others it might be
exhausting to be with me
but when we talk I always
glance back now and then
Is anything else happening there
does anyone else come in or
something like that That's normal
It's just one of those things
I can't get rid of that either
Yes but you probably need it or
perhaps one needs it just to keep going
If you don't have that drive
I see it the same way many people also
ask me can you learn this
kind of thing and so on
I'm absolutely convinced that it can be learned
Up to 95% the remaining 5% is simply personality
what he has experienced in life his educational background and
whether he enjoys graphics or
focuses solely on street portraits
But photography ultimately
Up to a certain point it is definitely
learnable—provided one is willing
to commit Naturally you have to want it and be genuinely interested
Of course you can't just tell anyone you're now going to
do photography and expect to
succeed up to a certain point
If you stick with it
But there has to be interest involved
If there's no interest you won't make progress either
That's perfectly clear
But if someone is interested and invests the time and also
seeks feedback or mentors along
the way they'll go very very far
Relatively quick and very far-reaching
And as I said the last 5% are just
Especially nowadays with the internet
you can basically learn anything quickly
or doing workshops and stuff like that
That's truly the case
It was definitely much harder back then twenty years ago
But I'm also grateful that I
As I mentioned back then I was still
shooting films in Tokyo twenty years ago
You wouldn't do it anymore would you Film Is it
over for you Basically
yes because it just doesn't make sense to me anymore
Because I'm in viewing mode For many that's a
form of slowing down But
I'm already slowed down
I'm in the zone
I'm happy Everything's great Why should I
hold myself back when I'm
in my flow It makes no sense to me
That it makes sense to others is also clear to me
This is naturally a threefold deceleration
when suddenly one only has 36 images left
But if there's no other way I'd be willing to shoot photos too
Then I'd just have to bring along a backpack full of film as well
I'm already really happy with the digital aspect it quickly brought me
up to a certain level and now it's obviously
great being able to shoot quickly
and immediately see what has been done whether
there are any errors if the focus point is correct
You showed me the same excerpt last year
exactly how you'd crop it
That way you can already tell if it works
That's why I always feel the photos are already fully finished in
my mind It's become second nature
now It just works the way I do it
Do you think you'll ever
grow in any other direction
in the future or do you
believe it'll more likely be No
You can already see it from the line extensions
I leave these paths very very often
Or the picture I showed you earlier with the snail
I also take macro shots of flowers forks or things like that
I really enjoy photographing in the macro realm I'd also
love to try doing portraits or something similar someday
But right now I'm still figuring things out
I'm having a great time being outdoors
There's still so much I want to explore
And then I'd get lost
But I'm already quite broad in my approach
Photographically I also shoot nature
Light and shadow and the leaves I see here now I already
perceive all of this That would
actually be quite interesting
Just a macro series like that
But in the same style you're doing street now
Only in miniature
Experimentally I'm completely open
On one hand that's one of my strengths—seeing things from
different perspectives You might
wonder how does he see it this way
Or by extending the line
It's simply a process that continues
to unfold further over the years
I have absolutely no concerns about that
But you're not actively thinking about it all the time are
you What will it be like in twenty years right
No not at this stage It's
also interesting I'm not really thinking
much about the next steps
in my photography A motto like that
Maybe you should focus more on that direction and work toward
developing some series there and
then immediately turn one into a book
Just like Michael Wolf
did—always photographing
those people pushed into Tokyo's subway trains
And it's stuck to the glass
He only photographed it for two to three months
He selected the two hundred best images from it
He sent it to his publisher and said "Turn this into a book "
Technically it would probably better to do so and thus more likely to succeed
To produce books as well
But with me it works differently
I'm so versatile that I still think
Around the next corner is the highlight shot
I'm still utterly curious
I still absolutely love going out
That has truly changed over the past
20 years especially in the last decade
when I've genuinely started trusting my inner gut feeling more than ever
Right at the edit stage when you go through the images later
It's always hard to say which photo is the best
You walk through and think there was nothing to it I go through
relatively quickly and everything that's more or less good
Gets a G in front of it from me and slides upward
My Leica photos usually all
start with an L If I
put a G in front of it now it moves up That's all there is to it
I could also do this in Lightroom using a one-star rating right now
First go through all the images
Let's say I took 100 photos today
Go through them and look
any pictures that are
this good get a 1 Then I'll go through the ones marked 1
Those I think are better get a 2
At the end maybe five more images that get a 3
I'll only edit the 3s
Everything else is set aside Why should I bother
with that But are you
saving all these images today
I'm saving the one under Today's Events
But the point is I'm not handling these three
I personally don't work on them
Special ones I pack under the motto "well "
What do we have now September October
These are the good ones from October
Sometime I'll go into the good ones from October
and think which of the 20 is
superb the ones I made in October
And the first one I might work on it
I try to keep as little as possible on the screen preferring
instead to shoot outdoors Of the
images I take I select just one
There's really a lot of gut instinct involved in that
I still find myself looking at it and thinking
somehow it's awesome I just think it's awesome
That's actually true Sometimes you realize
that eventually The important thing
is that you personally find the image
appealing at first For me right now
Then I edit it do the cut
add a bit of color saturation
or decide between
black and white or color—things like that
Then I'll post it on Instagram
and see what the response is like
Have you ever looked at a photo and just had no feeling for it no real connection
And then later realized actually it's a real standout
Yes exactly
But more likely to be rare
Yes it's more likely to be rare
But I have a gut feeling about it
because I'm human too and I
think okay let's see how this
works I like it but there's a lot of graphics involved
and absolutely insane extremely complex
Then I think it's just too much
Then there are pictures where I think let me check how it works
Sometimes they even go through the ceiling
at's something I never would have expected
I'm always like this okay
maybe it really should go that way after all
But in the end I always rely on my gut instinct That means
I still go on my usual rounds
and keep doing my usual things
The coincidences we've witnessed today with this
black-and-white quality simply can't be planned
That a woman is standing there in a black-and-white
checkered pattern in front of a building also with windows
Bends down slightly gathers it all
up The thing about the wheelchair
under the rain where you think you're not taking any photos at all
No there's someone sitting under the tree—only the
wheels are visible and you think wow what a bizarre scene
Or at the fish market with those
certain things that happened the one who
carried the plants there That was also funny
Just quickly go down against the light snap
That's already three shots I'd say
based on gut feeling today nice
I just checked the camera briefly
Okay it was still nice
Today I definitely had about 3 good
The nice check
Yes the net check I've definitely taken about three good photos
today That would already be something
if you think on a grand scale
In the motto one picture per month—that should probably be top
Now today I have three and I've got a strong gut feeling about them
It's a nice day
And yes
But don't you also have days when
You must have days when absolutely nothing goes right
Nothing's really happening I hardly have that at all
The thing is when I'm taking photos I also see what's there
That doesn't mean the others can't see anything
But it's just not good enough
Or perhaps I have a certain decent level
I'm always looking for the amplitudes here
The upward spikes
I've already reached a certain level where I always notice something
Sometimes it doesn't work
Or else the entire day won't work
And it's all just like that
But as I said then come the days
when two or three will arrive at once
And that's why after
photographing for twenty years now you simply know
you must keep going—and the next great photo will come automatically
Since the level is already fairly good with me it's just
well-practiced so I don't
have any major worries about it
That means no good photos will come out from now on
Are you out on the street every day or how often do you go out
At the beginning during those first ten years I was
truly all-in I already did
some serious stuff back then
The day I truly experienced Paris Traveling
by TGV to London Not just one day but
a whole week in Paris Then a week in London
followed by another week back in Paris
By train by Eurostar
But then truly just kept it simple
with a 21-euro hotel near the Stade de France
But I really trained extremely well there
I just went ahead and did my thing
I practiced and trained obsessively completely
unaware even then where it was all heading
I never planned on giving workshops or anything like that later on It wasn't part
of the plan
And now everything has just fallen into place so easily
And now how often a week are you out
Mostly weekends
Because right now that other matter is taking up a lot of space
You really have to plan ahead book in advance and keep shifting things around
But I always try to go out again in the afternoon
and things like that
I've already managed to establish
a fairly solid structure there
So if possible let's go over it once more
And otherwise mostly on weekends
As I said the fish market for nearly 20 years
So I could probably write a book about it without even trying
