H.M. Queen Mary, in collaboration with the Royal Danish Collection, has decided to have a new mounting created for parts of the rose-cut diamond set—one of the four iconic jewelry sets among the Danish Crown Jewels—so that in the future the beautiful rose-cut diamonds can be worn as a tiara. In doing so, Queen Mary continues the proud tradition of earlier queens of adapting the Crown Jewels to the fashion and use of their time—naturally with respect for history and the exquisite craftsmanship that characterizes the Danish Crown Jewels. This ensures that the rose-cut set can be worn to a much greater extent at royal occasions, which was precisely the original intention when the Danish Crown Jewels were established through the will of Queen Dowager Sophie Magdalene in 1746.
The Rosenstens set is one of the four sets that form part of
the crown jewels and are located deep beneath Rosenborg Castle
It is the Rosenstens collection which we have now brought new life together with the Queen
as been instrumental in transforming and attaching this
long chain which is part of the Rosenstens set to a frame
so it can be worn as a crown
It is a historic event
It hasn't happened in 180 years that anyone has gone
in and reformed or transformed part of the crown jewels
The long chain which is part of the Rosenstens set
was actually created as a kind of belt a visual as it's called
and designed to be worn by women around their corseted
waists Nowadays women no longer wear corseted dresses
The idea actually arose because this particular
image hadn't been used for a very long time
We know that Queen Louise is depicted wearing
it around her waist with approximately seven to eight pieces on a portrait
We can see that from a portrait but
otherwise this belt has largely not been used
Thus the idea emerged about what could be done to give this belt a new lease on life
These are incredibly beautiful stones and remarkably large rose-cut diamond facets
something wonderful with a long history behind it So
what could be done
The idea emerged of creating a mounting frame
so it could be worn as a crown
The diadem was crafted in close collaboration with the Queen and a goldsmith
It hasn't been an easy challenge for the goldsmith as
the task was to preserve the very beautiful settings
These exquisite diamonds are set here Looking from the
back one can truly appreciate the remarkable goldsmithing
and they are all numbered so the chain can always be reestablished at any time
the proper order if I may say so
The challenge was simply that we didn't want touch either the fittings or the connections
So the mounting frame has actually worked out
Stones or diamonds if you prefer—that’s probably the most accurate term to use
edder jo Rosensten in relation to the fact that they are carved in a particular way
They have this historic cutting style where at most 24 facets are used
22 or 24 facets compared to a slightly more modern cutting style
with as many as 58 facets or girdles
That actually gives a much greater sparkle compared to what's known as brilliant cutting
So this is indeed a Rosensten cut which is why it's called the Rosensten Set
If you take a closer look at these stones in the crown or the necklace
Thus one can see that they are actually all
different and they truly are because each has its own distinct history
It was Queen Caroline Amalie who in 1840 took various stones from the crown jewels
And a German company created this set
So these were stones with a different history
Some of them were bequeathed to the crown jewels by Queen Dowager Sophie Maudline
André was bequeathed to the crown estates by the
unmarried Princess Charlotte Amalie who was sister to Christian VI
So they all have different stories
Men were gathered into this group the Rosenstensættet between 1840 and 1842
The diadem mounting bracket that is the
mounting bracket where these 25 diamonds are set
It was naturally designed in dialogue with the queen
but otherwise created by goldsmith Mattias Hasbro Dinesen
The statue is cast in white gold
And so he basically created these little clusters
one might almost call them shaped like small kroner
So just tighten these diamonds securely onto the holder
Exceptional craftsmanship once again presenting the challenge
We didn’t need to go in and ruin the original
fittings but it turned out really nicely
In addition to this long chain the Rosenstensættet also includes
a very beautiful and impressive cross-shaped jewelry piece
We've seen Dr Margrethe wear it a few times both
in its full form and in a slightly smaller version
The great thing is we've now added an extra crown to the royal jewels
Previously only the Smerats set had a diadem
but now we've also acquired the Rosenstens Diadem
And it's truly wonderful to expand the opportunities for using the Crown Jewels
The Crown Jewels which are truly something special
It's living cultural heritage These are jewels that have
been passed down by Danish queens for 300 to 400 years
They do have a story a tale of their
own A story that is now being expanded
And with it we have acquired the new Rosenstens
Diadem adding a new chapter to the royal jewels
It is of course the Queen's choice when she wishes to wear the Rosenstierne Diadem again
But it would be on special occasions
at royal state dinners or major historical events within the royal family
Otherwise the crown is typically visible on a daily basis
and the other parts of the crown jewels stored in the vaults deep beneath Rosenborg Castle
