Teyana Taylor talks about winning her first Golden Globe for her role in One Battle After Another, being nominated for a Grammy for her album Escape Room and fighting Ben Affleck in the film The Rip.
Tiana Taylor, who is hotter than you right now?
Come on.
Oh, my God.
Thank you for coming back on the show.
Thank you for having me.
I want to show you on the cover right now of Vanity.
Ooh.
Look at Tiana.
Gorgeous.
Thank you.
How was that?
It's got to feel good to dress up as Statue
of Liberty and being a New Yorker.
Yes, right?
It was such a full circle moment.
I was really sitting here while the torch was burning.
Like, I was kind of scared it was going to burn my hand off.
But I was like, I was like, oh, my God.
I can't believe I'm really on the cover.
It's just, it was such a full circle moment,
especially as a New Yorker.
I was so emotional throughout the shoot.
I had to, like, really stop and say, this is really happening.
This is really happening.
It's all really happening.
And you're perfect timing for this magazine
because you just won a Golden Globe.
Yes.
Tiana.
Thank you.
You were phenomenal.
One battle after another.
It's unbelievable.
It's so, I told you because I know you,
but you've sang on the show before,
and you're the nicest person.
Tiana's nice off camera to everybody in the whole crew.
Always.
We love you.
Thank you.
I love you.
You really are.
And you play a totally different character in this movie.
And I was like, I was afraid of you.
I always find it so funny when I read certain comments.
They're like, she ain't doing nothing
but acting like herself.
I'm like, little do they know, I am a marshmallow.
I don't want to hurt myself.
Exactly.
Never.
Of course.
But this is, a lot of people talk the talk.
And they go, oh, we won, I won an award.
That's really cool.
One step better.
You brought the Golden Globe here.
Yes.
I knew you wanted to see it.
Come on.
This is what I'm talking about.
Come on, honey.
No, literally when I got it, I was like,
I'm taking this straight to Jimmy.
I knew you wanted to see it.
I'm taking it straight to Jimmy.
There it is.
Look, it says Golden Globes right there.
It's heavy.
It's got a good weight.
That's what I said on stage.
I think I might have cursed by accident, too.
I was like, this is heavy.
You have great speed.
Thank you.
What happened?
It was the first award of the night.
Did you freak out?
Did you go like, did you just black out and go,
I don't know where I am?
Yes, because I didn't know it was
the first award of the night.
So I was like, rocking back and forth.
Like, my heart was pounding.
Like, I just didn't know what to expect.
To the first one up, you're like, this is going to like,
this is going to, I mean, this could ruin your whole night.
And it's like, as the envelope opened,
it just go faster and faster.
Yeah, yeah.
And then you got it.
Come on, you just crushed it.
You know how to do it.
Thank you.
I loved your speech.
Thank you.
I loved your speech.
Did you, were you nervous when you read it?
Or did you go, I had to write a speech?
I was actually so mad because I left out a whole paragraph.
But I didn't, I was trying to beat the embarrassment.
I was like, if this music start playing on me,
like, I am going to melt on this stage.
Like, you know how that music plays?
Some people still talk like, and yeah, and shout out to
boop, boop, boop.
All right, thank you.
This way.
Come on.
No, Tiana, come on this way.
Not this way.
This way.
Not this way.
Thank you.
But you did it, and you nailed it.
I never wanted to be that person.
That was perfect, though.
Did you get good feedback from everybody from the speech?
Oh, my God.
It was amazing.
Like, everybody was all teary-eyed.
PTA was teary-eyed.
I was just like, oh.
And when I watched the back, he was like this.
Yeah, you seen the little lip quiver?
I was like, oh, he's so proud.
He's so proud.
So proud.
I know your table was, everyone was like,
that was the table to be at.
Because of how energy.
Yeah, we was lit.
We was lit.
And then there was some, at one point,
Leonardo DiCaprio was very animated,
had a conversation with someone.
And he was, like, doing this.
And if you haven't seen it, take a look at this.
Yeah.
What is he doing, dude?
What is he doing?
He's so funny.
Who is he talking to?
OK, so look.
Yesterday, I thought I broke the Da Vinci code, right?
They was like, yeah, so he's talking to Tiana.
Now, K-pop Demon Hunters won.
And my kid's favorite song is Golden.
Of course.
So I was, like, really excited.
So when I first seen it, I didn't watch the whole thing.
So I was like, oh, he's talking about K-pop Demon Hunters.
He was talking about me.
But then I watched it.
They was doing, like, the lip-read thing.
And I had to call Leo.
I'm like, I wasn't asking you.
Like, I knew exactly what K-pop was, because Chase taught me.
So I was like, you can't be talking to me.
Were you talking to me?
Because I already told people you was talking to me.
And he was like, so apparently, he
had two K-pop Demon Hunter conversations that night.
So K-pop Demon Hunters.
K-pop Demon Hunters was just in his mouth all night.
And I'm just like.
She loves it.
And I'm like, who else are you kiki-ing with like that?
Because literally, that's how, like, we kiki.
He be like.
So I had, like, a little friendly jealousy.
I was like, who else are you chewing your invisible gum at?
You know?
He don't even remember who he was talking to.
He was like, I don't even know.
But somebody, yeah, had some questions.
I was like, yeah, it wasn't me, because I
knew exactly who K-pop Demon Hunters was.
Just for the record, for the record.
The other kind of cool moment for you I loved
was you and Julia Roberts.
She cheered you on when you won.
What's that meeting, Julia Roberts?
Oh my god, it was so amazing.
I just remember her part in the sea for me.
She came through like Moses.
She was just like.
She was floating.
It was so scary how perfectly she was floating.
And I told her, I said, don't come a step closer.
Don't come a step closer.
And she started laughing.
I just loved her laugh.
And then I just, like, dived into her arms.
And it was just the cutest moment.
I started crying.
And it was just, it was a lot happening.
We hadn't even walked into the venue yet.
We were like, yeah, we were on a carpet.
But the way she poured into me, she
told me I need a sandwich.
But look, though.
Because I see people trying to get on her about that.
And I was like, hold on.
She told me I needed a sandwich, because she
couldn't find my waist.
You feel me?
She was like, she was in my way.
She was like, girl, I need a sandwich.
It was so cute.
What a year you're having.
And again, thank you.
I'm so happy you're here.
And you got to perform for us later tonight.
Your new album, Escape Room.
You came out of retirement to make it.
Why was now the right time to make this album?
Because it was on my terms.
And I loved it again.
I love to do what I love.
You know?
I can't pour into things that are not pouring into me.
And I was just in a place in my life
before retirement where I felt like that particular thing
just wasn't feeding me.
It wasn't pouring into me.
And I needed to go and water other flowers
and plants in my garden.
I can't just stay stuck on one thing
that's not willing to live.
You know?
So yeah.
And you got nominated for a Grammy?
Yeah, nominated for a Grammy.
Come on, bud.
Yeah.
And you got some amazing actors to record
narrations for this album.
Is everyone pitching to be on the next album?
I got so many dibs for the next album.
I'm going to put some on the Deluxe
and then the next album.
I'm going to make it like an ongoing thing.
Perfect.
We were talking about how great you were yesterday
because we had Ben Affleck and Matt Damon on the show.
And you're in a new movie with them
this Friday on Netflix called The Rip.
Yes.
Man, again, another amazing performance from you.
Thank you.
What's it like working with those guys?
They're fun, right?
Oh my god.
So much fun.
And honestly, you guys, I just got to let
you know ahead of time.
We went to the premiere yesterday.
We all got potty mouths.
When I tell you every other word,
he's just hurtin' up a storm.
So I just wanted to give y'all a full warning.
I know, because it's like, coming right after Pathidia,
y'all going to think that it's me with the potty mouth.
But it's not me with the potty mouth.
No, Taylor's just an actor.
You're acting, doing the thing.
I got a little bit of Samuel L. Jackson in me.
Yeah, I do like to curse, just a little bit.
A little bit.
But not a lot of it.
But how about your action skills, though?
I mean, both in one battle and The Rip.
I mean, you fought Matt Damon.
Ben, I had to pull him up off of his brother in the scene.
And when Joe yelled, cut, Ben was like, what the eff?
You're so effing strong.
You fought Ben Affleck.
They was in it for real.
And you know, Ben is up there.
Dude, Ben, man.
I had to like, wing him on.
Ben Affleck is not a small dude.
He's jacked.
And I had to wing him off of somebody twice.
I didn't want to beat everybody up.
But you did it, though.
You did it.
I did.
Yeah.
It's a great movie.
There's twists and turns.
You don't really know what is happening, and who's corrupt,
and what's going down.
How do we kind of set up The Rip, and what that's about?
Honestly, you explained it well.
Because it's just this rip, and you don't really
know who the good guys are.
And honestly, it would be hard to explain it without even
like, giving it away.
Because it gets so good.
Yes, it was my first time seeing it.
I like being like, surprised sometimes.
So I was looking at it like, ooh, ooh, he did it.
He did it.
At one point, I was like, was it me?
It was so unpredictable.
Because you don't see it until it's all put together.
It's well done.
Yes.
I want to show a clip here of Sienna Taylor in The Rip.
Take a look at this.
You think the cartel will throw me a little loan, Numa?
You know, cover my nut?
It don't hurt to ask, you know?
I heard they're pretty cool about loaning money to cops.
I take home 80K a year after taxes.
And for that, I get shot at, spit on, punched, kicked,
insulted.
I mean, honestly, you feel like you put a little bit of
thought into them thoughts, Lola.
What would you do with this, Numa?
Everything.
