Hello, I am Jared, and welcome to Fun Science Demos. The big idea today is that some really
interesting things happen when we mix matter and motion. Through science we have discovered
that when matter is moving, when it is in motion, it wants to stay moving. You might
have noticed this in a car. You are driving down the road and the light turns red. Your
parents put on the brakes. The car wants to stop, but you want to keep moving. You come
forward. That is why you have a seat belt. The car stops. You want to keep moving. Or
on the bicycle. You are riding down a steep hill. You put on the brakes, and you want
to keep moving forward. Something, matter in motion, wants to stay moving. And the opposite
is true. When matter is not moving, it wants to stay like that. When something is at rest,
it does not want to move. And we have a neat little demonstration to show you that in action.
I have pretty simple materials. I have a wooden hoop, a glass, and a coin, and now I need
to balance them. So I am going to balance the wooden hoop on the glass, and balance
the coin on top of the hoop. It is pretty much in line. Now I have a question for you.
I am going to yank this wooden hoop off the glass, and I want to know what is going to
happen to the coin. Is the coin going to go flying off with the hoop, or is the coin going
to want to stay still? Let us check it out. Here we go. One, two, three. What just happened?
I yanked the hoop out, but the coin dropped into my glass. It dropped straight down. Science
in action. That coin was at rest, and it wanted to stay at rest. That hoop was in motion,
and the coin wanted to stay at rest, and it dropped right down into the glass. Scientists
have a name for this. That property of matter is called inertia. Science is so cool. Do
not forget to check out our links in our video description. Thanks for watching.
