10 Powerful Military Vehicles That Civilians Can Own
10. Teradyne Gurkha
The Teradyne Gurkha is a tactical armored vehicle built by Teradyne Armored Vehicles, Inc.
It comes in three variants, all based on a Ford F-500 Super Duty chassis,
sharing its engine and interior. The Light Armored Patrol Vehicle, LAPV,
Multi-Purpose Patrol Vehicle, MPV, Rapid Patrol Vehicle, RPV, and Civilian Limited
Edition Vehicle, CLEV, are designed for diverse applications, from border patrol
and law enforcement to executive protection and off-road driving.
Did you know Nepali soldiers who served in the British Army are referred to as
Gurkhas, and this vehicle is named to pay homage to them?
The military vehicle can accommodate eight soldiers as well as the two-man crew in the
crew cab. The Gurkha debuted in the 2011 film Fast Five and the TV series SWAT as Black Betty.
Inside the Teradyne LAPV armored vehicle is a luxurious custom interior sporting black
and red leather, with diamond-quilted detailing and contrast stitching.
The Custom Center console houses a bounty of custom and relocated backlit switches.
From the rugged looks of this unique Super Duty's armored body, B4-level rating, to the
roof-mounted escape hatch, a brand-new Teradyne Gurkha is for sale to civilians for roughly $700,000.
One of the most exciting features is the off-road package that is more ballistic with upgrades,
including Fox shocks, a Warn winch, a front differential lock, and an on-board air compressor.
It has an internal beadlock 20-inch wheel mounted on meaty 335-80R20 Michelins.
9. Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6
Mercedes-Benz G63 was once the largest and second-most expensive street-legal vehicle
in the company's lineup. The Mercedes-Benz G63 blends military engineering with luxury.
Inspired by the G-Wagon and designed for the Australian military, it boasts an advanced
transmission for both on- and off-road driving. It combines the engine from the G63, a twin-turbo
V8, with 6x6 portal axles, and a luxury interior with production exceeding 100 vehicles.
The G63 AMG 6x6 features six-wheel drive, running on 5.5-liter, 536 horsepower,
561-pound-foot twin-turbo DOHC, 32-valve V8 AMG engine, and has five electronic differential
locks delivering 100% lock-up of all six wheels. Operated by three switches on the dashboard,
this heavy-duty vehicle can sprint 0-60 mph, 97 kmph, in 7.8 seconds with a top speed limited
to 100 mph, 161 kmph. Mansory is offering several carbon fiber options, along with several types of
leather, alcantara, and wood trims, for the interior of your choice. While military versions
aren't available, civilian street-legal G63s are worth $982,017. For those who can afford it,
it's one of the most stylish military-inspired vehicles on the market.
Paramount Marauder, also known as the world's most unstoppable vehicle, is one of the most
powerful military vehicles, with a rugged and robust profile that demonstrates outstanding
cross-country agility and impressive speed on all types of terrain. It was developed by
Paramount Group in South Africa and launched during the 2007 International Defense Exhibition,
IDEX, and Conference in Abu Dhabi. Paramount Marauder isn't an ordinary armored vehicle.
Instead offers mine protection up to 8 kg TNT anywhere under the hull and 14 kg TNT for a blast
under any wheel. One of the coolest features includes special anti-blast seats to protect
occupants from side or mine blasts, the double-skinned armor shields against kinetic attacks,
with optional armor for specific threats. With a 4,500 kg payload capacity, the vehicle offers
exceptional flexibility for weapons, machine guns, and mission-specific gear. What's more
interesting is it weighs over 27,000 pounds, light enough for transport from a C-130 cargo
plane or Chinook transport helicopter. The Paramount Marauder accommodates two crew members
and eight fully-equipped soldiers, reaching an impressive 68 mph and a top speed of 100 to 120
kmph. Available in both standard and stretched versions in either 4x4 or a 6x6 vehicle
configuration and armor options, it's the ultimate wheeled combat vehicle. This African
beast is road-legal and worth $500,000, enough to make Hummer owners jealous.
7. Humvee. The high-mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle that is Humvee is a lightweight
four-wheel military truck and utility vehicle produced by AM General, primarily for the U.S.
military. The Humvee seats four people with an available fully-enclosed aluminum cabin
with a vertical windshield. It has all-wheel drive with independent suspension and double
wishbone suspension with portal gear hubs on all four wheels and inboard disc brakes.
Interestingly, the newer HMMWV versions can be equipped with a central tire inflation system
kit in the field, and while it is optimized for off-road mobility, it can achieve 55 mph,
89 kmph at maximum weight with a top speed of 70 mph. HMMWVs are well-suited for airmobile
operations as they are transportable by C-130 or larger combat transports. Incredibly modular,
these HMMWV has 17 different variations from troop carriers to ambulances to weapons platforms,
and the good news is they can all be purchased by the public with relative ease. The HMMWV
is capable of fording 2.5 feet, 76 centimeters normally, or 5 feet, 1.5 meter with the deep
water fording kits installed. The Humvee series can be seen in the M-115111 and later up-armored
A-1 versions. It has a stronger suspension and a larger 6.5-liter turbo-diesel engine
to accommodate the weight of up to 680 kilograms, 1,500 pounds, of additional armor.
Key upgrades feature quick-release VEE windows for emergencies and a blast chimney that directs
bomb blasts away from occupants. Prices vary depending on the variant, condition, and year,
but some of these classic military vehicles were sold for as little as $4,000.
6. Sherman Tank. Classics don't get any more classic than the Sherman,
as it will set you back by a whopping $550,000. And why shouldn't it? After all, it is an arsenal
that has witnessed the historic World War. The U.S. produced several units as the production cost
was cheap. The War Department approved the development of a new tank, resulting in the M-3,
which had a 75-mm main armament gun mounted on the right front side of the hull. The gun was
limited to a 30-degree traverse, which severely limited its ability to quickly engage multiple
targets on the battlefield. The M-4 Sherman, evolving from the M-3, began production in
February 1942. Prioritizing speed and mobility over armor, it featured a 75-mm low-velocity gun
and three machine guns. Its sloped frontal armor ranged from 58 mm to 108 mm. Weighing 30 to 33
tons, it reached speeds of 38 to 46 km per hour, with a range of 160 to 240 km. Driven by 400 to
500 horsepower gasoline or diesel engines, it had a five-man crew, commander, gunner, loader,
radio operator, driver, and co-driver, hull gunner. You can buy a used Sherman for about $60,000,
which is not exactly cheap, but it's a great investment if you're tired of that neighbor
always showing off their new sports car. 5. B.M.Y. M923A2. 5-ton, 6x6. The M939 is a 5-ton,
6x6 U.S. military heavy truck designed for heavy hauling and off-road adventures. Built in 1990,
this truck has only been driven for 22,078 miles and has been used for a total of 648 hours.
This behemoth 10,000-pound cargo truck is powered by a Cummins 8.3-liter diesel turbo engine,
has a 14-foot cargo bed, and weighs out over 30,000 pounds gross. It is a verified boss.
The truck with its six-wheel drive capability can perform flawlessly and navigate through
challenging terrains without any issues. The B.M.Y. M923A2 military 6x6 cargo truck comes
packed with upgrades for peak performance with features such as LED headlamps for improved
visibility, a spare tire for emergencies, and full air brakes for enhanced control.
All gauges and lights are in perfect working condition, and the well-maintained paint gives
the truck a sleek, polished look. Whether you need to haul heavy loads or venture off-road,
this truck is up for the task. But beyond the military spectrum, it's a great truck for several
commercial and private projects. The good news? It's available for sale to civilians for roughly
$22,000. Yep, that's it. Go get one. 4. Oshkosh LATV. And you thought military
vehicles couldn't get manlier than the original Humvee. You are mistaken. The Oshkosh LATV,
developed for the JLTV program, aims to replace part of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps Humvee
offering superior protection and performance. The name stands for Light Combat All-Terrain Vehicle.
The protection system can withstand underbelly blasts. The LATV can accept add-on armor packages
to operate according to the mission requirements. Oshkosh's LATV engine and mobility, the LATV
developed by Oshkosh, is equipped with a diesel engine delivering power to a high-output electric
generator. The LATV is equipped with a TAC-4, high-intelligent independent suspension system,
offering high levels of mobility and maneuverability to the vehicle. Also, the suspension
is not ordinary. Its coil sprung and offers 20 inches of travel, which is 25% more than any
vehicle currently used by the U.S. military. The system can be raised and lowered using internal
controls. Each Oshkosh LATV variant serves a different purpose, such as the Heavy Guns Carrier
HGC variant can accommodate crew-served and remote weapon systems. Equipped with a protected gun
mount, the vehicle provides overwatch and direct fire support during infantry maneuvers and convoy
escort missions. Furthermore, the HGC can be equipped with lasers and other non-kinetic weapons
to counter the risk of drone swarms. The JLTV utility vehicle is used to carry cargo or shelters,
while the Close Combat Weapons Carrier CCWC variant is designed to carry a variety of weapons
to support different missions. Want to buy one? While this is fully intended as a military vehicle,
the unarmored version is available for civilian sale with prices starting at $250,000.
3. SuperCat All-Terrain Mobility Platform MK4
This fourth-generation SuperCat is capable of carrying 1.6 tons of machine guns, golf clubs,
or beer, practically anywhere on Earth. It's a lightweight six-wheeled vehicle used by airborne
and airmobile forces of the British Army since 1988. It's fully amphibious and uses its six-driven
wheels as a kind of paddlewheel drive when storming beaches. Capable of 40-plus miles per
hour, the ATMP can even be registered to drive on public roads. It features permanent six-wheel
drive, 6x6, with conventional steering controlled by rotating handlebars. These handlebars also
operate independent steering brakes on each side for precise maneuverability. SuperCat is one of
the most versatile military vehicles capable of various roles, including handling pallets up to
1.6 tons with the Forklift Pallet Trailer, FLPT, carrying and pumping 1,000 liters of aviation
fuel as the Fuel Cat, and providing aircraft crash recovery and casualty evacuation. The ATMP
can achieve speeds exceeding 40 miles per hour and is suitable for registration to drive on public
roads. Now you can buy a new SuperCat for around $60,000, but used models in good condition go for
as little as $10,000. 2. Inca's Huron APC. The Inca's Huron APC is a robust armored vehicle
designed for military and post-apocalyptic survival, featuring ballistic protection
against 7.62x51 SC and M-80 NATO ball ammunition. It includes a blast-protected floor, optional
roof-mounted gun turret, noise insulation, rugged off-road capability, and an 8.3-liter
pocker engine with a 10-speed manual Allison transmission. Just looking at this thing will
make your jaw drop by its sheer length. Though they're primarily used by police and special
forces, Inca's offers customers a chance to customize and then order their own personal one.
However, that doesn't change the fact that this armored vehicle costs $500,000 to $1,000,000 each,
so you'll need to be Bill Gates to get one. But it's a gorgeous edgy silhouette super-duty vehicle.
1. Chieftain MK-10. Chieftain tanks are the most powerful and coolest military vehicles in the
world. British military surplus retailer Tank Limo offers an assortment of Chieftain tanks,
including this beautiful MK-10 from the early 1970s. The Chieftain line remains in combat use
today, and fully functional models with working main guns go for around $80,000.
It boasts a powerful 750-horsepower Leyland L60 engine, reaching speeds up to 30 miles per hour.
Its formidable armor, up to 120 millimeters thick and including composite layers, provides robust
protection against anti-tank weapons. Inside, it offers advanced fire control systems and a
crew compartment for operational comfort. A runner in need of restoration can go for around $50,000,
and DIY tanks in need of complete restoration can be bought for as little as $20,000. Not a bad deal,
minus the extra $10,000 or so you'll pay to have a humongous tank shipped from England.
