Hello and welcome to Mike McKinley's Tips, Tips and Things. So today we are going for another afternoon tea.
This time we are going to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory afternoon tea and we are gonna be over here when this bus goes off.
One Aldwych, that's exactly where we're going. Of course it would be a case of all the buses just popping apart. There it is.
I can zoom in quite quickly, let's zoom in quickly. There you go, it's One Aldwych and that's where we're off to.
So it's 2.30, we haven't eaten all day so we're really hungry. So we're gonna go across the road.
But before we do, please like, share and subscribe to this video, it helps us make more videos.
And also as well, don't forget to catch us on our live chat every Tuesday and every Friday 6pm UK time.
You can ask us anything you like, including the afternoon tea you're gonna see us have today.
Anyway, we're hungry, let's go.
So I'm just gonna take you through the afternoon tea, as you can see there.
You've got the savouries there, which is the Coronation Chicken Sarnie sandwich.
Salmon and Dill Quiche with Saffron Mayo, the Egg Mayonnaise and Watercress Sarnie.
The Spinach Roly-Poly and the not quite as it seems Beetroot Macaron.
You've got the Scrumptious Sweets there.
I won't go through all of them as well, but I'm really looking forward to that very messy eaten mess.
And the afternoon teas there, you've got at £58 per person, but you can upgrade to a Cocktail Afternoon Tea for £72.
The Champagne, various ones at £72 and £76, all going up to £78.
For the teas, you've got the Chocolate Noir, the Caramel Noir, the Lemon Verbena or the Berries and Hibiscus.
They've also got Lychee and Rose, which I know Kelly will probably go for.
You can also do an extra glass of Champagne or one of the cocktails here of your choice.
So that's your choice here at Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Okay, so this is the Caramel Noir tea.
And he said it's just to be enjoyed because they're infused teas, so it's meant to be enjoyed just like this.
But I said, you know what, I think I am going to need milk and sugar.
So he's dropped off some sugar and he's gone to get some milk, but let's try it as is.
You can tell the caramel, but I know that I will need milk with this.
So mine is the Lychee and Rose. Now when these came, you can really smell that.
I can smell Kelly's caramel and this rose. It smells wonderful.
Black tea, but let's try it.
Do you know what, that's refreshing. It's almost like a squash cordial.
It's not really strong, but it's got a beautiful, beautiful taste.
I love the rose as well. It's very floral, very fruity.
That's delicious. This is going to be great with cakes and sandwiches.
I don't tend to put sugar in mine because we have the cakes, which sweetens it.
So really looking forward to that.
So Kelly's now added the milk and sugar.
So she's going to try a little more of a sweetened version of the Caramel Noir.
Yeah, that's better for me.
Good. Does it taste of caramel?
Yeah, it tasted of caramel before that anyway.
And it tasted of caramel when I added the sugar.
And it tastes of caramel now that I've added the milk.
But because it was quite light in the first place, I think I need it to infuse a bit more.
So once it's infused a bit more, then yeah, it will really bring out the flavour.
Okay, so I'm going to go for it now. I'm going to go for the egg one first.
It's looking really juicy, really moist as you can see there.
Okay, here we go.
The bread is really soft.
I can taste the pepper there as well.
You can just about see there's chives in there.
Yeah, you can open it.
You can see there's chives in there as well.
Very, very fresh.
Beautiful sandwich.
I know you sort of said this is a bog standard when you were getting it at Afternoon Tea, but it is very pleasant.
I've ordered two.
Okay, this one I'm really looking forward to trying.
This is the Spinach Rolly Curry.
It's got the caramelised jam on the top.
It's all good. No, that's okay. It's good.
Here's the caramelised jam on the top.
We've got the Spinach Rolly Polly.
Let's give it a try.
These onions on that really add to it.
You've got that note of sweetness in there.
As you can see, you've kind of got the spinach.
It's got that wonderful creamy, very, very silky.
It's hummus. That's the cream. It's hummus.
That's fantastic. That's really, really good.
I know I'm jamming all the sandwiches so you guys can see.
Right, now this is the interesting one.
This one is the Coronation Cauliflower.
Now, Kelly's got chicken. I've got Coronation Cauliflower.
So this is the pescatarian version.
Let's give this a go.
Nice, neat little square sandwich.
That is amazing.
Lovely, subtle curry flavour to it.
Really juicy. The raisins in there.
Or sultanas, I think.
I think we can just about make out that's a sultana right there.
It's really juicy. Absolutely. That is delicious.
That's my favourite one so far.
Right, now this was the Salmon. Is that right?
Yeah, Salmon.
Look at that. It's almost like a little loaf cake.
Well, it's almost like a little tart.
Let me try this one. Here we go.
That is delicious.
You can see there's a little salmon piece in there.
That's going to zoom in.
You know what it's like? It's almost like having a salmon omelette.
It's absolutely fantastic. It's almost like a little quiche.
Oh my gosh, they're getting better and better.
Right, last but not least.
This is the beetroot macaron.
And this is one that's really nice as well.
Okay, here we go.
I've never had a savoury macaron before, certainly.
That's amazing.
It's so nice.
It's got an element of sweetness into it.
It doesn't really taste much to me.
It's a very, very, very subtle beetroot taste.
But it's so sweet and undertones under that as well.
That's really good. And do you know what?
The order I ate them in is the best order to eat them in, I think.
I just got lucky there because it starts off and it gets sweeter as it goes on.
So it's almost like having a savoury and sweet thing.
That's really good.
I've been very impressed with these sandwiches so far.
I'm going to let Kelly try them now.
Okay, here we go.
So this is the egg.
And what I'm going to do, I'm going to open it up a little bit.
So you can see the inside.
Let's just try it.
I really like the flavour of it.
I don't know if it's the best egg sandwich that I've had.
Do you know what? I've got to say, it's one of the best I've had.
I'm trying to compare it with maybe Portnum's.
Because Portnum's is our favourite, isn't it?
It's very good.
Now, the onion jam really intrigues me in this.
Do you know what? I'm really looking forward to you trying this.
Try and get a bite of the onion jam when you take the bite.
And I've got a little bit here, so I'm going to try it with a little bit and see.
Let's try it.
It is good.
You know what? It's similar to what I've tasted before in any afternoon tea.
Yeah, I've got to say, I've never had a combo of hummus and spinach before.
But I thought that worked really well.
Onion jam. So good.
Onion jam, onion marmalade. It's really good.
Yeah, I found it as a real sweetener.
The fact that you've eaten a lot just shows how good it is.
Now, this is where our sandwiches differ.
This is the only different one because you've got coronation chicken.
Mine was cauliflower, coronation chicken.
How did you find your cauliflower?
Really good.
I love the little decoration on that.
It is cute, isn't it? And it's a perfect square.
Now, you've got some good chunks of chicken in there.
So, I just want to show what it looks like.
So, let's do this.
Dry, really delicious.
And Mark's right.
It just gets better as you go along.
So good.
I'm interested in trying these last two.
So, this one is meant to be like a salmon tart nut.
But it's delicate. I can feel that it's soft, it's quiet.
And it's warm as well.
It's a little bit squidgy.
So, let's give it a go.
It's fantastic, isn't it?
It's like a little salmon quiche but it reminds me of a salmon omelette.
I love my omelettes. What do you think?
It's true. I'm not a lover of fish.
The pastry is sweet.
It's got that little bit of egg and then the salmon is smoked.
And I'm not really a lover of fish.
It's not that I'm not a lover of smoked.
Sometimes smoked stuff doesn't agree with me.
But you can really taste the flavour in there. It's really good.
This is like a butter of some sort, I believe.
Because it's not mustard, but it looks like mustard.
That is good.
Last but not least.
It almost felt like a giant sea urchin.
This one was a really nice surprise for me.
Let's dig in.
Beetroot cream cheese.
It's beautiful, isn't it?
It's like sweet but not sweet at the same time. It's really good.
What do you think of the order that I said?
I think we ate them in the right order.
I'm not sure whether I would swap around the tart and the...
I don't know.
Mainly it's difficult.
It's really good though. Really good.
Okay, so we actually get an extra refill.
And this is mine. This is how it looks.
So there's Kelly. She has gone for the second refill, which is right there.
And they've done me a little refill too.
So just to let you know, here you do get...
At least one refill.
We will see if we can get more.
But for now, we're going to chow down in these.
I'm so full.
Okay.
Okay, so here we go.
I'm just going to spread the jam.
This is the snozzberry jam.
It's still warm.
It's crazy.
It's so soft.
And warm.
It's good.
Really?
I'm not sure it's the best one I've had.
What jam do you think it is? I know it's snozzberry.
But what does it taste a bit like?
Strawberry jam.
Ah, okay.
It looks like strawberry jam.
It's good.
And I was so eager. I've put jam on the other one as well.
I'm going to start with the cream cheese one to see what this one tastes like.
And Kelly's right. These are so light and fluffy. They're really warm.
Let's try it.
Oh wow.
That's really, really good.
It's like a combination of cream cheese but also with a very, quite sharp lemon.
But the two combine each other so well.
Lemon? I hope it's pineapple.
Pineapple.
I don't know why I say that because it's got very strong citrus taste.
But you can really taste the pineapple.
What's that pineapple drink you like?
It's not the one we had at Disneyland.
Oh, pineapple dole whip.
It tastes like a pineapple dole whip.
It's that good.
That's fantastic.
Okay.
The smell's great.
Wow, these ones are so good.
Really good.
I can't get over how light these are.
Totally different from the other ones I've had.
Some of them are harder.
But these are really, really good.
Excellent.
I'm just going to show the cream cheese and the pineapple.
So let's give it a go.
Hmm.
Oh, I really like that.
Yeah.
I had high hopes for it.
No, I really did enjoy that.
It is, there is a real tang to the pineapple.
I like that.
I thought you would like that, you know, but.
All right, stick to the snowsbury jam.
Mmm, good.
So, although it was my birthday last week,
they asked what we were celebrating.
I told them it was my birthday last week.
I didn't say today.
But they so kindly gave me a happy birthday cake.
That was so nice of them.
So thank you so much, One Aldridge, for doing this.
Really, really do appreciate it.
Now here's something I only just spotted.
If you look at the upside of the cup,
it's actually got the One Aldridge
name on there.
Exclusively for them.
I did thought it was quite unique, their cutlery there.
The little pattern.
So I did think that was a nice little touch.
And look at this.
The cakes have arrived.
They look fantastic.
They're served on this little box.
You've got these, it looks like the grass inside there.
Or is it moss?
It looks absolutely amazing.
So we've got,
Kelly and I have got very similar ones.
But this is the pescatarian.
So this is the Willy Wonka chocolate bar with the gold leaf.
Now the pescatarian one
is gelatine free.
Kelly's will have gelatine in.
We have got the lemon,
I think it's the...
No, it's the violet.
No, no, that's the blueberry.
This one is the lemon.
I'm pretty sure it's the lemon in there.
This is the drink
from the chocolate waterfall.
This is Augustus Gloop.
This one is the blueberry,
which has got the blueberry tart here.
And this one is the Eton Mess.
But of course, there's the big candy floss.
So you've got the theatre of that right there.
You've got to guess
what the flavour is.
Yeah, as Kelly said, we've got to guess what the flavour is.
So I'm really looking forward to trying this.
Also, they did say
there's a little draw here.
Now let's have a look.
Oh, shall we do it at the end?
Oh, we'll do it at the end. We won't do it.
We'll wait for the gift, but there's a draw there.
So just bear in mind, when you have the tea, there's a draw here.
I can't wait for this. It's amazing.
But I don't want to miss you, baby
So I stand up and speak
It's my mind
Oh
Okay, so here we go.
I am going to start
off with, I don't know
whether to start this way or the other way.
So I think
maybe the other way.
So this one is different to Mark's one.
So this has
gelatine in it. So this is the main
difference you get in your afternoon
tea if you're going for pescetarian or vegetarian.
This one has gelatine in it.
And this is the Willy Wonka bar?
Yeah, that's right, with the gold leaf on the top
as you can see.
There's the gold leaf.
There we go.
So
let's try it.
Good?
So creamy.
And the base
has got little bits of
just like a lime
in their base.
Really, really good.
I'm enjoying that.
That's so good.
Oh
Okay, the next one
is this one. I don't even know
what this is.
But it is purple
like Violet Beauregard.
So. I'm pretty sure
this is the one with the lemon. I'm pretty sure I've surfaced it
with lemon. I didn't hear the lemon
part so we'll find out in a second.
We shall find out.
But it is, yeah.
Here we go.
It's very light. It is lemon.
Yeah.
But it's very light.
It's hardly
it's only an inch.
So it's not like a tangy or anything like that.
It's really
lightly flavoured.
Oh you can see the lemon there.
It's like a custard.
Not as good as the
first one though.
So this
is the next one.
Now this one is
the blueberry. Okay.
I'm itching to know if that's meringue or cream on the top.
It's meringue.
It's for sure meringue.
They've blow torched it.
This is cherry.
That's blueberry.
Okay.
Blueberry's normally purple.
Alright let's try it.
Blueberry.
Yes because it's by
it makes sense that it's blueberry.
It's good.
But
nothing's topping that
Oh the chocolate one.
The chocolate one.
It's not sour.
It's light and it's fluffy.
So it's good.
But
it's not as good as that first one.
So
let's try the
eaten mess.
So they've got 3-4 layers.
So you've got the 3 layers here but that I would count as the 4th layer.
Yeah that looks
very sort of meringue.
I love love
eaten mess. I really can't wait to try this one.
I feel my spoon
might be a little bit big
for this but
Oh yeah.
That's what I was trying to get
all the way to the bottom.
Oh is that sour?
Oh that's right up
my street. I'm looking forward to that one.
No?
That's not for me.
But I'm going to try the
Worcestershire cream.
Save some room for later.
Here we go.
Wow.
Nice?
It just tastes like chocolate milk.
It's not like anything. Oh my god.
That's wow.
I think it's got caramel in it.
So our server was telling us. So that's going to be interesting.
I can feel something sticking at the bottom.
Maybe I just need to mix it.
It's a normal
chocolate milkshake but
the last thing that I'm going to try
is the
candyfloss. Okay so
here we go.
This is it guys. We've got to guess
what flavour it is. Now we can't
unfortunately do it at the same time because
we have a small table. So Kelly's going to go
first and see if she can guess.
I love the fact they've done candyfloss.
I think this is a really good touch.
What flavour do you think it is?
Candyfloss.
Now
our waiter did say it
has got a flavour.
Snosbury?
Snosbury? Who's ever heard of a Snosbury?
What do you think? Go on.
Guess the flavour. It's candyfloss.
Alright let me give it a go.
Alright here we go.
I've still got chocolate taste in my mouth so that might
affect. That's my excuse for
trying to guess.
I'm taking this very seriously.
Here we go.
Because it tastes like candyfloss.
I want to say like a strawberry or a raspberry but
yeah Kelly's right.
It's got no, it does taste like candyfloss
but it's got no distinguishing taste to it.
I love it because it's candyfloss
but
oh no
I think it's bubblegum flavour.
Oh okay. I'm guessing bubblegum.
I get a slight taste of bubblegum.
We'll find out in the last couple of weeks.
As we said in this bottom drawer here there is a
surprise. So let's see what it is.
With a grand reveal.
Oh what's this?
Oh it's popcorn.
Tremendous things are
in store for you. Many wonderful surprises
await you from Willy Wonka. Look at that.
Oh it's absolute popcorn.
There you go. Popcorn,
butterscotch essence and caster
sugar. So it's sweet popcorn.
What an amazing surprise.
So we should put a little disclaimer actually when
I do this as well for the grand reveal.
But there you go. That's what's the surprise
in the drawer.
Come with me
and you'll be
in a world
of pure imagination.
And just
before we go, we've just finished
our afternoon tea. There's this
fantastic chocolate
fountain here. Look at this.
Churning the chocolate. That is so
so good.
We've had an absolutely wonderful time here at the afternoon
tea. So we'll do our final thoughts
when we get back home.
So we are back
and we're going to keep our end of
thing review short
just purely because the video has gone over
30 minutes. So what did you think?
I really enjoyed
it. It's one of those ones that
it's been a long time since I've
really enjoyed an afternoon tea. I agree.
I thought it was really really nice.
Okay, let's talk quickly about the sandwiches.
I really liked the
sandwiches. I liked the egg one
but you know I also liked the little
tart. Oh that
salmon tart was delicious. Yeah it was
really good. It reminded me of
a salmon omelette. Oh did it?
I don't know why but it was so nice.
Almost like a salmon quiche. Now I'm not a big fan of quiche.
Yeah, yes, yeah. But
it's, but I love omelette.
That was so good and I loved
it as well. Mine was the actual coronation
cauliflower. You had the coronation chicken.
Yes, yes, yes. I had the coronation cauliflower.
That I found delicious. I found
that really nice. Really
flavourful. A very subtle
slight curry flavour. Yeah. Delicious.
All the savouries. Yeah they were good.
I liked all the savouries.
Yeah, again
it's the second one I think I've loved
all the savouries. I was gonna say
so we did get one refill
just to let you guys know. Yes.
Now they didn't give us a second refill
but they said are you ready for your scones
so they brought them out so we actually went straight for the scones.
Had we asked
I think they probably would have done them.
I think. It's a possibility but it's
hard to know. Yeah. It's hard to know.
They didn't really come out and say do you want
a third helping. Exactly.
They just brought out the scones so just
bear that in mind. If you do want more sandwiches
don't be afraid to ask.
I don't think they would say. They can only say no.
Yeah, they can only say no. Exactly.
What do you think of the scones?
Yes. Do you know what it is?
I don't like to fill up on scones.
In general but I do like scones
and I did like their scones
but in general I don't like to fill up on scones.
But I love their scones. Their scones were
so light and fluffy.
They had the snozberry jam
and they had the pineapple. Now you'll see on the
video, Kelly
didn't try it on the video
because I only had to cut the video down a bit
shorter so you didn't see your reaction. You didn't like
the pineapple thing. I thought
it tasted like pineapple dole whip
but you really didn't like the pineapple topping
on it. You didn't think it was that nice.
Yeah.
Yeah, like it's a
tricky one because I'm always
conscious when I eat scones anyway
because
they do fill me up quite a bit
so I can't
do you know what? I'm going to be honest
I can't even really remember the pineapple
so it can't have been that good because
if it was good I would have remembered it.
You didn't like it. You didn't like it.
I loved it. I thought it was like pineapple dole whip.
I thought it was that good.
Right, going to be
last but not least, what did
you think of the cakes?
I enjoyed the cakes.
What I loved about the cakes
was the theatre of it. Yes.
Bringing out two boxes
with all that on top.
Now as you saw, mine was different to Kelly's
only two bits were different. Yeah.
But that's because
the chocolate cake had gelatine
so mine didn't obviously.
You
didn't like the
Eton Mess because you said it was too tart. Yeah.
But I really enjoyed that.
Yeah but that's not your thing.
Now again because our video was hitting
30 minutes I had to save time so I
didn't show my reactions but I
really really did enjoy
that Eton Mess.
I thought it was very tart
a very strong
tart bitter flavour. Not bitter
but you know that. Yeah I mean
I loved the candy floss
and stuff like that but I've got to say
I think, I did enjoy the sweets
but I think I enjoyed the
savouries more. Really? Yeah I think
so. The chocolate milkshake
you enjoyed that. I did enjoy
I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the sweets. Yeah.
What I'm saying is I enjoyed the
savouries more than the sweets.
Now I thought that they were some of the
best cakes we've had. I preferred
the cakes there to the Shard's one. Yeah.
So to the Peter Pan ones purely because there was more
choice. Yes. Now Peter
Pan you got three. This one I think
off the top of my head I think it was about five or six.
Yeah we had different ones because there was even candy
floss and then there was the cake
and then there was the milkshake
and then wasn't there the round ball as
well. And
that was the surprise. That was the surprise
I thought it was fantastic they did
popcorn in with the surprise
I thought that was a really nice
touch. Yeah. Because he did say to us there is it
so it's butterscotch flavour for anyone who doesn't know.
It says on here it contains popcorn, butterscotch
butterscotch essence
and caster sugar.
So it's butterscotch flavour you have
there. We forgot to ask
the waiter for the flavour
of the candy floss because we had to guess
that. And I couldn't
tell what it was. I thought it
was bubblegum flavour.
I just thought it was candy floss. Candy
floss doesn't even have a flavour. So where
would you rank this
in our afternoon teas?
So we've
done the Shard
we've done Shard. We did the
Park Lane one. Park Lane. Sorry
Knightsbridge one. Knightsbridge one.
This one. Did we. Is
We've done Sanderson's. We've done a few.
No in this series. Oh in this
series we haven't done Sanderson's. We did Sanderson's a long long
time ago. Yes. So they're all going to
be. This is going to be an afternoon tea
series for this year. Oh and Beauty and the Beast.
Beauty and the Beast. Right. So
I
think the Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory ranks number one at the moment
in this series.
In this series.
There you are. At the moment.
Now we are going to have more
afternoon teas coming up
in this series because
I'm just trying to think. So
obviously we've done previous ones
and
but we haven't
done my favourite one.
This series.
Well that would be to come. Yeah.
Question I've got to ask you.
So this is ranked number one so far
by Kelly. Yes.
Would you go again? Oh yes. Of course.
I would go again. We would thoroughly
recommend this afternoon tea. It's
really nice. The theatre's great.
The actual
actions there. The food. The sandwiches
as Kelly said are delicious. What's your number one?
That's a difficult one.
Of this season. Of this season.
Probably this one is up there. Right.
So I would say these are really
is a really good afternoon tea.
The savouries I agree are one of the
best we've had and I've got
to say that. The savouries are absolutely fantastic.
Yeah. The theatre of the boxes
was great. I was going to say and the scones
were delicious. Overall a fantastic
afternoon tea. We didn't even mention you had the
hot chocolate. Oh yeah.
Which was again you really liked
as well. Yeah. Yeah. You'll see
that actually as I rotate it round there as well.
We only just showed a little bit of it. We didn't see
Kelly eating it as well. Yeah. The teas were
really good as well.
The whole afternoon tea. Okay you don't get the
views of the show like you do but the whole
theatre of it was absolutely fantastic. Yeah.
I really liked it.
There you have it folks. So a huge
recommendation from both Kelly and I.
