It's winter in Berlin And it's
extremely cold And this is precisely
the moment when we want to find out
how Berliners cope with the winter
Exactly Once again we're hitting
the streets to ask people in Berlin
and across Germany how
they're feeling about the winter Let's go
How do you feel in winter in Berlin
Cold Also cold
And how’s your mood in winter
Not as lively as in summer I'd
say I love winter What do you think
of winter in Berlin
Totally awesome
Really Well what's your take now
Well finally it's snowing
You can look
outside while sitting in the Warne And it's fantastic
Especially now in winter
I find it very depressing and
cold even when the sky is gray all the time
Where's your hat and your ears
Well I left them at home today
because I have a ponytail in it
And that's why I didn't want to put on a hat
Well if it's snowing like this right now
we're feeling good aren't we Matchen
We’ve even got snowflakes in our hair
Cool that looks great yes
How do you feel about winter in Berlin
Actually if it's like this now quite nice
Pretty good actually because finally some snow
Slippery things aren't really my
thing right now but otherwise it's
actually nice—just like how I feel in
summer Really Yes No difference at all
Well sure it's a bit
cold but other than
that it's no different So I don't care
Winter in Berlin can be very gray
But not today
Not today which is why I’m out for a walk
But I haven't been out much this week Now with the
snow I feel wonderful But
I think I'm in the minority
I'm originally from St Petersburg and for me 60
centimeters of snow in a day is perfectly normal
Well first of all it's cold but you know there's
no such thing as bad weather
—just the wrong clothes
I'm wearing ski pants and a thick jacket
You really need to be properly equipped for this
You look nicely bundled up
Yes exactly
How do you feel about winter in Berlin
I feel really cold and a bit lonelier than usual
because you don’t see as many people around
I don't feel well It's very cold
here and I'm not from Germany
Cold weather isn't usual for me
Where in America are you from
I'm from Arizona
Extremely hot This year we've
also had good weather in winter
But I understand anyone who's prone to winter depression
The sun isn't quite as
present as it usually is
I feel good but many don't
What do you like most
about winter in Berlin And what can you absolutely not stand
I love snow the most when it's falling
I absolutely enjoy walking through the park when it's snowing
Not at all especially
when it's not snowing and the wind
is howling Exactly And when
it's overcast Windy and gray
What do you like most about winter and what do you absolutely dislike
I find it terrible
In some years Berlin is just gray all the time
Only high fog We've
already had cold days this
winter but also sunshine That keeps spirits up
But when it's gray for months on end it weighs on your mood
It's lovely to meet up with the children while playing together
And then for example just like now it might also be possible
tomorrow to go sledding and spend a little time in the snow
That's also something beautiful I love being
able to take a walk outside And then
clear air snow and sunshine
That's truly so
lovely Building
snowmen Definitely building
snowmen Eating oranges eating
mandarins Stuff like that
What I don't like is how quickly it gets dark That makes the day
always feel so short as if there's not enough time to do anything
What do you like best and most about Berlin in winter
In winter
Playing more games at home with friends
Board gamers
That tends to happen more at home during winter
I don't particularly like winter
I'm more likely to stay at home
And when I do go out I'd rather go sledding with friends
I really enjoy sledding
Have you sledded this winter yet
Did you see how the children come rushing down
Yeah how they jumped over the curb like that
That looked intense What
I love most about winter
Grabbing the dog to go for a
walk through the snow I also
try to keep my time in Berlin to a minimum during winter
I try to spend as much time as
possible out in the countryside back home with my
family What about you—where is your
hometown The Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony
I can highly recommend that to anyone What I love about Berlin
in winter is when it's really cold—maybe
even a bit colder than it is today
And then blue sky
I really enjoy taking a long walk like that
Maybe out on the city's edge around the lake or something like that
When it's fully frozen over
and you can watch people skating
I really like that
But there are also days in Berlin when everything feels very gray
You head back home from the office in the evenings
And it might even be icy
Or it's around 0°C and the
snow is melting You end up getting everything on your pants
But then you're glad to be home soon
Yes it's true—you're glad to be home soon
I always spend a lot of time at home during the winter
And that’s the perfect opportunity to work on your goals
What can you do at home
Naturally learn German And if you want to make real
progress in the new year I
recommend trying a private tutor
or work with a private tutor through
our partner italki There you 'll
find a wide variety of options
Many people teach German there
And recently Janusz took a trial lesson with Lisa who also
works in the Easy German team and teaches German on italki
If I'm standing somewhere and want
someone to come to me I say
"Come here "
But if I move to another place then I go there
I also have a short text here where we can practice together
Kari is having a party tomorrow Would you like to come over
here beforehand and pick me up
Then we could drive there together

Does winter affect your mood
Definitely yes
In winter I'm inevitably much more tired throughout the entire day
And also more exhausted
In contrast in the summer I'm much happier from within
Does winter affect your mood
Currently positive yes
The city is quieter and snow naturally muffles
everything What's annoying is the slush and the salt
Salt is really spread on the roads and sidewalks
Yes in summer one naturally goes out a lot
In winter I'm also happy to stay home sometimes
and make me a tea or something nice
especially when it gets that cold
But actually no when the weather's nice
Also a few days ago
we had lightning
a blue sky and it was cold—perfect weather really
We bundle up warmly outside
and take nice walks everyone
in good spirits So if it's sunny with a bit of snow
The mood is just as good as in summer
But if it's raining heavily and cold and gray right now
And dreary
Yeah then you just huddle in
And then you just have to push through
So if it gets dark this early
I feel like you're already more tired
And it's also harder to get up in the morning
Yes I can agree with that
That's definitely how I feel too
How does winter in Berlin affect your mood
Well quite a bit actually
You're sensitive to the
weather too Yes I'm a bit weather-sensitive
But what helps is spending time with friends
The idea of trying not to be alone so much
The desire to connect with other people
One could always go to the sauna
The mood was great there too
Exactly I spent New Year's Eve there in fact
It was wonderful
You always find something to do
I sing
in a choir That also lifts my
mood It always pulls me out of
my slump And I have to go to work every day unless I'm on vacation
Then you don’t have time to feel down at
all Exactly
Does the weather and winter affect your mood
Yes of course
But with me the colder it gets the better
Really Yes
Minus 35 how about you
Minus 35 is awesome
I've never experienced minus 40 before
That might be the limit But at minus 35 if
it's not humid it's
actually quite pleasant
A little down a bit weighed down
simply because you can't get out as much
And because I miss the sunlight so much
I heard somewhere
at by the end of winter all Germans
or all Berliners have too little
vitamin D I take vitamin D supplements
I hope that doesn't happen to me
Do you ever feel like leaving Berlin
in winter And if so where would you go
Not permanently
It's always nice to come back into warmth That warmth
could be the heated living
room or even a short getaway
That said you really have to fly quite far in winter
Even Southern Europe isn't far enough
So we tend to stay here during the winter
We aren't skiers either A month ago we
left Berlin We were in Thailand
which was lovely too
But I wouldn't skip the entire winter
Exactly not that
But missing a month like that would still be healing
I'd love to travel somewhere warmer for my
illness but then I'd
miss all this commotion
Again
I'd miss the chaos
The way people are just as they are
That's what I'd miss
And that's something you only find in Berlin And
do you ever feel like just taking off for a month
and heading somewhere like New Zealand or Tahiti
No I'm already connected to
Berlin I was born in Berlin grew
up in Berlin I was away
for a while but that's your world
I'm off on vacation too
I've been to Sri Lanka twice
It's a completely different world a different culture
But I already feel very
connected to Berlin especially to Prenzlauer Berg Have you
ever had the thought
or have you
perhaps already done that leaving Berlin for
a month in winter heading toward Portugal or Thailand
I'm afraid I can't
do that I work at the school I
can leave for a week So
skiing vacation of course
We've always done that with the kids in Italy too
But not in the warmth— I could do that during the Christmas holidays
I haven’t done it yet either
I’d really love to
I once did that—spending half a year traveling through Southeast
Asia where I escaped
the winter quite comfortably
Unfortunately financially it just doesn't stretch that far again
But I'll definitely keep dreaming about it yes
That's a certain stereotype about Berliners
in their thirties—that they have the right jobs
working from Portugal or Cape Town for the entire month
I haven't done that yet
I'm trying to prevent it
But it's certainly
appealing I see the four seasons we have in
Germany and I love that
I'm truly proud to witness this Because through this
you're able to observe
life beyond your own so clearly
It's so
varied and multifaceted
Having one is a privilege these days
I' m not even sure it really is a privilege
But also just making warm thoughts
Somehow you always end up waiting for the next season
Extremely true exactly
You're always waiting for the next season
And I also believe the winter
can bring many good things I
love winter Janusz what’s your
insight on winter in Berlin
After all the interviews my
conclusion is clear: people
cope very well with winter
and they truly enjoy it
And I also had the voice
saying it's very interesting
how the weather changes
throughout the year—the seasons
The seasons are beautiful
yes The seasons are
fun but not enough for me I want more summer
That's why we're both going on vacation soon
To Australia and New Zealand yes
We'll definitely be away for a few weeks
But otherwise we're still
enjoying winter We're glad you
tuned in again and that you're back out on the streets
You're very welcome my delight
See you in the next video Ciao
