Watch as a pair of humpback whales interact with my dog Fin in San Diego! Fin has spent the last few years learning the art of whale watching. He can sniff out dolphins and whales before we see them, and there's nothing he loves more than when these gentle giants come over to investigate his excited barking!
Of all the things I've seen working on the water every day,
watching my dog Finn fall in love with whale watching has been by far the most beautiful.
Finn is a six-year-old Labrador Golden Retriever mix that has mastered the art of whale watching.
He's always preferred dolphins to whales because he likes how the dolphins come over to the boat
and swim directly underneath him, which is perfect for sniffing and being splashed by the dolphin's
spouts. Erica and I had been waiting for the day where Finn would get to experience a true humpback
whale mugging, where Finn would get the same intimate opportunity with a whale.
We never imagined that the whales would fall equally in love with Finn.
He's had moments with friendly whales in the past, but nothing that's compared to what happened
last Saturday. For over 90 minutes, these two whales would repeatedly seek out Finn
wherever he was on the boat, clearly interested in his excited bargain.
Most of our humpback whale muggings tend to happen near the back of the boat,
but these two whales went out of their way to approach the bow where Finn was tethered.
There were countless spy hops where the whales stick their heads out of the water to better see
the people, and in this case, the dog, on the boat. If you're wondering whether Finn has jumped off the
boat before, he sure has. At just 12 weeks old, his first time on the boat, he ran right up to
bow, wiggled his little booty, and face-planted right into the bay. He ended up about 50 yards
behind the boat and promptly swam towards our swim ladder as if he had done it a hundred times before.
Ever since that day, Finn now remains tethered to the boat by his harness at all times.
Yeah, we're moving on, I think.
