In Scandinavia, the sun doesn’t rise for weeks... I’d heard about polar night for years while traveling through the Nordics, but I wanted to experience it for myself.
So I went above the Arctic Circle to see what life is like when daylight disappears completely.
I wanted to find out what it’s actually like traveling during polar night: how dark it really is, how it affects your body and energy, and what you do.

Just like that it's 2 o'clock and darkness. That's right, I'm deep inside the arctic circle
where the sun doesn't rise for weeks. Looks like 10 p.m but it's 10 a.m.
So I was wondering, is it actually that dark? Does it mess with your body? And what does it
feel like to travel here when day and night stop making sense? So I said goodbye to the sun and
came to Norway to see what it's all about.
Okay, so it's like minus 16 out.
We're ready. Maybe I'll get my camera so we can go to the light.
I can already foresee my first issue, not being able to see.
Freaking dark right here. Oh, pretty tree.
I'm missing to go down there. I mean, I do have my hiking boots on. You never know.
Plus I'm a bit of a klutz when I'm just walking around. So luckily, growing up in Canada,
I got to know what kind of ice and snow to walk on and what to avoid.
But look at this. This is tricky. That's going to be slippery.
Go, go, go.
I think I might have just spent 60 euros on supper.
Yeah, oh my god, 50 euros.
What? It must be the beer. It better be some good-ass beer.
Yeah, it's good. 20 euros good? No.
Don't judge me.
Time for one of my favorite attractions. I love going to grocery stores in foreign countries.
Minus 18 and shorts. That's next level.
You know, you can tell how cold it is outside by the crunch of your boots on the snow.
I'm going to make that sound.
It's cold.
But I love it.
You can't even see me, that's how dark it is. Right now, it's not so weird.
I mean, there's no moon, so it makes it even darker.
This is what it would be like where I live. So it's not so strange.
I think the shocker will be tomorrow morning, waking up and like going out
throughout the day and it still being dark. But let's see.
And that's it.
This is a funny thing. This room was about 150 euros for one night.
What's even more funny is that there's nothing for me to stir my coffee with.
I mean, I've got complimentary coffee. Pretty awesome.
But I don't know if I can stir with my fingers.
I know now I'm in high season because of the northern lights and
like all of the cool activities you can do in the snow and stuff.
So I do get it at the same time.
Where's my spoon?
Looks like 10 p.m., but it's 10 a.m.
I'm just like here chilling, wondering what I should do while it's minus 20 outside.
Can I have my coffee?
And of course, remember that I need to get outside and live my adventure,
even if it's cold and dark. That's why I made this merch.

So, yeah, it's time to get out.
It's gorgeous.
This is so beautiful.
I'm crying. It's so beautiful.
No, I'm just kidding. It's cold.
But like the blues, the pinks, the purples.
This is unreal.
I can do this because it's Norway.
I'm going to have a picnic.
My sandwich fell in the snow.
I dropped my sandwich in the snow, but at least it wasn't yellow snow.
It's 1 p.m.
This is so cool.
Bienvenue dans le Paris du Nord.
Bold claim.
Wow.
You can tell that it's getting darker.
So, time to climb.
I mean, I guess one of my questions is already answered.
You just keep living life, don't you?
I think if you didn't have any hobbies or activities, yeah, it would suck.
But who's to judge, right?
Plus, you need vitamin D.
Seasonal depression is a real thing.
We also do that in Canada.
It's always you lose one.
I don't know how that works.
I think that's it.
Basically going climbing because I don't really feel like running out here and minus cold.
So, I need to keep up my grip strength and everything.
Oh my god, look at that.
Wow.
I need to move my body, stay healthy, stay fit,
because I'm climbing the highest peak in every European country.
And this year, we're going to be some big daddies.
Hence, climbing.
I see the gym.
Oh, it looks like the one I usually go to.
Boom.
Yes.
Let's go.
This place is sick.
You're probably skeptical of why I'm not exploring Tromso with my time.
Well, I've accidentally been here before.
We explored the island and I even tried being Norwegian.
I'll add the videos to the description in case you're curious.
Plus, I had a bus scheduled to one of the best places to see the Northern Lights.
Just like that, it's two o'clock.
So yes, I'd be going to a special island,
but not just for Polar Night and the Northern Lights.
But because it's a place where supposedly time doesn't exist.
Not what you expected, right?
We neither.
And that's what's coming next video.
This calls for the big dad gloves.
I hope this is enough layers.
I mean, this jacket is really cozy and warm.
Let's try.
When I finally made it there, I was greeted by these.
Yeah, they're out.
See if I can get to a darker spot.
Yeah.
Oh, ----.
Wow.
I mean, this is just with my phone, but they're everywhere.
Oh, my gosh, it's so beautiful.
They're all around.
Holy.
It's like literally everywhere.
Wow.
Back to Polar Night, though.
I ended up staying here for a week and had a lot of time to reflect.
So here are my thoughts.
But at the end of it, you be the judge.
So quiet.
I don't know why I'm whispering.
So yeah, I came here for the Polar Night.
It's four o'clock and it's about minus 10.
I'm definitely used to it now.
But I had some other objectives as well.
One of them being to test out my gear to see if it was going to be good
for some upcoming mountains.
I didn't climb any mountains, but I wanted to test the temperature.
Forza!
So I did get to test minus 20.
So the upper side, good.
This jacket, warm.
Legs, cold.
So that means I need to get a better situation for my legs.
So I've had some time to reflect and it's been a week.
I can tell you that my sleep has been absolute mayhem.
Except for last night.
Last night was the first night where I slept for like 10 hours straight.
Now the thing is, I don't know if it's because of the Polar Night
or if it's because what's going on inside of me.
And the reason I say that is because lately I haven't been sleeping very well anyways
because I've been really stressed.
Anyways, I kind of guessed coming here to the Polar Night,
I would be sleeping like an absolute baby.
That's a weird saying because babies don't sleep very well.
Not my point.
I noticed that I was more sluggish in the morning.
I needed like stimulants like coffee and I call them gnocchos.
But like those energy drinks, those natural energy drinks to kind of get through the day.
And then of course I couldn't sleep until super late at night.
So that was strange.
But I did find that I gave myself a little bit more grace.
I didn't have this pressure to be productive because I think I feel that a lot.
But again, I don't know if that's Polar Night or if that's just...
Oh, hello.
I don't know if that's Polar Night or just the mindset shift
that comes when I'm traveling.
I feel this freedom and I'm in the Nordics.
I don't know.
That's a mystery to me still.
So it's only been one week out of eight weeks that the Nordics,
well let's be honest, Canada, Russia, probably some other places, experience.
So anyways, I've had some surprises over the last few days.
And one of the surprises has brought me to the conclusion that
it's fairly affordable to book flight somewhere else.
So why that's important is, what I'm thinking is,
is if I were to live here and I miss the sun,
I would just book like a cheeky weekend trip somewhere to the south
if I needed to do it again in a few weeks.
Because I'm also thinking salaries are higher here.
Sure, you have taxes, but your taxes are actually
like giving you what you're paying them.
And I say this because I've lived in countries where you pay high amounts of taxes
and you do not see those taxes.
Not really.
But that's just my take.
I don't live here.
I'm just a tourist.
This is just my observations.
So you be the judge.
What do you think?
Yeah, at the end of the day, cool experience.
I think I could do it.
I think I could live through this.
It feels like it's a bit of a reset.
Do you know what I mean?
Super curious.
Tell me your thoughts.
And yeah, if you like this kind of stuff, subscribe.
Because more cool stuff is coming.
