The Fischer/Furtwängler duo, already well known for their 1951 performance of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto, had accomplished a true tour de force nine years earlier, in the midst of the Second World War, during a public concert given in Berlin in 1942. One must go beyond the purely technical aspect of the recording in order to focus on this near‐definitive interpretation. Edwin Fischer draws on all of his physical, emotional, and technical reserves to deliver a powerful, full-bodied playing, with a force of character that probably pushes the mechanics of the piano to its very limits. Wilhelm Furtwängler, in perfect osmosis with his colleague, accompanies him with the usual Olympian grandeur that characterizes his conducting. A complete triumph!
Additional note: You will no doubt find other, brighter transfers on YouTube, but these have crushed the natural dynamics of the recording through excessive compression. As a result, the piano and forte passages sound at the same level of loudness. This edition, although darker, preserves this aspect, which we consider essential to respect.
