There are now two muscle car inspired electric SUVs from which to choose.
The new Chevrolet Blazer EV and the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
You're deciding which one of these to buy? Well, today's your lucky day.
Brand new for 2024, the Chevy Blazer EV is almost completely different from the gas-powered Blazer.
It seats five and comes in three trims with driving ranges that vary from almost
One of those trims is the blazing fast SS with an estimated sub-four-second sprint
from zero to 60 miles an hour. That's expected to launch in the spring of 2024
with a price tag of almost 66,000 bucks. The entry-level LT, however, starts at $56,715
and it's eligible for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. One unique feature of the Blazer EV is
that you'll be able to choose whatever wheel drive suits your needs best. You guys, this is amazing.
The Blazer EV will be available with front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive,
while the Mustang Mach-E only offers the latter two. Though there aren't any light interior color
options, which we think is unfortunate, the cabin offers plenty of soft touch points and can be
optioned with niceties like two-toned upholstery, ambient lighting, heated and ventilated front
seats, and heated rear seats. The Mustang Mach-E doesn't offer quite as many creature comforts.
The Blazer EV is slightly larger overall and has a roomier cabin than the Mustang Mach-E.
The seats are supportive and there's more headroom and shoulder room in both rows,
plus an inch and a half more leg room in the back seat. But the Mustang Mach-E is also comfortable,
spacious, and practical. There are several powertrain options that get you anywhere from
226 to 312 miles of range, depending on the battery and number of driven wheels. Pricing
for the 2024 Mustang Mach-E starts at $43,495 and it qualifies for a $3,750 federal EV tax credit.
While the high-performance GT models come pretty close in price to the Blazer EV SS,
the other Mustang Mach-E trims have a significantly lower cost of entry than the rest of the Blazer
EV lineup, and that's even after taking advantage of their different federal tax credits. Despite
its tapered roof, the Mustang Mach-E has four more cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats than
the Blazer EV does, with 29.7 cubic feet versus 25.5. There's even more storage space up front in
the Mach-E's frunk, a feature the Blazer EV doesn't have at all. At the center of the streamlined
dashboard is a vertical 15.5-inch infotainment screen. It's responsive and user-friendly, and
maybe most importantly it features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
You won't find either in the Blazer EV, which instead offers a Google built-in system and
Bluetooth connectivity for your phone. Oh, and you'll get standard wireless phone charging in
the Mach-E too. There is some overlap with the Chevy Blazer EV and Mustang Mach-E in terms of
similar driving ranges and their available high-performance trims offering wildly quick
acceleration. They also have matching warranty terms. The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV is definitely
a compelling all-new electric SUV that we found surprisingly fun to drive. With a spiffy, spacious
cabin, impressive range, and the ability to choose which wheels you want driven, it's really tough to
go wrong, but all of those things come with a pretty hefty price tag. All this being said, we
should note that Chevrolet issued a stop sell on the Blazer EV shortly after it launched due to
electronic issues. From a reliability perspective, the Mach-E for now is the more proven choice.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is considerably more affordable than its new Chevy rival,
and with that you still get great comfort, driving range, and performance. Throw in more cargo space
and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, is it even really a contest? Well that final decision,
that's up to you.
