Welcome! In this lesson, you'll learn how to express your opinion and agree or disagree in real conversations, all in French.
What is an opinion?
An opinion is something you think or believe, not a fact.
In French, it's often introduced with je pense que or à mon avis.
Useful phrase, je pense que. Je pense que means I think that.
Example, je pense que ce film est super. I think this movie is great.
Useful phrase, à mon avis. À mon avis means in my opinion.
Example, à mon avis, il a raison. In my opinion, he's right.
Agreeing politely. To agree, you can say, je suis d'accord. I agree.
C'est vrai. That's true. Exactement. Exactly.
Disagreeing politely. To disagree politely, je ne suis pas d'accord. I don't agree.
Pas vraiment. Not really. Ce n'est pas vrai. That's not true.
Other helpful words, peut-être. Maybe. Je crois que. I believe that.
C'est possible. It's possible.
Tone and respect. In French conversations, it's important to stay respectful, even if you disagree.
Use a calm voice and polite expression.
Mini-dialogue. A. Tu aimes ce film? B. Je pense que c'est trop long, mais intéressant.
A. Je suis d'accord avec toi.
Practice agree or disagree. Listen to three short opinions and choose.
Do you agree? Say it in French. Use, je suis d'accord, je ne suis pas d'accord.
Speaking strategy. Start with your opinion, give a reason, and ask the other person.
Example. Je pense que c'est bien parce que et toi?
Common mistakes. Don't confuse, je suis d'accord avec ça, which is incorrect.
Use, je suis d'accord or je suis d'accord avec toi.
Role-play time. Work with a partner.
One gives an opinion, the other agrees or disagrees.
Use at least three phrases from today's lesson.
Challenge yourself. Give your opinion on social media, school or work, a movie or book.
Use at least two agreeing and two disagreeing phrases.
Bravo! You've learned how to express and react to real opinions in French.
Keep practicing with your own ideas.
