Take care of your feet, and you care for your foundation.
Namaskar. Many people think that cracked heels are just cosmetic issues, but actually it is a
signal from your body which says that there is dryness in your system, imbalance in vata dosha
and lack of proper nourishment. Just applying some cream on the surface won't solve the root cause.
So today let's understand this condition holistically through remedies, diet and daily
habits. First of all you must know that cracked heel happens when the skin on the feet becomes
dry, thick and loses its elasticity. The reason can be simple like walking barefoot,
long hours of standing or cold weather, but it can also be because of dryness
due to dehydration, poor blood circulation or imbalance in the vata element. Ayurveda calls
this padadari where pitta and vata disturb the natural moisture of your skin. Let's start with
a very simple and time tested home remedy that you can prepare in your own kitchen. You will
need 2 tbsp coconut oil, 1 tbsp pure bee wax or ghee and 1 tsp turmeric powder. Now let's prepare
this. Warm the coconut oil slightly in a bowl. Add turmeric, bee wax or ghee into it. Mix well
until everything blends. Allow it to cool and then store in a small bottle. Every night before
sleeping, wash your feet with warm water. Scrub gently with a pubic stone to remove dead skin.
Wipe, dry and apply this mixture generously over your heel. Wear a clean cotton pair of socks.
Do this for 7 to 10 nights and you will notice that heels becoming soft and smooth. This remedy
is very simple, right? If you have more time, you can apply some other pack like banana and honey
pack or neem and tulsi paste. For banana and honey pack, mash one ripe banana with a teaspoon of
honey and apply it to your heel. Leave for 20 minutes and then wash. This hydrates and repairs
your skin. Neem and tulsi paste can be prepared by grinding fresh neem and tulsi leaves with a few
drops of lemon juice. Apply this paste if you have infected or deeply cracked heels to reduce
itching and preventing infection. When it comes to cracked heel, healing is not just external.
What you eat also affects the texture of your skin. So you must have good fat like ghee,
sesame oil, coconut oil, etc. to nourish your tissue. Hydrating foods like cucumber,
bottlegourd and soaked dry fruits are good for you. Also warm herbal tea like cumin,
coriander, fennel to balance vat and pitta. Reduce dry, spicy, salty food that increase
internal dryness. And now let me give you some lifestyle tips as well.
Learn and practice yogasanas like Yogendra talasana, Yogendra ganudasana to improve blood
flow to your lower limbs. Avoid long hours of standing and walking barefoot on hard or dirty
surfaces. Soak your foot weekly in warm water with a pinch of rock salt to soften dead skin
and relax your tired feet. Avoid harsh soap and hot water baths as they take away natural oil
and increase dryness. Wear soft breathable footwear. Choose cotton socks and well cushioned
shoes to avoid friction and pressure on your heel. Remember that health begins from awareness.
Even something as simple as cracked heel teaches us balance between rest and activities,
dryness and oiliness, outer care and inner nourishment. Your feet carry your entire
weight every single day. When you care for your feet, you care for your foundation. Namaskar
