Some things have been old for decades
What is a traditional house
A traditional house is a single-story structure with a double-pitched roof and an altar
positioned in the center This layout is unsuitable for the space constraints of Hanoi
It shouldn't be in this traditional house A
traditional Vietnamese house doesn't simply
appear naturally A traditional house is the culmination of the following relationships
It's been accumulating for thousands of years and only now has it emerged as a traditional home
A traditional
home is a reflection of psychological essence—perfectly harmonious with everything
It's perfect to stay at the family home and live traditionally when the relatives are around
As a series of videos exploring ancient houses in Đường Lâm we'
ve witnessed the rich diversity of traditional Vietnamese homes
And today Viet Quyen will introduce
to you all a truly extraordinary house
With a uniquely distinctive design completely
different from the houses in Đường Lâm
Now please join us as we go inside with Quyen
When you come in here
I noticed that the width of the
entrance is extremely narrow with
stone walls on both sides and looking at this stalk-like passage
It reminds me of those old
Chinese rural films I used
to watch as a kid There's
even this little character here
Alright now I'll knock on the door
Hello uncle
Hello nephew
You should start recording
Yes sir
I understand I'm Quyen
We are currently exploring the culture of the ancient
houses in Đường Lâm particularly
in the village of Bồng Phụ
And today we'really eager
to learn about our own home
Then please help introduce
me to the
audience as well Please come in Thank you
Please come in everyone
When I stepped inside the yard I was
really impressed The uncle's house is
full of greenery a fish pond and especially an abundance of chrysanthemums
Here the batch of fermented soybean paste
It's raining today
And the Lunar New Year is coming up soon everyone
Drink some water dear Yes
I'll drink some water
Is it raining again today little one
It hasn't rained today it's just a bit chilly
Yes ma'am
Pay attention when I
entered the house I noticed
you have many photos
but I 'm not sure about your job
You can tell
everyone about your previous job and your current
one Actually the photo in the
house was taken and drawn by her
Will you take a photo of the cat
too She takes photos and draws
She photographs everything in the house
She's an artist
She went on to teach middle school Yes
Her profession is that of an artist
You have nothing to do with that
You just arrange the furnishings
inside the house to suit her tastes
He is a writer
He works at Bao Wen Ye
His job is to read the short story section of Bao Wen Ye
And edit it
so that the
printing job can
be carried out properly And
once a week there
are some Now
the uncle still goes to work
You drafted the contract for Bao Van Nghe
You're still handling the contract for Bao Van Nghe
Are you doing it
at home If you do it then the landlord
has to go to the office
On Monday Uncle
left the school So by Monday afternoon Uncle was back here again
In that prison the environment wasn't
compatible with the atmosphere of Hanoi
It can't be in this traditional house
So it's only 5 to 10 kilometers from Hanoi That's why when cycling
back when riding a bike home
e
Feeling very comfortable living this way
The traditional Vietnamese house is
not something that naturally appears
The traditional house is
e sum of all social relationships
It has persisted for thousands of years
It is only now that the traditional house emerges
The traditional house is
This physiological
disposition perfectly aligns
with everything Therefore when someone who
grew up in prison returns home to live in a
traditional household it feels entirely natural
Since your profession is
a creative one and with
having a space like this I 'd
come up with more ideas
What is a traditional house
A traditional house is a single-story home with two sloping roofs and an
altar placed in the center
This definition was established by Mr Tomoda
Romichi he is at a prestigious
academy in the land
of Chouwa He travels with
Japan's revolutionary group
He couldn't quite define
it but
then it merged with
Nenri's thesis She went
to cultivate in Guanghai
She wrote her thesis on Mông
Phu a village in Đồng Văn
Then the cultural publishing
house gradually reorganized
I
focused on several manuscripts
by various scholars before
compiling one volume titled "
Mong Phu: A Village
in Dong Van "
That's amazing
Mong Phu a village in Dong Van
This one isn't for sale It's
been around for
ages It came out
a very long time ago Tung Trung
and Nenri are from Quang Hai
The book he gave
to his
father—here's the inscription
inside Very precious
Here's the gift
This is a gift
For my grandfather your father
Your father passed away twenty years ago
It's been over twenty years now
Then Mr Tung would
come out and say
Mr Tung would
define a one-story
house as a one-story house a one
-trip house as a one-story house
There are two machines with a table
in between He
touched upon the core issue facing the Vietnamese people
That is he brought up the matter of
Lăng Liêu
and Wu
Xiong Lăng Liêu
Making the sticky rice cakes the people offered them to Mr Vu Hung Mr Vu Hung then passed
the position on to Mr Lang Liao
We have the ancient virtue of
filial piety which in the family
is honored by placing it in the
central position of the home
From the day this house was built
until now the
tradition of honoring
one's ancestors and parents has
remained at the
center of the home
On this side they worship Tấu Công on
this side they venerate
Bà Cô Mãnh then the
groom's mother worships Buddhism—there
is an integration and the altar is shared
Bà Cô Mãnh comes in from this
side and is enshrined on
the other side because the Vietnamese
tradition is to venerate Buddhism
This house when I walked
into the courtyard of my own home I
noticed that my house had been
completely surrounded by a wall
Now could you briefly
talk about the total area
of your house and the
architecture of your property
This house is situated on a
detached piece of land positioned precisely where the
terrain allows such construction
400 meters has 300 meters
Four houses with
one shared courtyard
—this is unique here nowhere else The
four houses face rain and
sun on all sides yet remain dry They have doors
Running around without a care
But each raindrop falls separately
They remain detached from one another
It's an open-frame structure so
if one part burns it's gone completely
It doesn't burn together as a whole That's what made ancient designs unique
With a design like this
where would the water go It
has to flow out through
that building—
the guesthouse
The water gradually flows into
the center to achieve hydraulic
balance Only then
does it resume
operating along a water channel
Pass through the tree pass
stay inside the house Go outside The entrance to
the house is very narrow The path
leading into the house
is extremely tight
The house is extremely cramped so much so
that it's not that there aren't visitors
coming here but rather that there's simply
no space inside the house It feels overcrowded
But there's a reason
for its tightness
It's not hollow it must be resonant
So the houses there don't have
doors The houses there only have
gates Yes
You can explain it more clearly for
example like this: I see four houses So the purpose of each house for
instance the one we'
re sitting in now is
Is this the main house Uncle
The house we're sitting in now is the main house
It's called the church
The house below is the guest house
The one next to it belongs to the teacher
This house belongs to the lord's grandfather The two rooms on
either side are for the
minor noble's quarters
The livestock area and
the kitchen are located in the lower house
Now that the house is cramped we' ll
divide it between the lord The
kitchen staff will move upstairs
There's no longer a teacher around
Each of its houses has a distinct function
A unique function
This architectural style emerged during the period when
Vietnam's agriculture is characterized by strong grassroots foundations
Therefore it is a vital space for community engagement
It is a space where communities come together all the way down to the grassroots level
Such extended family
structures still exist here
Grandparents parents and children live together
And even three wedding fires asking
for milk repayment—this summer's
collection still exists in this space It's the communal function Yes
Then today just like
the audience I'm very
interested in the
history of this house
This house is built with an inner courtyard and an outer guest entrance
Inside one can play as if outside
This row of doors here
is indeed a row of doors
There are 12 doors
The 12 doors are what slow it down
But now the house no longer needs to close the doors
He's not at home
Yes
In this village there are only two houses
with the distinctive architectural style of a
foreigner's inner residence—meaning your
grandfather's house Your grandfather is the one who
Nguyen Trong Nguyen's An Sat Restaurant
in Quang Binh Province a local favorite has
served generations—yet even after a lifetime
of service the owner had to leave far behind
You're from An Sat District in Quang Binh Province
The spirits have just
arrived When you return to your village you'll build a house where the inner guest room is outside and the outer guest room is inside
This house is lower than that one
Well then he was punished for overstepping
So why was the husband's brother the blind man exempt
Why were the children
The processor is no
longer intact Stock up on
supplies inside it It's
not what it used to be
It also has ornate couplets
and horizontal banners
but it's a brand-new house Stepping inside is
It carries the dream snake a
different kind of dream snake But that house is
lower than this one
So you're the son-in-law of Aunt An's shop
Build the house behind
Now the room is elevated
It's now very spacious
From the outer guest area
Even fits an extra chair
So you can still just sit and relax
By the end of 1846 this house
was built and to this day the
nephew's descendants have lived
here for thirteen generations
It's already the 13th generation
Now you can tell me a
little about
your impression
of life in the
old house and
see what makes it special
And the second thing is how
your uncle along with the family
adapts and integrates traditional
customs into modern life
That age of uncle perfectly fits
within a traditional
Vietnamese house
People don't call it an old house
What exactly makes something old
A hundred-year-old
house is considered ancient A
house just a few decades old
is already deemed
old-fashioned People call it traditional It fits perfectly
The matter of daily movement and activities
For example the floor is made of very hot tiles And
you don't have to take off your shoes
Occasionally sweeping clears it up nicely
At home
on the first floor no need to wear a ladder around your neck
That's it
The flow in and out is very
well designed Outside the area
has tiles but it 's
very spacious
—perfect for dispersing crowds
Mood everything feels very relaxed
This house is dusty
This house the children don't like living
in They think it's haunted by a ghostly figure tangled in candy Yet the old man
has grown accustomed to it over time
The children are comfortable here
It feels natural when it goes home It
takes care of the kids very naturally
And everything
family life
It's harmonious Each house
has its own function Now
it's being expanded Each
house has its
own private room
In that old house it was the
space for the
community So where
does one find
room for personal
activities Here the houses
All rooms have been fully renovated
The rooms have been completely renovated
Inside the rooms air conditioning units are installed
The rooms are
separate
A place of independence for it to exist
Even the uncle in his work is no different
Not like in the old days when it was just a storage room for rice and grain
Food is nonsense
And yet
The space designated for the community is now limited to
just three spiritual chambers—exclusively
for the community All
other spaces are meant for independence
Independent living
When living in this house
I still feel a sense of freedom
I still feel the presence of electricity
I still feel everything is modern
I'm not trying hard
o turn it into a museum—a
very dull museum It still
has endless corridors
still has electric lights
It still has everything—meaning
it still has life It remains
a vibrant youth culture nurtured by the spirit of the tree
For the past two hundred years
But no one
has said there isn't
That's our difficulty
And that
Others' houses don't do that
But this house
seems to have everything as if
So that it could move forward like
that But it turned out differently
It didn't become
a
museum Difficult
It becomes a dwelling sustained by continuous spirit
Therefore only a human residing within this dwelling
could truly dwell there
and remain
But if we turned it into a museum that wouldn't work
Yes So I'm actually living inside it
Bring life to it
It's not about giving but about
life itself Life demands it this way
It must have
electricity it must have water it must have sewage systems
That's how you survive But what is life really like
How do you navigate
it That's the hard part
This structure is a non
-load-bearing
building The enclosing walls are for enclosure only
The column bears all the load
The wall serves only as a protective barrier
Yes That's why the structural system is designed this way
of a house that resists forces
it has rafters
It includes the structural components
of the rafters
And it connects the beams together
And in every
case it turned
out to be excellent The
trials endured through the bombings of 1967 and 1968
The bombs hit home
in year one They
kept dropping right into the house
But the other house is completely
shattered This one rattles
all over Yet it still holds
together That’s an earthquake
By around 7 to 8 degrees of tilt
the structure likely couldn't
withstand the load That's just how the component was
built So then—
Follow me everyone
—let's take a
look at how it's
assembled Yes sir
This house is uniquely
designed it lacks
a load-bearing
frame Therefore an entire
section spans
five bays in length
It's very prone to
collapsing because
right now the structure
is held together
only by soil without any cement like
today The soil is just turned and dug
That's why it has a
shield wall The shield
wall consists of the walls it clings to
It pierces it tears—like
a fang It's like those
fangs gripping tightly It
causes the
drum to collapse
The drum sounds outwards
That's how it achieves such a unique structure
The traditional house of the Vietnamese people
consists of three spaces
This space is spiritual in
nature Separated
from the other
areas by wooden lattice
screens These wooden partitions
They call it a salt-turning
machine But this salt-turning machine here
has no salt-turning houses These houses do not turn salt
This house is smooth
Yet
On the roof there are candies
The candies are
just like any other houses
They're similar to the houses
being built today
But what makes it
different is that
the overhangs and the openings are
very short Since it's made of wood
those short overhangs are strong
Short bursts make it
stronger Long stretches
aren't allowed short
bursts make it strong
Out here there 's
a ridge beam
This is the ridge beam Very
strong Large and
sturdy On the
roof's peak
there's a purlin
It's the base layer laid
down like this The top layer
is for the tiles The tiles
themselves are clay tiles
About 180 to 200 tiles per
square meter making them
heavier than Song Cau tiles
but significantly better
And very peculiar
For this house
what's unusual is
there's something different about
the outer statue facing the guest area So the column's door is closed
but not the column's door
The mother column is
this column The mother column is this one
The daughter column is this one
Outside the door of this column
But this house has the door of the column
thing So what does the door of the column thing mean
This one has all the supports tying the
bottom row together Tying the bottom
row together That's
why it's very sturdy
It's not stable at the top of the alley
It's firmly grounded beneath the surface
Always solid underfoot
That's why its structure is
extremely stable
And nowadays those new
houses
That is unattainable
On this side lies Zuli
Shenghui the Four Great
Mystical Palaces Shoujing
River Zuli Shenghui
The Four Great Mysterious Courts of Shoujing River
Zi Li Sheng Hui is
the root of death
Sheng Hui Huang
the root of death is the
place where one is born
born Huy Hoang
Four Great Mystical Hall
four generations
living in this house
Mystical Hall of Shoujing River
meaning hung in front
If a mansion is like a vast
wild tower it cannot hang another
mansion the Four Great Mysterious
Halls cannot hang other mansions
The Four Great Mystical Halls span four generations living under one roof
meaning four generations
four eras
the peak of the mountain the tranquil spring pavilion each week separately upper two springs painted
on that very beautiful day they held
the celebration ceremony known as the
Khao Noi Festival
which is also called
the Festival of the Fiftieth Year
The two old men celebrating spring together—there
are still two elderly men without wives and even
though they have two cups
of wine to welcome the new
year they can't hang it
on another household's door
That's why lately some people keep
buying couplets to hang but honestly
do they even fit The ones made
for the house can be hung anywhere
couplets in this category are known as
model couplets such as the
translated "Poem on the Four Seasons " a classical form of literary composition
e first one is loyal and sincere
Qian Yuan School's couplets
are not just any
they are not随意
not just hung anywhere
These couplets inside are from
Back when our elders
built houses building a
house was already complete hanging couplets
was just part of the game but over here it's
a truly beautiful poem
and the poem itself is
I felt
hesitant and didn't want to worship Buddha back then
afraid because they haven't learned the character "nhò"
so they don't know what the content is
this poem is
written in
Long Phi
is a lineage
descending from the Nguyễn
dynasty
originating when
Thang Long was
renamed Hanoi
wants Hanoi to no longer be the land within
the river no longer the flying stream of
Thang Long because it is no longer the
capital and to bring the capital into Kinh Do
Inside Huế scholar Bác Hà refuses to
yield scholar Bác Hà
recaptures Long Phi
Mostly Long Phi
Long Phi Kỳ Tĩ
at banana tree
—that is it has
a shoot growing from its base
the new power the new heart the hidden thread that binds
it's like a sealed letter
wrapped tightly like a sealed letter
it ensnares a person's fate
Nguyễn Xue Tâmn helps renew virtue by studying to nurture the
new virtue the heartfelt letter
arises from the renewed letter
depending on that new awareness that
This is a new kind of awareness
so that is a poem
and after I think
to honor the Buddha of Compassion the Bodhisattva
this is very fitting
And what about over
here Come over here
On this side are the two characters Mạc
Hương because I'm a writer—Mr Pham Vinh
Hai is the one who gave me this name Mạc
Hương refers to the fragrant scent of ink
and what you're trying to say is
that we'll have some
good books but we
haven't managed to do it yet as for this these are two
stamps from Germany
My mother's death certificate
was hidden by
my father all along
but when I grew up I discovered
it still existed—this document is
Zhide's foolish youth seventh
month of the year
this is Zhide's
tenth decade truly
the first day
of the month truly
the seventh day
Then those two seals
belong to my father—
seal number one being
from Sơn Tây Province
and the other being from the physician
Thi Thí Y Sinh Hà Văn
Bản a friend of mine
Sơn Tây Province
Quang Huy Prefecture
Phuc Luu County Cam
Thinh District
Mong Phu Village
official appointment granting my mother the title of
practitioner of medicine
Almost as if I were running
the Department of Culture the Department of Traditional
Medicine overseeing
the drug manufacturers yet not understanding that
what I'm doing now is preparing
medicine for my mother
What kind of medicine is it You have to
install the management
system for those people
otherwise you wouldn't know Now I finally
see what that old-style seal looked like
And now that it's noon today
Uncle Huyen has treated the
crew to a really delicious
meal Uncle Huyen you're the best
You could introduce to me and
the audience the special dishes
on display here—
like the chicken
meat—so we can learn about them
This is sugar cane chicken
mía was the region historically
known as Cải Mía now the village of
Đường Lâm and it's
uncertain whether
she was the daughter of Vũ Hùng
Teaching the people to grow a type of grass that after a
week of fermentation turns into
something resembling sugarcane
—called "sugarcane greens"—is what Professor Kiều Thu
Hoạch referred to when he mentioned the word "sugarcane "
That's sugarcane and the sugarcane
region refers to this area which is
famous for sugarcane chicken the
chickens are raised
by several engineers
Several PhDs said I'm keeping the Son Phuong sugarcane chicken breed or maybe I'm keeping
the Son Phuong tiger
chicken breed or perhaps
I'm raising the farm island chicken breed
At Son Phuong camp
this is utterly absurd
The sugarcane chicken must be raised on sugarcane
land the tiger chicken must be raised on farm islands
the farm island chicken must be raised on farm islands
the tiger chicken must be raised in tiger villages
If you raise them there they produce
the local chicken breed a specialty
unique to each region something that
can't be hoarded or kept exclusive
It's also known as the resting
place the resting
place the resting
place is the air there the sand
and soil there the chicken is there
It eats that kind of sandy soil
it breathes in the air like that
it produces something like that
but bringing the seed back
somewhere to raise it is wrong
He can only preserve the variety but the
product quality can't be the same—You can't
transplant Taichung tea
to grow in Thai Binh
nor can you grow Xiangran longan elsewhere
the central region
this specialty
crop can only be grown in that
specific area so
the rice chickens
here are a true local specialty
The meat of the chicken is chewy and
firm while the chickens here are selected
according to strict standards—perfectly balanced with strong legs and
sturdy wings
The rooster's head is small
its comb is large
the rooster's wings are two wings folded inward
very strong
and the castrated rooster
They can raise them to 3–4 pounds up
to 4–5 pounds and
by the time they're a
full year old the meat is rich with the fatty goodness of a castrated rooster
leaning on the chicken's back
the second product is
roasted meat
the roasted meat here comes in many varieties
There are places where they roast the
entire pig and other places where they don't
cut of meat only just one piece
of pork belly
but here
it's usually
a whole pork belly
The most important part is pulling it out turning
it then after turning they
wrap the meat around
a stick
and that' s how it goes into the prepared skewer
It takes six or seven hours to roast
constantly turning it like this and that's
what makes the roasted
meat here a unique
specialty you can't find anywhere else
When it's ripe it doesn't fall off
yet when you eat it it's incredibly sweet The
second thing is the
whole line of soy sauce
—just thinking about
it makes me miss home
like seaweed longing for the entire
stream—people thought this was just a
playful rhyme but in reality it's a
verse of devotion from Mr Thanh Tịnh
Master Jingjing he composed
this prayer
inscription Master
Jingjing is the one who said
he often recites sacred words
He said the words: "You're my
rice I'm your rice
when you laugh I
laugh when you
cry I cry we face
each other with
bitter sincerity "
Both wives are considered first wives by custom a practice
associated with Mr
Thanh Tịnh whose saying has led people
to mistakenly believe
this to be the norm
Then the entire current line can't be processed anymore
Long ago they used to ferment
an entire stream
of soy sauce —so much that it overflowed filling a huge vat completely
Rice grown by hand rice cultivated by farmers
By the time the plow tree is fully
dried take that
entire fruit and soak
it in sweet water after soaking lift
it out and squeeze out all the water
Soak the leaves in water squeeze out
all the water repeat this process three times until all the water is fully
extracted then add to
the brine for pickling
Soak from
August to October
keep it clean and clear
stir the salt by hand only
then is it truly delicious
Both the salted and the brined ones should
be cut with a zigzag edge to look beautiful resembling a small red pond—only those who've
tasted them once can
truly remember those words
you go you miss
home you miss the bitter melon soup you miss the stream of soybean paste
so now when the grandchild hears
this phrase
it means
I'll let the brine sit for 6 to 8
months then go through three rounds
of well water
processing and that 's
when the well water is soaked
Suck the fruit dry press out all the juice soak and press three times to extract all the liquid
then add it to the brine once the fruit is
fully marinated in the
brine drain off the syrup
The child accidentally didn't eat it
It absorbs all the sweetness
into itself and
only when the
entire fruit is poured in
does it truly become valuable
—this is the essence here
Today there are also products
made from root vegetables and
this region is known for them
Growing vegetables
for dried vegetable roots
people
dry them out
in case of sudden need what
about here with such food
These are dried
radishes—come on have some rice with me Yes
ma'am
Thus by today's end Vít Quyền
had also finished exploring
Uncle Hiến's old house and enjoyed
the region's special dishes
the Đường Lâm area
as well as in Mông Phụ village
