Welcome to another Burgundy with Tweedie video. These wines in the back garden never seem to work
quite as well do they? Particularly when it's dark and cold like this because I can never be bothered
to come back out for a later appraisal. I think part of the joy of the sitting in the woods videos
is that I usually have the chance to sit there for a bit and I can kind of mull the wine over
over the course of two or three glasses but when it's in the back garden you just get a first
impression which is not always a fair one. So sorry in advance to this wine. This is a wine
I first became aware of because a wine shop that I sometimes use in London, I haven't for a while
to be honest but I have used in the past in London, was selling it at an eye-watering price.
It's an Haute Cote de Nuit which is normally a sort of place to find comparative bargains in
Burgundy. Fingal Rock sells Gavigny's Haute Cote de Nuit at under 30 quid a bottle I think some of
them. This can be a place for finding by the crazy standards of Burgundy absolute bargains whereas
this wine shop aforementioned I feel like I shouldn't name it that's somehow cruel
was selling this at 90 quid a bottle which you know to my mind was three times what I'd expect
to pay for Bourgogne Haute Cote de Nuit. Of course there is absolutely no reason why all producers
should sell it at the same price that Gavigny happened to but Gavigny's Haute Cote de Nuit
I think is very very good and if they can make good wine from that appellation at that sort of
price why can't everyone else? So this is a producer called Sylvain Catiard is it am I pronouncing that
probably not Sylvain Catiard? I get the sense they're probably quite a well-regarded producer
or at least the shop that was selling them think they're a well-regarded producer to put that
what I consider to be very high price on a relatively lowly appellation by Burgundy standards
however I did not buy it from them I'm really doing a terrible job of getting the cork out
there it was a bit a bit tight I did not buy this bottle from this aforementioned anonymous
wine shop this was on sale at Ley & Wheeler for half that price but I believe it was the
same vintage same appellation same producer half the price 90 quid at this wine shop in London
45 quid online from Ley & Wheeler so it's a wine I would have continued to turn my nose up at
and I had to pay the original price well the original price this particular shop was
charging because I have this notion of what I think is a reasonable price for Haute Cote de Nuit
lighting terrible as always but I'm getting a sense of a slightly paler color there and that
is something you can get from the Haute Cote de Nuit as I always say it's higher up 400 meters
and the initial nose is as is often the case of almost nothing some wines really do need that
first swirl don't they to give you anything but what I can detect there is a sort of vague sense
of possibly hedgerow fruits and rose hip something like that and something slightly woody so I'm
getting a definite sense of a hedge there which is a first impression I would have been disappointed
with had I shelled out 90 quid for this but predictably with a bit of a swirl
um a little bit more berry fruit but it's still a bit giving the sense of something a bit scratchy
I'm getting quite a hedgy sense and quite a woody sense there as well sawdusty almost
from that uh perhaps this is going to need quite a while to wake up so this
quick evaluation it's going to get here from the first glass is maybe unfair some sort of
berry fruit there but it's not very well pronounced even with a lot of swirling there
and still sort of background woody notes and hedgerow sort of notes getting a definite
sense of probably brambles I think here and perhaps that's factoring into the berry notes the um
maybe a bit of blackberry but it's a bit more red fruit all right well it fared better on the palette
than the nose is doing so far I'm sure the nose will develop and wake up a bit more the weight
of that on the palette is towards the lighter side again as I say that's not atypical for
the oat coat and wee which is at higher altitude therefore a bit less sun
slightly cooler than down in the valley berry fruit I suppose but on the slightly lighter side
yeah and that's quite a pleasant mouthfeel as I say with a caveat it's it's light but um
it has a kind of uh an agility to it the sensation of moving it across the palette
moving it across the tongue feels quite effortless it's a it's a nice
light sensation and there definitely is some fruit presence there some
berry fruit the tannins are very fine if I'm noticing them at all I'm sure this nose
has a bit more to give a little bit of subwa there a bit of sort of mushroomy
the undergrowth underneath the hedge this is all very hedge centric
edge core a bit more berry fruit a bit more something like rose hip some of the scratchy
woodiness is subsiding a bit but I think that's just giving way to the subwa and the undergrowth
not really getting a huge amount of fruit or flour flour could just mean you know wheat flour
that would be a weird note probably does exist in wine doesn't it light though it is I do find that
palette pleasant but it's not really doing a huge amount for me at the moment very rustic
hedgerow-y subwa rose hips berry fruit hedgerow type berry fruit bit woody bit scratchy light
not unpleasantly so but um it's not really doing a huge amount for me so at this price point well
it's still a little bit steep for oak cotonou even at 45 but I would definitely have been
quite disappointed had I handed over 90 quid for that I think so far at least unless some magical
metamorphosis happens over the next hour or two if I do have a revelation I will try and make the
effort to come back outside and tell you about it but if nothing else happens then that is the
state of it it's okay it really doesn't deserve to be at that price point in that shop that's
all I can be bothered to say for now cheers
