Hi everyone, Charlie here and I'm standing at the foot of a glacier.
For the next two days my friends and I are camping and exploring this remote landscape.
We're venturing into ice caves, getting stuck on cliffs and eating some amazing food.
Well for the first time ever I'm starting a hike without my shoes on.
We've got to cross this river before we head up.
It's quite cold.
Quite a big drop down there into that gorge.
A big storm would have brought down these trees.
They're big mature mountain beech trees.
There's the original stump.
On the other side of the mountain range there's a big hanging valley.
They carve out those big u-shaped valleys.
Hayden's found himself a good seat.
Well I've got some more of my mum's baking here.
This is like a trail mix cookie.
It's got nuts, M&Ms, a bit of everything.
Even some marshmallow as well.
I'm sorry guys, I ate all the rest of this at home so there's none to share.
See how those rocks over there are way darker?
Those rocks are super rich with heavy minerals like iron and manganese.
It's a kea that's just landed on that rock there.
Funny we had our cameras there.
Oh look what we found.
This is one of the survival huts built in these mountains.
It's one of the nicer ones actually.
They're built for hikers, hunters and explorers.
And birds as well.
People can use these to escape harsh weather or if they're pushing on for bigger missions.
That was a steep climb.
I definitely want a proper lunch.
Hayden's brought up an entire pie.
I'm pretty jealous.
He's copying me.
Oh no, I dropped the bag in.
This hut collects rainwater on its roof and they fill up these tanks here.
We're checking out this little shelter here.
We're not sure what it's used for.
It's locked so we can't get inside.
In the peak months they have a warden that stays here to look after the main hut.
It's got a whole bunch of supplies in there for them.
It's our first sign of some snow.
Tell you what guys, my feet are about the only part of my body
that are the perfect temperature.
The socks are moisture wicking so it wicks away all my sweat.
That water's coming directly from the ice melt up there.
Tastes fresh and cold.
Our first glimpse of the lake that we're staying at.
The problem is we don't know how to get down.
I think we've ventured a little bit off the track.
Thomas is the rock climber of the bunch.
Making easy work of it.
All of these rocks around here are really orange.
They've got lots of iron in them and when the iron is exposed to the air
it reacts and creates iron oxide.
That's what gives it that orange colour.
Carabiner there.
All right.
I got it, I got it, I got it.
It's just to there, just to there.
That might not have been the wisest choice of route.
Well we've made it to the lake but there's not much to see.
On the other side of that lake is a big glacier.
The clouds lifted and you can see across the lake now.
Look, you can just see the glacier poking through the cloud.
This rock that I'm standing on is so smooth.
It's been ground away by the glacier for over thousands of years
and it leaves behind crystal clear pools like this that have been untouched by humans.
This is actually ice here.
It's super compact and it's got heaps of sediment over it.
Should be okay to walk across.
We need to cross this river if we want to get into the ice caves
but it's just far too dangerous up here so we have to head back down.
That's an awesome tent spot but I doubt we could fit all three of us there.
There's the ice cave.
This here is super compacted glacial ice.
The ice at the bottom has that bluey colour.
It's been compressed down so much.
There's a crack running down this whole sheet of ice.
The ice at the top is melting and it's dripping into the river here.
It's like it's raining.
Here's another cave.
The ice down low is super compressed.
It wickled.
Well it's getting super late and we don't have a place to sleep yet
so we're going to go and find a campsite.
The water in this river is so powerful.
It's carved away and created channels under the rocks.
If you fell in that river there's a good chance you'd get sucked under there and not make it out.
Well it's hard to see anywhere around here but we found what looks to be a good camp spot.
We just need to do a bit of terraforming.
Oh wait no really good idea.
I'm falling quite far behind.
All right not the smartest move of my career.
Do not need it that hot.
Why is your hair wet?
Look at that some cheesy hot dogs.
Time to dig in.
I'm starving.
Not a bad place for some dinner.
Well this is a very nice place to be
and despite walking through all the snow my feet are still really warm.
My socks are made out of alpaca wool
so they regulate temperature in my feet and they wick away the moisture.
Look at how blue the water is.
There's our campsite all the way over there with the glacier behind it
and the peaks are now just coming through the clouds.
This is a no fall zone.
Thomas has joined me to finish off dinner.
Instead of gourmet cooking he's gone for a dehydrated meal.
I've never been a fan but he's going to try and convert me.
You know what considering that what five minutes ago that was just some powder in a bag
that's not that bad.
I feel like the experience of cooking your own meal in the mountains though is worth the effort.
Aidan's joined us as well and he's got mac and cheese.
Doing the dishes is easy up in the mountains.
Well we've retreated into the tents because as you can hear it's raining quite heavily now
and to make matters worse my sleeping bag has a slow leak.
Super late now.
I want to get into my warm gear and make a hot chocolate before bed.
Oh that feels so nice.
I finally put on my warm socks guys.
Oh that is cozy.
If you want to check out the alpaca socks that I'm wearing
I'll leave a link in the description or put a barcode on the screen if you're watching on TV.
All right well before bed I really want that hot chocolate
and instead of a regular hot chocolate I've got some of the best in the world.
This is pretty famous here in New Zealand.
It's from Puhoi Valley and it's a honeycomb and real chocolate milk.
I'm going to heat it up and it should be a nice cozy drink before bed.
It's got the rich chocolate taste as well as the sweet honey taste.
That's so so good.
Better than any other hot chocolate I've ever had.
I've got some crispy M&Ms on demand as well.
All right I need to get into my sleeping bag.
Seems like the patch I did on the sleeping mat has held up really well.
I've been looking forward to this all day and it has been a pretty long day
so I'm going to wind down with some videos before I go to sleep.
Oh good morning everybody.
I did not sleep very well last night.
I spent hours trying to patch up my sleeping mat but more and more holes started to appear
and so I just ended up spending the night shivering in my sleeping bag.
Oh good morning guys.
I'm making pancakes for breakfast but at the moment all I've got is the flour.
Pancakes, maple syrup and blueberries.
Pancakes and blueberries are hard to beat in the morning.
We've got a really good view of that mountain now that we're about to leave.
The others are just finishing packing up now and I'm checking the state of the river crossing.
Definitely more water in it than yesterday.
Well yesterday we came all the way down that face there.
It definitely wasn't the right route so today we're going to find another way up.
Well there's the hut down there but we have to traverse this whole valley in here
and there's no marked trail.
The last descent.
Time to cross the river one last time.
Thank you guys so much for watching this video
