Do you ever wish you could try working in a role before you enter that field? If you’re wondering what a marketer does, like helping promote businesses and services through the use of marketing campaigns, then learning about the daily life of a marketing manager could help you decide if this is the career for you.
In this video, we follow Ron, a marketing manager for a non-profit organization, as he shows you what a day in the life of a marketer is actually like, including work hours, work environment and job duties. He’ll even share the skills and education needed to be successful in the role.

Hi, I'm Ron and this is the day in the life of a marketing manager. Let's go. I've worked at the
community table for almost a year. My role is as the volunteer and marketing manager is to promote
the organization and to raise brand awareness. And basically I do all their social media,
any kind of digital marketing, traditional marketing. I don't have much of a routine
other than I go to get coffee every morning. All right. Thank you. Thank you. That's Wisconsin
nice. Good morning, April. Are we all ready for the pantry? Yes. The tasks I do every day are
really marketing and volunteer focused. Checking email, posting social media, answering any phone
calls that come in and ensuring that we have enough volunteers for the day to work in the
team. I do. I always check emails, phone, any phone messages I had the night before.
And then I have to do my social media posts. And today we actually have an event we're doing
the pantry pickup. So I do have to do a post immediately. So I to upload our social media,
I use Hootsuite, but I pre-made a post. I just have to upload it and it's going out into the
social media world. And here's how I tell if it was posted. And so it is up. So I just made a
post for the pantry box pickup. The main reason why we, why I post this is because some of times
our guests forget that it's today. And we just want to remind them so that they do come in and
get their pantry boxes as much needed. The other goal is to make sure that the community is aware
that is a service that we offer once a month. So it's 10 a.m. We're doing a pantry today.
We have 15 people picking up. One person has already been here, which is great.
So my job is really to make sure that this goes smoothly today. I promoted it.
Hello. All right. You will have four boxes. So are you right there? Okay.
All righty. Thank you. So a big part of my day is working on a social media calendar.
I use Google calendars for it. And all I do is I schedule a post. The one I have next is the air
show, which is coming here in two weeks. We are selling tickets and we get proceeds from those
tickets. So yesterday I actually made the post in Canva. It lets you schedule Instagram and
Facebook just says last day to purchase tickets. I will schedule that one for,
oh, the 2nd of June. So I go here. You see all of our scheduled posts and there you go.
So now I'm doing a brainstorming session for our podcast, 10 questions at the table
with executive director TJ. So we started our podcast in February of this past year.
We thought it's a good way one to get the message out even further, but also to reach a new audience.
It really is a great platform for the younger generation that we have being in a college town
for them to listen to us and get involved and not just volunteering, but also to come down and get
meals too, if they need it. So I came up with some questions. How do they think hunger affects
the LGBTQ community? Yeah, that would be a good one to get to help us get that information.
So we can even know for ourselves too. And the last one, we always ask this at the end of our,
our regular podcast, what can we at the community table do better to help them?
Hello. So marketing for a nonprofit is quite different from a for-profit. One, we have
more regulation from the government and we have to watch what we post,
what we use in marketing. We can't do anything controversial or political. Also we have a
direct mission. We're not necessarily selling commerce. Yes, we do want some fundraising money
and donations. It's more important that we get the word out. So part of being a marketing
professional is to keep up with all the digital trends, especially in social media.
And I've been tasked with bringing in a younger demographic, especially for volunteering.
So there's no better way to bring in a younger group than to use TikTok. My colleague here,
Preston, definitely knows how to use TikTok. So I want him to show me some of the features
and why we would use it for the community table. I've heard that you can do like really silly,
funny, like put wigs and mustaches and hats and everything else on there. Do you know how to do
that as well? Yeah. All right. So here, Ron, we have different appearances and different effects.
So like this one, you have sunglasses that you have on and a purple mohawk. Yeah, that's for
my punk days. That's not a good one. So yeah, let's see. Oh, let's see what this one does.
So I just hit it, right? That's all I do. Yep. So that one changes your eyes and adds some
powder to your face. Some powder? Goodness. Yeah, just a little bit. Great. So are you going to help
me with this video we're doing? Yes, I can definitely help you with that. Sweet. All right. I'm looking
forward to it. We decided our first TikTok post was going to be a dance and it's going to be silly.
Okay. It's going to be lighthearted, but we hope it also sends a message that we are here for them.
I think that works. Yeah, it's not bad, honestly. So it's pretty much at the end of the day. I still
have a couple things I need to do. So all I do then is double check with TJ at the end of the
day to see if there's anything else I need to do. And then my day is done. Something I wish I would
have known about marketing before I entered the field would be education and training are not
everything. Yes, they're important. You definitely need to go to school and learn the basics of
marketing, but you really have to be creative and you have to think outside the box or you won't be
successful. And that's something they don't teach you. You really have to have it in you. Thanks
for watching. Give us a like and be sure to subscribe to Indeed's channel. See you next time.
Oh, wrong car. It's that car. Oops.
