Pinkbike videographers putting their lives on the line by going down the STEEPEST TRACK ever on E-bikes after the World Championship.
They got up the evening of the race and rode the track a few hours after all the pros finished, watch to see the carnage unfolds and riders getting humbled.
Oh the highline! Vera said come in, I did come in!
Oh my god!
Oh yeah, yeah you did catch me.
All right.
All right, Charlie here, we're with Calum this week.
Harry isn't here because the World Champs is a little bit different than World Cup.
We're gonna go down the Champery World Cup track.
Saying that I am terrified is probably an understatement.
We've seen the pros going down this week and it's pretty hectic.
I don't really know how we're gonna get down there.
It's a full commitment type track.
You know like those highlines are pretty pretty savage.
You can have a look at them but I'm not sure what's gonna happen really.
Probably not gonna do much for the highline.
Also worth noting, it is now about 7pm in Champery.
We have decided to do it tonight after filming the race all day
because it's supposed to rain and storm tomorrow.
And there's absolutely no way in hell I am riding Champery in the wet,
especially on a trail bike.
Obviously first lap and see if we actually make it down the track.
I am terrified.
Forgot to tie my shoes.
Nah, we're good.
All right.
The highline is kind of sketchy.
Okay, we're going.
I was chatting to Vera Whitman and Vera said if you take any highline you gotta commit.
All right, this is actually very steep.
And it's actually kind of dark.
I'm very very glad it is dry.
Holy s***.
Dude, I don't know.
Like, that line there is crazy.
That's f****** terrifying.
That is mental because there's no landing.
Nah, straight into a corner.
I don't even know if I really want to do the steps right there.
I think I've bottomed the bike out like three times already.
Do 50 meters, stop, do it again.
All right, I need to have a look but...
Yeah boy.
Okay, and now the steepest s*** section.
It's pretty chewed up after all the races have been down here today.
Yo, I didn't even notice that was the line.
Yeah, it's right there but it's so hauled out.
At the start of the week these ruts were not here.
Jesus Christ.
Yo.
Oh yeah, I did jump.
Look at that.
I'm gonna have to run in line.
Yeah, I'm absolutely not doing this.
It's like...
It's like three meters.
So narrow the takeoff is.
And they've got like three meters all the way there to land all the way there.
That is like insane.
Straight into another chute as well.
Like after this there's another chute.
Like, it's crazy.
Okay.
Slap the ruts.
Oh yes.
Okay, so this is a bit more bike parking.
It's just corners.
They're really steep and they really run it out.
So if you're gonna...
Oh, the high line.
Vera said come in.
I did come in.
Oh my god.
Oh, that was a good line.
Yeah boy.
I'm not bothering you.
Like, I feel like...
Are you bothering me?
Yeah, I don't think so.
Maybe I just don't have enough hair in my force.
Like...
Oh, I'm not glad you're not on the front.
Like, I'm just like...
Yeah, there's some big compressions.
Like, it's huge compressions.
Like, doing segments at one per time is one thing.
Doing a full run is a whole another story.
Rutt.
Okay, so those guys were gapping here.
Like, kind of all the way there.
And then getting in that...
Yo!
Oh, I dropped it, I dropped it.
Yes!
All right.
That high line is kind of doable but...
Like, you see this is like real slippery here.
Like, it's literally a full-on rut and you kind of got a gap.
Like, it's doable but it's full commit.
Like, you can't have the bike somewhat like this.
Like, it's going to be leaned in if you want to go hit that.
Yeah.
Otherwise, slide out.
I think on the...
Inside the tape, actually.
A video of a junior woman, I believe it is, that goes and slide completely out of it.
Yeah, she just clipped the front of it.
Yeah, I think she clipped the front and game over.
So, are you going to try that or are you doing a **** line?
I'll do a **** line.
Ninja Turtle, let's go!
Oh, even there, it's kind of...
That's definitely not the line.
And I'm definitely not jumping that.
It's like a nice bit of flowy track and you're like, yeah, I'll just add a couple of stairs.
Steep steps.
Oh, ****!
Bottom down again.
Okay, so...
All right.
Right, so this is one of the main sections that they were getting a lot of time.
Roden was even up here.
Yeah, so the issue with that is that you're going to get here, but you can't brake.
So you've got to gap the whole thing there.
Yeah, so see, Callum is sitting in the hump there and then his head is basically at this
like height of where they need to land.
So you're gapping there like a meter and a half or something onto the grass.
And then you kind of come here.
And then you kind of like...
Can't really see, but you gap from here to here and you're like full tilt.
It's like, I don't even really know how you make that corner there.
I don't know.
That's above my pay range.
The annoying thing is like when you actually watch them ride, like we filmed them, right?
And you watch them ride like, oh yeah, I reckon I could hit that.
And once you're actually on the bike, you're like, I couldn't hit that.
I'll go right and we'll see which one...
We'll see if I can catch you up.
Ready?
I don't know, dude.
I don't think I'm really ready.
All right.
Three, two, one.
So I'm going to go on a bend.
This is like...
Oh yeah.
Yeah, you did catch me.
And like gapping in there was some of the best.
Getting in the rut.
I'm disqualified after...
Getting in the rut.
And that's something I can do.
I can go in there and get in the corner.
Yeah!
Well, I disqualified myself.
You didn't disqualify.
No, disqualified.
I went off the tape.
Outside the tape.
That is seriously off camber and loose.
It is seriously off camber.
And some people did that inside line.
Yeah.
This is another section with a couple of lines.
Oh dude, I don't know.
What's the line here?
Wait, I'm going to...
Come back up.
Yeah.
So I think...
Don't you think just straight there?
What do you think?
Like literally just bang middle there.
Yeah.
And you go left of that pink rock.
Yeah, I think that's the safest bet.
And you don't have to turn that much.
You can just go over that crash.
I'm just going to take my time.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
All right, so straight in.
You ready?
Yeah, man.
You got it.
Oh, that is actually quite scary.
I'll say go straight.
Got it?
Yeah, boy.
All right, getting through wood.
It's actually quite dark.
I can't see sh**.
Okay, so I'm going to go outside line here.
Because it seems a bit safer.
I'm going to get into the woods.
Same thing, outside line.
Okay, I'm going to go back inside.
And they're like hitting that rock at the bottom there.
Yo, that rock at the bottom is pretty beat up.
I might clear that.
Or just...
I can't get the sh** out of that.
Them boys are going so fast through there.
And here, going in there.
And trapping that corner at the bottom.
Oh, yes.
That's one of the nicest booms on the track, I'd say.
You all right, Callum?
Yep.
All right, we're good.
So that's kind of weird.
Actually, probably a bit of a mistake.
It usually happens here.
All right.
Well, we've made it to the track.
Which I'm pretty happy about.
Because it seems like the sketchiest part of the course has probably gone.
But I do not speak too fast.
Don't want to speak too soon.
Do not speak too soon.
Because that's where Andy Colb, I think, blew out.
Just a little bit further down, possibly.
So I'm going to do the Andy Colb line, but really slowly.
Oh, but I think that we're jumping back on the grass.
That's insane.
Like, it's pulled in a way that you can't really jump.
Okay.
That's steep as sh**, bro.
Okay, so this corner...
Holy sh**.
It's the corner where Bruni actually crashed.
Which I understand better now.
Oh my god.
I'm glad I did my push-up.
Wow, that rut is quite something.
Quite something, that.
Oh my gosh.
Okay.
So greasy.
Even though it's been dry for three days, it's still super wet in here.
That's the high line.
But I'm going to stop because my hands hurt.
Dude, that last section.
There were some sketchy moments there.
Dude, I was like...
My a** is like on the tyre.
Brake pull to the very end of the bar.
And like, I've just...
And my hands are like hurting because I'm like so deep into the handlebar.
Yeah.
And that is the wettest part of the track.
I'm probably one of the steepest as well.
Yeah, because it's like...
It's still... It's all in the shade.
So as soon as we go into that forest bit there,
like literally, vision went down like three points.
Yeah.
It was like real... Yeah.
It's sketchy, yeah.
Is that high line actually not doable?
I think you need to be going warp speed to get onto it.
It's like not doable from here.
I'm kind of tempted.
Can you like just ride it like that?
Well, that was somewhat predictable.
Yeah.
Somewhat predictable outcome there.
There we go.
All right.
I'm a sucker for an inside line.
So I'm going to go inside.
It's hot.
Oh, f**k, ow.
A bit of a spike there.
It's actually doable, I think.
I need a bit of...
Oh, right.
It's the catch net.
And here we are.
That's top to bottom.
Champeree.
And he's in the hot seat.
Yeah.
Yeah, bro.
Sick.
All right.
So we finished the World Cup track on e-bikes.
Saying that it was hard is an understatement.
I mean, we went down on the brakes the whole time
and didn't do any of the big features
The thing is, like, if you hit those big features behind,
you're at so much speed, like,
I actually don't think a trail bike can hold it.
Yeah.
Like, you know, regardless of who you are, I think,
I mean, I'm sure the pro is good.
But, like, you hit it, you brake,
and it's like, just everything goes down the bottom.
You've got no travel left.
The corners are so tight and the g-force in them is, like,
actually ridiculous.
If you get those high lines,
you're going to be hitting those corners and just, like,
so much g-force.
Really just, like, compression into compression into corner.
So you get into the corner, you're already compressed
and, like, beat up.
So it's really hard.
Like, honestly, props to all the downhill riders.
I don't really know how you get down there
by doing all the gaps and going warp speed.
Some of those inside lines are insane.
So props to you guys.
Look, we have a week off and then it's Lanza Haida.
So we'll see you in Lanza Haida for another track preview.
And I think Harry will be back this time.
So maybe there'll be a little bit more crashing.
All right, see you guys later.
Peace.
