I wouldn't say I'm at the top. I think I'm on the way, but I wouldn't say I'm there yet.
Still a lot to do, but it starts in places like this. You get given the confidence, you
get given the idea of just playing with freedom and fun, and you never know what can happen.
You don't go into sessions with the kids here thinking that all of them are going to be
stars for England or Real Madrid or whatever, but you just want them to have a good time
and if that's something that they want to pursue, then they can always remember that
they had the chance here at McDonald's.
And getting adapted to life abroad. Maybe you don't travel as well as Brits, but you seem to.
Yeah, that's the rumour, isn't it, that Brits don't travel well abroad, but I did three
years in Germany, learnt a lot about that culture, learnt a lot about myself and little
things when it comes to football and personal life as well. Obviously now in Spain, learning
so much and really loving life in Madrid. Even outside football, I think the people
in Spain are great. They're so emotional. They really take you in when you go out and
they want you to feel a part of their city and their culture and I definitely feel like that.
Do you sort of feel like you're living the dream?
Yeah, I do feel like that sometimes. I wake up and I have to pinch myself when I'm playing
for England at Wembley or playing at the Bernabeu for Real Madrid. It's something that I could
never have dreamed of happening this early, but I'm grateful to everyone who's played
a part in my journey to get me here.
And given what you've already achieved, obviously on the way to Troopers as well this season,
what advice can you then give to someone who's looking to emulate you?
At this level of football, when I speak to these kids and they ask me about it, I just
try and tell them to enjoy it. I think that's the most important thing. Come and play with
a smile on your face, enjoy interacting with the other kids and try not to take it too
seriously. Let that come a little bit later on when you get older if you decide to pursue
it, but for now just enjoy it. Keep smiling.
Who are the players you looked up to when you were growing up?
I think the English ones was always Rooney and Gerrard. I think I love the way they played.
I love how they played, kind of on the edge and so aggressive but so skilful as well.
So I'd say them two.
Because you look to them in terms of longevity as well. I mean, the fact that you've already
been to a World Cup and you could be going to them for, I think it was, hopefully like
20, 30, 80 even beyond that.
Yeah, I'm just focused on the next one. But yeah, there is a possibility of that, you
know, if I keep myself in good condition and things like that. I think with Rooney, it's
so impressive. He started at like 16, like myself. And yeah, sometimes you do forget
how young you are in this kind of industry because things go by so fast and you get so
many opportunities that you're kind of forced to grow up. But no, I definitely still feel
like a normal kid.
You know, if there's one thing when people are sort of watching you that you want them
to sort of take away is they're sort of watching you playing football. So much is expected
of you now because you get used to sort of seeing last minute winners, goals all the
time that we get accustomed to you being the match winner.
Yeah, well, I think that's my job. I try and go out on the pitch and do my job and help
my team win football games. People kind of like the style in which I play. I think the
way I move and that kind of thing and the way I move with the ball. And it's really
nice. I try to relate to the fans while I'm playing as well. I want the fans to feel like
I'm another fan playing and representing them because that's what it's all about at the
end of the day. And yeah, if they can see me and see someone that they can relate to
and support, then it's going to help the support of the team as well. Their support means a
lot to us, more than they probably believe. So when the country's positive and when the
fans are positive, the team will play better.
