In the central nave of the cathedral rich in architectural and sculptural detail is displayed
standing in stone and wood through the centuries the main chapel a sacred space lies
filled with light and color where the bishop his chapter and the
Christian people solemnly celebrate the mysteries of the faith
The central nave is where the entire church resides the church that sleeps that
He has died lying on the ground in the tombs none of which remain today in the cathedral of Burgos
because the floor was replaced in the 19th century with the current one
This central nave spans three levels with the lowest one showcasing the columns' beams
and the earlier arches providing access to the side aisles which date back to the sixteenth century
The nave and the choir are interrupted by gates reducing the transparency and spaciousness
On the middle level is the elegant
triforium a gallery that runs along the perimeter of the nave and transept
Their arches are supported by slender columns and their voussoirs are adorned w
eads of kings nobles commoners or grotesque beings with double faces and animal features
symbolizing believers with the church's virtues flaws and sins as it
journeys and is purified
And at the upper level is the clerestory featuring double-arched
windows and colorful stained glass depicting the mystery of Christ
The ship is covered with stone tracery supported
by pointed arches ribbed vaults and transverse ribs
The lantern and adjacent vaults feature groined ribs with curved ribs
In this part of the ship the main altarpiece protrudes one of the great masterpieces of the Renaissance
Spanish Mannerist masterpiece of great beauty and polychromy
built between 1562 and 1580 and later painted in vibrant colors
The architectural and sculptural work was planned and directed by the brothers Rodrigo
and Martín de la Haya in collaboration with other artists
such as Juan de Anchieta and Domingo de Berriz
In the polychromy painters such as Gregorio Martínez and Diego de Urbina worked
The architectural composition of the altarpiece employs the three classical orders: Doric
Ionic and Corinthian divided into three streets and four intercolumniations separated
In turn four bodies on the streets and three in the alleys
It is primarily dedicated to the Virgin and emphasizes the Eucharist and the liturgical calendar
At the center of the first body is the Tabernacle adorned with
reliefs depicting the Eucharist created by Domingo de Berriz
And thus the Tabernacle is reaffirming the doctrine of Christ's real presence
Christ made into bread for the nourishment of humanity and thus He is present in all the symbolism of
Old Testament which already speaks precisely about that—bread of life
In the second body is the image of Santa María la Mayor the city's patron saint
Burgos Cathedral a magnificent example of 15th-century plateresque architecture funded by Bishop Luis de Acuña
Then the altarpiece is dedicated to the Virgin something that
Protestants also denied—the Virgin's virginity her motherhood and so on
And right in the center of the altarpiece is Santa María la Mayor a statue depicting her
silver weighing about 70 kilograms the silver
produced in the silver mine of my hometown Arlanzón
There was a silver mine there that Alfonso VIII granted to the Camino while he was in Coria
From the Cathedral of Burgos so that all the silver you take shall be used for divine worship
In the third and fourth sections are two groups carved by Juan de Anchieta
There is the Assumption and the Coronation then
of course naturally the entire mystery of the Virgin
On the left side street from top to bottom are the reliefs of Saint Anne and the Virgin
and the child and the embrace of Joaquín and Ana before the golden door of the temple the bir
e Virgin and her presentation in the temple
On the right side also from top to bottom Saint Elizabeth appears with her child
Juan and the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus
Follows the Annunciation by the Angel Gabriel the Visitation of the Virgin to her cousin Elizabeth
and the presentation of the Child Jesus in the temple
As is also the case at the moment we mentioned regarding the Council of Trent the mystery
from the church among the twelve apostles located between the columns
And at the culmination of the intercolumniations are the
evangelists the guardian archangels and the crucifixion or Calvary
This main place of worship of Castilian origin is now used only for celebrations
solemnly with the chapels of Santa Tecla and Santo Cristo used for regular worship
