This is a song which I'd love you to sing along with.
It's because it's a kind of to and fro.
It's not a song as a whole song.
It's really one of those ones that is a reminiscence
that we just pour out this melody, this little verse,
and you sing a bit, and then I'll sing a bit,
and then you sing a bit.
We just kind of go backwards and forwards.
It's best done imagining you're kind of leaning on a bar
with a glass of whiskey,
or you're sitting on the shore of some beautiful place
that you've been to many times in your life
and are very connected to.
It's that sort of a journey.
And it comes from a wonderful woman called Nan Connors
who I really adore spending time with.
Brought her over to London once even to sing and step dance.
Even though she was in her early 80s,
she would still get up and dance.
She had this, and she kind of didn't really know what it was.
She just kind of came out with these verses.
We call it Banner's Lonely Shore or Sweet Girl Macree.
It's also one of those songs that has never been recorded before,
so you are some of the first people to ever get to sing it.
So it's a real joy taking a song like this
and kind of piecing it together and giving it new life.
So here goes.
I'm going to teach you your part.
We'll do it just line by line and then give it a go.
So it goes like this.
Oh, sweet girl Macree
It's great.
I would love to be
Down on Banner's Lonely Shore
Should we do that all together?
Oh, sweet girl Macree
I would love to be
Down on Banner's Lonely Shore
To watch those small boats sailing
As they come in
But oh, sweet girl Macree
I would love to be
Down on Banner's Lonely Shore
And all the village on Sunday Hill
All those days are gone
Sure we'd watch those small boats sailing
As they come in the shore
But oh, sweet girl Macree
I would love to be
Down on Banner's Lonely Shore
And all those good old friends I used to know
All those days are gone
Sure we'd watch those ships when sailing
We'd watch them from on the shore
But oh, sweet girl Macree
I would love to be
Down on Banner's Lonely Shore
And all those birds that fly in the sky
Yes, we'd know
They'd fly off the ships when sailing
Sure they'd leave them the shore
But oh, sweet girl Macree
I would love to be
Down on Banner's Lonely Shore
And oh, sweet girl Macree
I would love to be
Down on Banner's Lonely Shore
As they come in
But oh, sweet girl
I would love to be
Sweet girl Macree
I would love to be
Down on Banner's
But oh, sweet girl Macree
I would love to be
