Namaskar. You know, the most mystical phase of life begins much before birth.
It begins inside the womb and that is exactly what the Garbha Sanskar is about.
This is an ancient Indian understanding that a mother's thoughts, food, emotions, sounds,
surroundings and values reach the child right in the womb.
There is no one specific thing for Garbha Sanskar.
It is about incorporating a balanced approach in your lifestyle.
So today let's talk about Garbha Sanskar in a simple and practical way.
Garbha Sanskar is about the impression your baby receives even before birth.
Our texts from Charaka Samhita through the stories mentioned in the Mahabharata
tell us that the baby is not just growing physically, the little one is absorbing
the mother's emotional state and habits, her joys, her fears, everything.
And now science also confirms this. We call it fetal programming.
There is a field of science called epigenetics. It has shown that the mother's lifestyle
can influence how baby's genes express themselves.
So our ancient practices and modern findings say the same thing.
You see, baby's nervous system starts forming very early.
The tiny heart reacts to the mother's stress levels.
The baby recognizes her voice, responds to her mood and even shows movement
when he listens to the soothing sound.
So when the mother feels peaceful, the baby receives that peace.
When she is nourishing food, the baby receives strength.
When she surrounds herself with positive energy, the baby feels that safety.
Many expecting mothers ask me, what exactly should I do every day?
And this is where the five practical pillars of Garba Sanskars come in.
Nothing complicated, just simple habits that nourish mother together with baby.
The first pillar is about the food. The body becomes far more sensitive during pregnancy.
So the food has to be warm, gentle and fresh.
A simple home cooked meal works far better than anything heavy or complicated.
Take soft dal, lightly spiced sabji, rice, khichdi, curd during the main meals.
Put a little ghee on your roti. These are the kind of food that keep mother strong
without making her feel sluggish. Eat fruits like banana and pomegranate,
soaked almonds and raisins. Take milk with saffron or turmeric at night, if it suits you.
And simple homemade ladoos with gond, ragi or besan.
This can make you strong when you take them in small amount.
The idea is to keep digestion happy.
And one thing I always remind to expecting mothers that you listen to your digestion.
Your body knows exactly how much to take in.
The second pillar is staying away from negativity, both inside and outside.
And this is so important because whatever pulls your mind down also reaches your baby.
Sometimes negativity comes from people around us,
sometimes from news, sometimes from our own thinking.
So whenever you notice the negative thought rising, gently replace it with the positive one.
This is what Maharishi Patanjali calls it as Pratipaksha Bhavna.
It's about shifting your mind in a positive direction.
Simple affirmation works beautifully here.
Say something like my baby is safe, I am calm, we are protected.
Three times every day.
And when you sense that a person is draining your energy, it's alright to step away politely.
You don't have to explain anything, just protect your mental space.
The third pillar is emotional regulation.
Pregnancy brings natural hormonal changes and because of that mood swings do happen.
There's nothing wrong with that.
The only thing you must remember is that intense emotional outburst
creates sudden waves of stress inside your body and those waves reach your baby.
So learn to recognize such emotions early.
Almost the moment it starts rising, a slow walk can help release it.
A few minutes of simple breath observation calms the mind quickly.
Writing down the feelings also works for many women and creating a personal method.
Whether it is talking to a trusted person,
flashing cold water on the face or just sitting quiet for a minute
gives you a way to respond without letting the emotions take over.
The more aware you are of what you are feeling, the easier it becomes to maintain steadiness.
Another good way to keep your emotions under control
is to cultivate a hobby such as singing or gardening.
Such hobbies are quite absorbing and they keep your mind clear.
The fourth pillar is yoga.
Your body needs movement but it must be gentle and also suitable for pregnancy.
A little spinal stretching, some hip openers like Yogendra Matsyasana,
Yogendra Marjari Asana, Vittilasana for spinal strength should be done slowly with steady breath.
Do these asanas twice a day but remember no pushing, no straining.
And when it comes to pranayama, few techniques help a lot.
Five rounds of Brahmari or Anulom Vilom are excellent for calming your nervous system.
What is important is not intensity but consistency.
It is best to learn these things from someone trained in prenatal yoga
because there are special techniques for each trimester.
And the fifth pillar is reading and listening to good literature.
What you absorb through words and sounds also reaches the baby.
So always choose books that are uplifting like scriptures from your own faith, value-based
or any text that provides mental strength.
Even listening to soothing music or satsang creates a nurturing sound in the environment.
For the womb, stay away from anything that is filled with criticism or harsh judgment.
Listening to soothing mantras and spending time with people
who make the mother feel safe, that is important.
These things may look small but they make the mother feel very comfortable and relaxed.
Many mothers tell me that their babies react gently when they hear familiar chants after birth.
This is because the vibrations settle deep within.
So these five pillars, nourishing food, staying away from negativity,
emotional steadiness, gentle yoga and uplifting reading create a complete environment of care,
not just for mothers but for babies who is silently absorbing every moment.
Let's not forget something very important here.
Garbha Sanskar is not only the mother's responsibility,
the father's influence is also very powerful.
His voice, his presence, his patience, all of these reach the baby.
The atmosphere at home becomes the first environment that your child knows.
When a mother feels supportive, the baby receives that support as well.
So Garbha Sanskar is not about pampering mother,
it is about honoring a sacred responsibility of creating life.
Every thought becomes nourishment, every action becomes a message
and every movement becomes a memory.
Namaskar
