Sometimes overshadowed by the more familiar Fifth and Seventh Symphonies, the Sixth nevertheless contains many absolutely extraordinary passages, including the astonishing Scherzo and the monumental Adagio. Bruckner explores new territory: his sinuous harmonies, complex rhythms, and imaginative instrumentation encounter contrasting atmospheres and a theme that pleasantly evolves from darkness toward light. Built entirely on the proportions of the golden ratio and on the tonal and structural consequences of the Phrygian mode of its opening theme, it cements its unity through a few motivic cells in a constant process of biological mutation.

Its first movement presents very difficult interpretive challenges concerning the choice and balance of tempi, and this applies equally to the Finale — often considered inferior to the other movements, whereas a good performance proves quite the opposite. During Bruckner’s lifetime, only the two middle movements were performed: the Adagio, more intimate in expression than those of the other symphonies yet unfolding into a radiant lyrical conclusion, and the Scherzo, whose fairy-like and fantastic atmosphere has no equivalent.

Bruckner composed the Sixth between 1879 and 1881 and never touched it again, so that only a single authentic version exists! Its premiere was, however, posthumous: Mahler conducted it in 1899 in Vienna. Bruckner called it “the sauciest,” and it is sometimes referred to as the Cinderella of the symphonies, since it is only rarely performed in concert.
