Today, we're talking about three eating tricks to lower blood pressure naturally without
counting calories, dieting, or giving up your favorite foods.
Most people think in order to lower blood pressure naturally, you have to completely
cut out salt, give up the foods you really enjoy, or follow a strict heart diet.
But the truth is, when it comes to lowering blood pressure, how you eat matters just as
much as what you eat.
And out of the three eating tricks that I'm showing you today, the third one is the most
powerful of all, as it can actually lower blood pressure in just minutes.
By the way, I'm Dr. Mitch Rice, a board-certified family medicine physician, also known as the
Blood Pressure Doc, and helping people lower blood pressure naturally is what I do every
single day.
Now, the first eating trick sets the foundation for everything else that we talk about in
this video, and that is to start each meal with potassium.
Most people with high blood pressure stress over salt, and I don't blame them.
That's something that we've been taught and used to tell patients all the time.
But the thing is, high blood pressure is actually a salt to potassium ratio issue.
Sodium will tighten your arteries and potassium will relax them.
Now, your body needs both of these essential nutrients, but the problem is people generally
get too much salt and not enough potassium.
Now, here's the part about potassium that almost no one knows.
Potassium will work even more effectively if you eat it first with every single meal.
When potassium hits your system early in a meal, your kidneys are better able to handle
the sodium load, excess sodium is flushed out more efficiently, blood vessels relax
sooner, and blood pressure spikes after meals are typically smaller.
Think of potassium like the preloading protection for your arteries.
Instead of waiting for pressures to rise and reacting later, your body is already set up
to stay calmer.
This eating trick is especially important if you notice your blood pressure creeping
up after meals, or if your readings tend to be higher in the afternoons and evenings.
Before the main part of your meal, eat one potassium-rich food.
This could be bananas, beans or lentils, an avocado, sweet potatoes, yogurt, or salmon.
You don't need a huge portion, even 10 bites is enough to get the benefit.
You don't need to change your whole meal and you don't need to eat perfectly.
Just lead with potassium, then eat the rest of your meal normally.
Many of my own patients see about a 5 to 8 point drop in systolic blood pressure just
by implementing this one eating trick alone and not really changing anything else.
Now, leading with potassium is essential, but if you're not doing this second trick,
your blood pressure may not drop as much as you'd like it to.
Trick number two is especially important if you're over the age of 60 and it's to never
eat carbs alone.
Now let me explain.
When you eat carbs by themselves, think bread, pasta, rice, crackers, or sweet tea, your
blood sugar rises quickly.
This quick rise sets off a chain reaction in the body.
Your insulin goes up, adrenaline goes up, and the blood vessels tighten.
All of these things together raises blood pressure, even if the food itself is relatively
healthy.
This is one of the most common reasons people say, I eat pretty well, but my blood pressure
still runs high.
It's not always what they're eating, it's how they're eating it.
Now the main trick of never eating carbs alone means never eat your carbs without protein
or fat.
If you truly want to optimize this trick even more, you want to eat about half of your total
amount of protein every meal before you even touch your carbs at all.
Protein and fat help slow digestion, which prevents sharp blood sugar spikes, it reduces
adrenaline release, keeps your nervous system calmer, and it helps your blood pressure stay
steadier after meals.
Again, this is especially important for adults over 60 because insulin sensitivity naturally
declines with age.
For example, instead of eating toast alone, which can cause a blood pressure spike, you
want to eat toast with eggs.
This creates a more stable blood pressure.
Instead of eating pasta alone, you want to have pasta with chicken.
Instead of drinking sweet tea by itself, you want to drink sweet tea with a balanced meal,
which creates less of a blood sugar spike.
And honestly, my opinion is to ditch the sweet tea in general, but that's easier said than
done.
This matters most at breakfast and lunch to a little bit of a lesser degree, as these
are the times of the day when blood pressure naturally wants to rise, especially systolic
pressure.
Now this next eating trick is the most powerful eating trick in this entire video, and it
can actually lower your blood pressure in just minutes.
Trick number three is also extremely simple, and that is to slow down when you eat.
Now I know this sounds a little bit crazy, but you got to try it for yourself.
Blood pressure is not just controlled by food alone.
It's also controlled by the nervous system, and your nervous system decides whether a
meal feels stressful or calming.
What most people do when they eat is they sit down all in a rush and they try to eat
as quickly as they can.
Maybe they're watching the news, which is stressful in and of itself, or scrolling on
their phone.
And all of these things send a clear signal to the body, which is to stay in that flight
or fight response, which causes a sympathetic overdrive.
This keeps your heart rate elevated, blood vessels stay tight, and blood pressure stays
higher than it needs to be.
So here's what you can do instead.
For the first five minutes of every meal, sit down and put your phone away.
Take slower bites and chew your food 10 to 15 times before swallowing.
Breathe through your nose, obviously not while chewing so you don't choke.
And honestly, that's it.
These small changes flip your body into that rest and digest mode.
This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is your body's brake pedal.
Many people see immediate blood pressure drops just from this one change alone.
Think of it like telling your arteries, you're safe now.
It's okay to finally relax.
And when you repeat this meal after meal, day after day, those calming habits start
to stick.
So here's how to put everything we talked about today together without significantly
changing your diet.
First you want to start with potassium, a few bites of beans, yogurt, or avocado.
You want to pair the carbs with protein or fat and never eat your carbs alone.
In fact, to get the biggest bang for your buck, you should try to eat 50% of all of
your protein on the plate before you touch your carbs.
And thirdly, you want to slow down in the first five minutes that you're eating.
No rushing, no scrolling, no watching the news.
And that's it.
There's no calorie counting, no strict food rules, and no cutting out the foods that you
love.
It's just adding a smarter structure to your meals.
One final note is these tricks work especially well if you're over the age of 60.
If you already have high blood pressure, if you notice blood pressure spikes after meals,
and if you want to avoid adding more medications.
These eating tricks can also help reduce dizziness after meals, can help fix energy crashes,
and help control those afternoon and evening blood pressure surges.
I guarantee that if you do these three eating tricks daily, meal after meal for about 30
days, your numbers will go down.
