Hey guys, welcome to my channel it is me lena
And today i'm going to do the first video in my learn to braid with lena series
So today we're going to start off real simple and we're going to go back to the basics
And i'm just going to be showing you how to do a basic cornrow with natural hair
I'm, not going to add any um weave into the braid. I'll save that for the next video. So
Let's jump right into it
So first of all, you want to start with a
good parting comb either you can use the pin tail end or you can use a
Parting comb, which is my perfect parting cones, which has a very poignant tip on there
And it gives you a really um sharp part. So it's just preference which end that you want to use
Whichever one gives you a good
Crispy part is fine. So
I'm just going to start i'm going to start pretty much like in the middle. That way it's easier to see
So i'm just going to part the hair
And I use the pin tail in a lot more than I use the tip
Uh, just because uh, just preference basically
I mean either it's fine. So you want to make sure you have some clips because you definitely want to clip
the straight hair out the way
Because that makes it easier
For you to do your braid
so mannequin head is not the best with getting a straight part, but
Using this comb you want to lay it down and you'll take it right down
The scalp that way and it'll give you a really straight part in a real person's ear
So i'm just going to
Clip that out the way
And another way to get a good crispy part
I do have a couple videos on parting and you just take the jam and lay it down the part you go right back over it
And that will give you a really clean part
So i'll post the link to my parting videos
In the description so i'm just going to make this one a little bit bigger so it's easier to see
And i'm going to stop it here for
Camera purposes
Okay, so I have my part
Parted out
Put all the extra hair out the way
That way you're not grabbing it while you're braiding
And another thing that makes it easier is to take a little jam
And just rub it on the hair
To smooth it to keep the frays and flyaways
Lay it down
And so when you start a cornrow
You want to start off with
Three pieces of hair
And you don't want to take a big chunk like that because then your braid will start low it'll like lag
So you want to go closer to the top?
And grab three smaller pieces
So i'll just it doesn't have to be perfect and i don't see that so just like part a little skinny piece across the top
And then you're going to split it into three
So I have three pieces right here and this is how i'm going to start my braid
so
I am going to it doesn't matter if you start with your right hand or your left hand
But you're going to want to be using three fingers. Basically. You basically just need three
So i'm holding this one with my three fingers
And I got this one with my three fingers
But I want to keep my pointer finger
Slightly mobile because that's what i'm going to be using
so
Once you're holding it. You got a good grip with your three fingers
You want to go under the middle piece with your pointer finger and grab the side piece
So every time you reach
With your pointer finger to grab you want to grab a little bit more hair
So now i'm back to my three fingers
But i'm going to hold it with my middle and thumb so I can go under with my pointer finger
And grab the other piece and like I said every time you reach
Under with your pointer finger to grab you want to grab a little bit more hair on the side
so three finger grip
And then I let go of my pointer so I can have it to reach under
And grabbing a little bit more hair every time
So three finger grip and go under with your pointer and grab a little more hair
Three fingers
Go under with your pointer
And grab a little bit more hair off to the side
So you have to keep get a routine going in your head so you can remember what to do. So three finger grip
Then under with your pointer
Grab more hair
Like it's easy to remember stuff if you like make a song or rhyme under out of it or something
Like how you teach your kids how to spell an A
So we're gonna do like three finger grip
Under with your pointer grab more hair
three finger grip
Under with your pointer grab more hair. So whatever you gotta do to remember the rotation
Is you know come up with something catchy for yourself. Grab a little more hair
three finger grip
Go under with your pointer grab more hair
And this is how you achieve a basic corn row
Really neat and simple and make sure
You when you grab more hair that you're grabbing
About the same amount of hair each time
That way your braid stays even and consistent because if you grab bigger pieces and then smaller pieces
You'll have a lumpy braid and we don't want that. So
Three finger grip
And you don't have to pull and yank on someone's hair to get the braid
To look neat so three finger grip
But then let your pointer go so you can grab under with your pointer
Grab more hair
Three fingers to grip it
Then use your pointer finger to go under
And grab more hair
And you just keep repeating the process
Until you get to the bottom
And i'm at the end
So i'm braiding it down and make sure when you grab hair that you're grabbing it from straight across
Not pull it up or pull it up this way because then you'll have a braid that doesn't lay flat
And it's uneven. So make sure when you grab more hair that you're pulling from straight across
And not pulling up or down
Okay, so now that I got to the end because I stopped it right there
I'm going to flip my fingers over
to braid down
Now this is a little hard for some people this how I was going down at first, but then I flip it over
To put thumbs on top
So this is the hardest part to teach somebody when braiding natural hair that I see in my classes a lot
So i'm still using basically my three fingers if I have my thumbs on top
So I take my pointer finger and push the middle piece up and I use my middle finger to grab it
So thumb on top
and I have
these three fingers
See so my thumb is on top
And I use my pointer finger to push the middle piece up and my middle finger
To grab it
This one is a little bit more confusing
Okay, so you just watch
Push it up with my pointer
And i'm wrapping this around my pointer and grabbing it with my middle finger
Back to my thumb on top
And I like to do it this way because it keeps my hair smooth because I can just use my thumb and fingers to smooth it
down
So push it up with pointer
Wrap it grab it with the middle finger
Push it up with my pointer wrap
Grab it with my middle finger
Push it up pointer
Wrap it around the pointer finger and grab it
with your middle
And I know this is like a little bit easier said than done because so it takes a little practice
But once you get it, you got it because it's repetitive
So push it up with your pointer wrap and grab that piece back there with your middle finger
Push it up wrap
Grab it with your middle
Push it up wrap grab it with your middle
And you just keep
That same process going
Until you get to the bottom of the braid
So this is my finished corn row
This is my finished braid
Okay, thank you guys for watching my first learn to braid with lena video
