Tonight, polar punch. The worst of winter invades the northeast. The Arctic
cold, extreme and life threatening Lake Erie, nearly frozen solid for the first
time in decades. I'm here. I'll just grant Gilmore 80 million americans
underneath cold weather alerts tonight. What to know about the danger and
possible relief. Also tonight, suspected kidnapping the latest in the
search for Nancy Guthrie. I'm Andres Gutierrez in Tucson Arizona. Tonight
marks one week since Savannah's Guthrie 84 year old mother was last
seen. The sheriff admitting missteps apology. President Trump shifts blame
for racist video of the Obamas. I didn't think it was staying. I'm Willie James
in west Palm Beach florida. President trump claims he's the least racist
president amid the fallout over an offensive video. New Epstein backlash.
Britain's prime minister now in peril, first medals and practice runs as
competition begins at the Winter Olympics. I'm set stone in Cortina
where the Winter Olympics are officially underway. All that plus
Super Bowl 60 big game, bigger business. I don't think you can have a Super Bowl
without the Budweiser Clydesdales. This is the CBS weekend news from New York
with Jerrica Duncan. Good evening everyone and thank you for joining us.
We begin with breaking news in Tucson Arizona. There's a new video tonight
from the Guthrie family. Tonight marks one week since their mother Nancy
Guthrie was last seen before her suspected kidnapping. CBS is Andres
Gutierrez is outside the Guthrie home with the very latest on what's in that
video. Andres Jerrica Nancy Guthrie's Children once again took to social
media this time in a 22 2nd clip to address those responsible for taking
their mother. This has two law enforcement sources tell CBS News that
the investigators out here are developing good information but that
quote nothing is imminent. We beg you now to return our mother to us so that
we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace and
emotional please saturday evening from Savannah Guthrie and her siblings to get
their beloved mother back. This is very valuable to us and we will pay FBI
agents were back at Nancy Guthrie's home late friday to remove a camera
from her roof and tow her car from her garage to examine it for possible
fingerprints or other clues. Authorities haven't said why they
returned to the 84 year old's home but it happened hours after investigators
announced they're working to verify what appears to be a second message
from her alleged captors. I know there's some frustrations and we cannot
provide every bit of information that they receive until they get to a closer
place of identifying where his country is and the people that might have taken
her. CBS News has learned law enforcement is tracking down vehicles
captured on surveillance cameras the night she disappeared. Pima County
Sheriff Chris Nanos now says he would have called in other agencies including
the FBI sooner and kept crime scene tape up longer after reporters later
found her blood near the front door. The crime scene being released early is
concerning. I want to believe that now that they're taking a close look at all
the evidence, all the information, anything that comes into their
possession, they're taking a closer look at knowing that this case is going on
longer than they probably anticipated. The sheriff didn't hold a news
conference today but reiterated they still don't have a suspect or person of
interest in this case just yet. Jerica Andres Gutierrez with that new
information tonight. Thank you to the weather now tonight. Millions of
americans from the Great Lakes to the northeast are experiencing a new blast
of extreme cold. This is Gloucester massachusetts where the snow is flying
and piling up fast. The freezing wind making it feel like 12 below and this
is Lake Erie now nearly frozen solid for the first time in two decades. CBS
News meteorologist Grant Gilmore is tracking it off for us this evening.
Grant. Hey there Jerica. This evening winter is bringing the most brutal
blast of arctic air to many across the mid atlantic and northeast as we go
into tonight. Just bitterly cold air has already been moving in and will
continue to move in as we go into the overnight hours. We've got 80 million
people underneath cold weather alerts tonight because of wind chill values
down to nearly 35 degrees below zero. All because of these howling winds
that have been between 50 to 60 MPH even at times gusting up to 70 MPH
which has taken out power and compounding the danger of this cold.
It's remarkable to see these frigid temperatures in contrast to this warmer
than normal temperatures across the central and western United States where
temperatures are running 20 to 30 degrees above average. Now in the
northeast tonight, low temperatures are going to drop down to the single
digits to below zero feels like temperatures 30 degrees below zero and
then in the northeast tomorrow we'll see highs in the single digits feels
like temperatures in the sub zero range and then by monday morning still
dangerously cold before warming back a little bit with some relief in sight as
we go into the beginning of next week. Meanwhile in California for the big
game tomorrow between the Seahawks and the Patriots, we'll see partly sunny
skies with highs in the mid sixties. Jerica not looking too bad grant
Gilmore. Thank you. Now to the latest fallout after President trump shared a
racist video on his social media platform. The president who spoke about
his latest actions last night refused to apologize despite sparking
widespread outrage and condemnation. CBS is Willie James and men reports
tonight from West Palm Beach florida near the president's home Willie James
drink a good evening to you. Republican lawmakers offered a rare rebuke of
President trump after he reposted a racist meme of President Obama and
Michelle Obama depicted as apes. No, I didn't make a mistake aboard Air Force
one. The president says he won't apologize for posting a video which
included racist imagery of the former president and first lady. I didn't see
the whole thing. I am by the way, the least racist president you've had in a
long time. Initially the White House defended the president's post but later
backtracked, deleting it 12 hours later, blaming the post on an unnamed
staffer. Lawmaker condemnation was swift and bipartisan. He should
apologize and perhaps most importantly, he should pledge to do better. The G.
O. P. S. Only black Republican Senator Tim scott of South Carolina called the
post the most racist thing I've seen out of this White House. The president
also under fire this weekend for freezing funding to one of the nation's
largest infrastructure projects. Late friday, a federal judge ruling the trump
administration must temporarily unfreeze $16 billion in funding for the
Gateway Tunnel project linking New York and New Jersey by rail. According to
multiple reports, the trump administration told Senate Minority
Leader Chuck Schumer the funds would be released if Penn Station in New York
City and Dulles Airport in Virginia were named after President trump. The
president claims the idea wasn't his. He suggested that to me. Chuck Schumer
suggested that to me about changing the name of head station to trump station.
Dulles Airport is really separate.
Leader Schumer called the president's statement an absolute lie. Meanwhile,
nearly 1000 construction jobs are on the line as work stopped at the site on
friday amid the ongoing battle over funding. Jerica Willie James M and
reporting from West Palm Beach tonight. Thank you. Today marks one month since
the killing of Renee Good by an ice agent in Minneapolis. Hundreds gathered
in the city for a public memorial honoring good as well as I see you
nurse Alex Pretty who was killed two weeks ago today and an update on five
year old Liam Ramos, the boy behind this image that rocketed around the
world just days after he and his father were released from a texas detention
center. The trump administration is escalating efforts to deport them
tonight. A new wave of backlash after the massive final dump of Epstein files.
Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer is the latest to face criticism. CBS is
MTS tire that our London Bureau has new details and what is now a global
scandal. Good evening. While the political fallout here in Britain
following the latest Epstein documents release has become so intense, there
are growing calls for the UK's prime minister to step down at the center of
the scandal. Is this man Peter Mandelson, a former senior power
broker for the governing British Labour Party and an ex ambassador to the U. S.
My mother would be proud. Mandelson is now under criminal investigation for
his ties to convicted sex offender and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
This week, British police searched two properties linked to him searching for
evidence that he improperly shared confidential government and financial
information with Epstein while holding public office. If proven, he could face
jail time. In the wake of the scandal, Mandelson resigned this week from the
House of Lords and quit the Labour Party. The follow it is now directly
threatening the prime minister. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has admitted to
Parliament he knew of Mandelson's past association with Epstein, but that he
had not been told the truth about the extent of the relationship. He lied, he
lied and he lied again to my team. The admission has sparked a furious
backlash, including from members of Starmer's own party who are openly
questioning his judgment and his leadership connections to Epstein
hasn't spared Britain's royal family either. Andrew has been stripped of his
royal titles and duties over his association with Epstein and political
analysts here describe this as a once in a generation crisis that has exposed
the deeply questionable dealings of the privileged elite. Jerica could now bring
down a sitting prime minister. MTS tie up in London. Thank you. Today was the
first day of the Olympic Winter Games in Italy. Switzerland took the first gold
medal and men's downhill skiing and all five medal events were held today. No
gold yet for Team USA, but many spectators are focused on a famous skier
from Burnsville, Minnesota, who practiced today. CBS is Seth Done in
Cortina. Italy is tracking it all for us, Seth. Today, athletes from the U. S.
competed in events across northern Italy in the most geographically spread out
Olympics ever. The U. S. Women's downhill ski team got in another
practice run today with Lindsay Vaughn finishing faster than she did Friday,
despite rupturing her A. C. L. It's a great story that she's come back after
all these years. Paul Adams, bomb from Tucson, is particularly interested in
seeing women's downhill here in Cortina. Then we head to Milan where we will be
seeing speed skating and men's figure skating. Wow. So you're really getting
around the country seeing these different Olympic venues? We are
though. Getting around involves some logistics. If you want to go from
watching the women's downhill skiers here in Cortina to see the men in
Borneo, well, that's at least five hours on winding mountain roads like
this. Google Maps suggests taking public transportation would be more than 15
hours. There are eight Olympic venues scattered across northern Italy. The
idea being to use existing infrastructure where possible to be more
sustainable. Unlike the single massive village of past Olympics here, they're
in a range of dormitories, pods and hotels. Some Spartan. This is the
athletes room in the Olympic village. It's actually a pretty large, like
hotel room. Others plush. I think one of my highlights it's gonna be the
outdoor infinity pool. Jen Bryant is with the U. S. Olympic and Paralympic
Committee. How complicated is it to have so many different venues? For us, it's
a real opportunity to put some teams in and around places that they know well
with coaches, staff that have been there before, supported athletes that
consistently before. Do you think we'll see more Olympics that are spread out
like this? I would think so.
There are eight medal events tomorrow, with the U. S. Looking good in figure
skating in Milan, while here in Cortina will be closely watching Lindsay Vaughn
and her teammates as they go for gold. Jerica. Thank you, Seth. Now to some
breaking news. The CEO and publisher of The Washington Post, Will Lewis, has
announced he is resigning this week. He presided over the layoffs of 300 of the
paper's 800 journalists straight ahead on the CBS weekend news. They are
beloved for their gentle nature, why they gathered today in big numbers. But
first, this story. I'm Chris Van Cleve in Santa Clara. Super Bowl Sunday is
more than just game day. It's big business. A look at what it means for
companies. Bottom lines next on the CBS weekend news.
This is Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California, home to Super Bowl 60.
Tonight, the countdown is on for the big game between the Seattle Seahawks and
New England Patriots. CBS is Chris Van Cleve is there for us tonight outside
what's being called the field of jeans. Chris Jerica. Some 90,000 people are
expected to be in town this weekend. On average, they'll spend about $5500 a
person. That means full hotels, packed restaurants. And if your name is on the
stadium, the big game could mean big business.
Super Bowl Sunday is more than just the game for Levi's. It's a chance to tell
their story on their home field. It's a big deal. It is a big deal. It's a big
game, but it's also a big cultural moment. Michelle Goss is Levi Strauss and
company's CEO. You can't talk about the Super Bowl without saying Levi's 100%
Levi's is on a hot streak. Their business is growing up 7% last year, as
is their popularity with Gen Z. They aim to use the stadium and the Super Bowl to
keep it going. Does anything in the way the economy is sacking up give you
pause? We're all staying really close and making sure that we are showing up
to our consumers in a relevant way. We have, you know, the core red tab of our
business. Um, and then we had a more entry level price point called
Signature by Levi Strauss. And then we have just launched this past year, Blue
Tab, which is in the most premium segment of the market. Two years ago,
the company spent $170 million to keep its name on the stadium through 2043.
Levi's Stadium is one of the things that gives us lots of brand heat, and
then we amplify it from there in terms of social media events across the city
as it relates to a moment like Sunday and the kind of brand heat that comes
off the Super Bowl that translates to sales. Absolutely. Yes, Sunday, they'll
air their first Super Bowl ad in 20 years.
2026 will also be the 48th time Budweiser and its iconic Clydesdales
make a Super Bowl appearance.
And ahead of kickoff, those Clydesdales trotted through San Francisco, making
deliveries, turning heads and stopping traffic. Can you have the Super Bowl
without the Clydesdales? I don't think you can have a Super Bowl without the
Budweiser Clydesdales.
Those Super Bowl ads will cost you between $8 and $10 million a spot.
Direct economic impact from Super Bowl 60 estimated to be around $600 million.
But factor in wages and tax revenue. Jerica, you're approaching a billion.
Wow, that's a lot of money. Chris Van Cleve. Thank you. Still ahead on the
CBS weekend news. If you can't go for the gold, go for the golden. We'll
explain coming up,
turning now to the best version of chaos imaginable today. Thousands
turned out in Colorado for Golden's and Golden Retrievers, that is, and their
many owners. The event began in 2019 as a small gathering on National Golden
Retriever Day, growing into this furry phenomenon. Next on the CBS weekend
news hockey great Hillary Knight on what it takes to compete in five Olympic
games. But first, a look back at this day in history. 3000 screaming
teenagers are at New York's Kennedy Airport to greet, you guessed it, the
Beatles.
This was humankind at its awe inspiring best today, a U. S. Astronaut pushing
the envelope of technology and knowledge to the limit.
Today, Hillary Knight showed why she's one of the greatest players ever in
hockey. With her 14th goal, the captain of Team USA moved into a tie for the
most goals scored by U. S. Women's hockey player at the Winter Olympics.
The U. S. Beat Finland in their opener 50 in tonight's weekend Journal. CBS
is Andres Gutierrez sat down with night before she headed to Italy for nearly
two decades. Hillary Knight has delivered in big moments. Now, at age
36, she's back for her fifth and final Olympics. Seems fitting. Things seem
very aligned, and I know this one's gonna be a special one as well.
We met up with the forward after practice in Seattle. The grind is the
same. Her role isn't. She's now Team USA's Olympic captain. Some of the
people in that room are lifelong friends and people I consider family.
And so to find success at the end of a grueling journey together would be a
wonderful reward to really put a bow on everything. Knight began playing hockey
when she was five, made Team USA as a teen. Today, she's a legend of the
sport in this country and record setter night is the only American hockey
player to appear in five Winter Olympics. She's faced both wins and
losses. There was gold in 2018, but otherwise hard losses to top rival
Canada. It brings out the best level of competition. I think that's what makes
the rivalry so great. Off the Olympic podium night helped build a new
professional women's league.
There wasn't a space for us years ago, and to be able to help facilitate and
shape that space is something I'm super honored to have been a part of and
continue to be a part of. She hopes to play in two more world championships
and stay involved in the sport. I grew up in this sport and it's given me so
many things and hopefully I've given something back. Is there anything else
you want Americans out there to know about before you head out to Italy for
these games? Watch us. That's all. Just watch us cheer on Team USA. We're
gonna play our hearts out for you. Captain America facing off for a final
gold. Andres Gutierrez, CBS News Seattle. Simple instructions and we'll
be watching. Well, that is the CBS weekend news for this Saturday.
Tomorrow on face the nation. Margaret Brennan's guest includes Senator Mark
Warner of Virginia and former FDA Commissioner Dr Scott Gottlieb. I'm
Jerica Duncan in New York. We thank you for watching. Have a great night and
we'll see you tomorrow.
