In the final round of the 2026 WM Phoenix Open, Chris Gotterup shot 7-under 64 and won with a long birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff after Hideki Matsuyama pulled his tee shot into the water.
The PGA TOUR returns to the desert for the 39th edition of the WM Phoenix Open, as TPC Scottsdale once again takes center stage for one of the most electric weeks on the schedule. The Stadium Course and its iconic par-3 16th, known as the “Colosseum” will be primed to entertain as a 123-player field featuring 10 former major champions and 11 of the top 20 players in the Official World Golf Ranking descends on Arizona. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler headlines the action for his second start of the season, returning to the site of his first TOUR victory and fresh off a win at The American Express, while two-time WM Phoenix Open champion Brooks Koepka joins him for his second start of the year since his return to the PGA TOUR. With sunny skies and ideal scoring conditions expected all week, the “Greenest Show on Grass” sets the stage for a star studded showdown that also includes Xander Schauffele, Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, Ben Griffin, J.J. Spaun and FedExCup co-leader Chris Gotterup, alongside fan favorites such as Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau and Max Homa. As raucous crowds and Super Bowl weekend energy converge, TPC Scottsdale once again provides a uniquely charged backdrop for one of the TOUR’s most anticipated stops.
This whole 10 for 14 fairways hit today.
Trevon, when he was getting ready
on the first hole, just ripped
three lazy fades and said I'm ready.
Well, that's. Taken on this bunker.
335 or so and look at this bounce right here.
Oh yeah. This brings the water in play.
The ripples tell the story.
That's going to cost him
a turn of it right there.
First snap hook.
Just not sure if it landed
above that line or not.
Seem in any doubt that it cost.
Volunteer trying to help.
Tidy, you're there.
What do you see?
We're being told by our spotters
that the ball actually hit the
base of one of the gallery rope
holders and then kicked into the water.
I understand that's what you guys saw in video.
Yeah, we we saw something that made it bounce.
Straight right? With aggression.
This still somewhat keeps him in
trying to get up and down for par.
Contact was terrific and so
is the line to start.
That's a great shot.
But did that keep able to
stay in the game with this?
In the pitch shot, he played from 48 yards.
I look at this angle right here.
Guys had to keep that front leg bent
just to be able to get down to the ball
and drive that trail shoulder through.
And he's not hanging around.
Trev Lubbidge in hand.
Beautiful angle.
Don't get too greedy.
First. This to win it.
Shoot 64. There is with Brady Stockton.
His caddy shoots 64 with a slew of birdies
and then birdies the first hole of playoff.
Yeah, so he voted six of the
last seven holes that he played.
This tournament always delivers.
Which is caddy his caddy runs in right
behind that he knows it looks good.
Budding star out here.
Chris, it seems like you can't
even believe what you just did.
You've won before,
but you have never won like this.
Your first playoff these crowds.
What's going through your body
when you walk off in regulation
and have about an hour to think
about it and realize we're back up?
I mean, I knew I need to make birdie on 18,
but you know, you never know.
Hideki Hideki was playing great and you know,
17 is birdieable,
but there's also some danger out there
and I just figured I'd stay loose
and I didn't think this would happen,
especially after you know Friday
and Saturday. But here we are.
When you think about what this
means for you moving forward,
you told me winning the Sony Open frees me up.
I can play mentally without a worry in the world.
Is this what the result is when
you play with no worries?
God, I don't know I.
I really have no idea.
I'm just having such a good time
playing right now and.
Make me cry every time.
You know my girlfriend's here.
She's like you won three times
without me here and she got to
see it and I know everyone at
home is watching and.
Just just so awesome, it seemed.
Listen, we see it.
We saw it. The Scottish Open when
the moment is biggest when your
back is against the wall,
that's when you show up.
Where does that come from?
You know. A lot of hard work.
You make me cry every time you know,
there's just so many people that
believe in me and. To be able to
share with them. I'm gonna be able
to get through it. It's just it's
just so much fun. It's really fun
to watch you let us in the way that
you have another unbelievable
victory for you. Chris got up.
Go celebrate this one with your girlfriend.
Jim, this is what it's all about.
Really, it really is.
You can pay these guys all the money in the
world, but they play for all kind of prize money.
What you saw is what it's about.
Congratulations to Jason Eisenberg,
the tournament chairman and Matt Moore,
the big chief. You guys had yourself
another spectacular year and you
got yourself a great champion.
And as I said, is that was headed to the hole?
He's got game sure does.
Now his 4th PGA TOUR victory since 2024
at 26 years old.
A decade, let it slip away. He knows it.
