In the beginning of this video i cover some basic steps to help you find your own gemstones, then we head into a new location to chase some beautiful sapphires and other cool stones.
normally i would be chasing gold but lately iv discovered sapphires can fetch up to $1000 per Ct once cut into a beautiful bespoke gem ready for sale, Now that ive learnt the art of faceting gemstones and armed with my passion for prospecting iv already made quite a few extra dollars for my efforts already.
There is so much more money to be made in gemstones then there is in gold and that is all i need to know to start prospecting those was layers hiding those big sapphire gemstones.
How to Find Gemstone's in Any Creek
Hey, what's up ladies and gentlemen and how ya's all doing?
Today we are out doing a bit of gem prospecting.
I have come to a brand new creek.
I have never been to this location before
and we are basically going to
work around all this bedrock,
work the cracks and crevices,
look for the wash layer
where the gemstones like to hide out in
and all that fun stuff.
And with a bit of luck hopefully
I do not eat any flies
during the process of the filming of this video.
Now, I just got here about 20 minutes ago.
I took a sample just out of this low pressure zone right here
where all these gravels are.
We done a few flippies
and we managed to find a very, very beautiful little piece
of black tourmaline.
Now, ideally I would love to find some coloured tourmaline
but we will take the black tourmaline with us
and any other cool gemstones that we find on this beautiful creek
on today's little adventure we are getting up to.
Now, if you are a beginner just starting out
you are going to want to need at least a gold pan
and a quarter inch sieve
and a one eighth inch sieve.
Now, it does help to have a nice little shovel
and a little scoop just to get into these particular areas.
Like you can see in the cracks and crevices here
that will be quite difficult to get my wider shovel in
but that's where the little scoop comes in handy.
And if you are a creative person
and not afraid to get into trouble off your missus
you can take one of her kitchen spoons
bend the ends up
and that works as a incredible crevicing tool.
You will need at least one snuffer bottle.
Now, that is just a personal preference
you don't have to, you can just throw everything into one container
even a glass jar if you have one on hand.
First thing you'll want to do is just take your gold pan
because the reason why we want a gold pan is
if there is any gold in this creek
you want to capture that as well
otherwise you are just throwing good stuff away.
Then you take your finer sieve
and you sit that inside your gold pan
with your larger sieve on top.
Like so.
Now, we will start filling our sieves up
and we will get as much material as we possibly can in them.
And we'll just go around filling our pan up
or our sieve up with all this gravel
before we start sieving it down.
And what you ideally want to be looking for
are little black spinel stones.
These spinels are the heavies that indicate
gemstones are very close to where you are finding those spinels.
I thought I would just add that in
just so you know exactly what process I'm going through
as I search for these particular gemstones in this creek.
We've gone ahead, we've grabbed our material from this location.
You can see there are some pretty cool mineralised rocks in amongst here.
I have not seen any colour or spinels as of yet.
Now that is what you want to be looking for as you're loading your pan.
And that will help give you an indication
whether you are sort of onto gemstones or not.
We'll submerse our pan completely under the water.
We'll sieve all the material through into our pan.
Then we'll just set the gold pan aside for now.
I will pan that out off camera and just show you the gold
that we are getting in each pan.
It isn't a great deal.
It probably isn't worth your time panning it out.
But in saying that, if you are on a creek with gems and gold,
why not capitalise on both?
Okay, we'll set that aside.
Now, we've got our finely sieved material and our oversized stuff.
Now, there will be some nice big crystals in amongst this.
You do want to check through these stones.
But the good majority of your stuff is going to be in the bottom of this one
once we do our sieve correctly.
To do your sieving correctly,
what you're going to do is get your sieve, submerge it,
and then we're going to rock it side to side
and get a nice even line of material through the centre.
Just like that.
Once you have your material in a bit of a sort of centred location in your sieve,
you want to pulsate your sieve up and down to flatten everything out
and have all your heavies drop to the bottom.
Now, you are going to want to do this at least three to four times
just to centre all of your heavy material at the bottom of your sieve
and in the middle of your flip.
And while you're doing it, you want to rotate your sieve around
in a clockwise direction.
Then, judge him up side to side like that
and pulsate again.
That pulsating action will make your heavy stones sink to the bottom of your sieve
and ready for the next step of this process.
Then, what you're going to do is you're going to flip it back towards you
and try and land it nice and flat on some nice soft ground.
Preferably, nice flat soft ground.
By doing this, you are giving yourself a nice flat area to lay your material out on.
And then, all you have to do is go through the centre areas of your material
and just keep your eyes peeled for coloured stones.
Now, I do see something way over here.
You will find that quartz won't kind of centre in the middle here
but rubies, diamonds, sapphires and other heavier gemstones
will accumulate in the centre with the black spinels.
I just want to show you a look.
We started getting some black stones in here.
I don't think they are spinels, but we are getting some nice clayish material
which might hold something half decent in this one.
Have a go at that one. That is nice.
Oh, yes.
Just spewing that it is only a beautiful piece of crystallised quartz,
unfortunately, and nothing too valuable.
So, I will go through my little sieve here
and I will update you in just a moment.
Very ugly bit of tourmaline.
Or not.
We will just continue sort of noodling through this.
It has been a little while since I have turned the camera on.
I have not really gotten a great deal, so that is why I haven't turned the camera on.
So, with that being said, ladies and gentlemen,
I hope you have enjoyed the few little pointers I gave you at the start of the video
and I hope those pointers have kind of given you a basic idea
of what you got to do to locate gemstones.
Now, what I have done today was a basic rundown.
Now, there is so much more that you can do.
You can get out into the centre of these creeks
and start digging deep till you hit a basement layer
where all the juicy gravels are.
But, given the current circumstances of having gumboots and waist-deep water,
I figured we would just hang around the edges
and just see what we could basically find today.
Now, what I am going to do is love yous and leave yous.
Peace. I am out.
And I will see yous in the next video.
I want to at least get a little bit of heavy.
Yep. Follow your lead.
And then when you find some gems, I am shovel-dogging.
Larger size stones than what I got.
That is a nice sapphire, that one.
Have a gander at that.
We have sapphires.
Little sapphire in there as well.
A lot of zircons and a lot of spinels.
That is beautiful.
Got to dig deep, son.
Oh, that is a nice scoop.
You have done that before, haven't you?
Looks like they are eating.
Go and ask them.
I might go friend them.
Store yourself a free snack.
I think in around here might be my option.
Right where we were in the previous video.
I think this is a likely spot.
I was doing okay in this particular area last time I was here.
And I did manage to pull out one tiny little ruby that I will show you is right here.
Now that ruby isn't the most valuable stone.
But where there is one, there is more.
See how you got a boulder just there.
And then the water is sort of pushing either side of it.
And creating a low pressure zone where the sand has started accumulating.
That would be an ideal spot to start punching down.
And seeing if we can get some heavies out of it.
But unfortunately that water is just a little bit too deep for the old gumboots.
So we will just stick to the shallow water here.
And get some material processed, eh?
Sancho is going to have a scratch around on the back side of this inside bend.
There is a bit of a pit just in under the water there.
Looks like someone already has flipped a bit of material there.
Yeah, so let's get all set up and get to work, eh?
Nice red ones here.
Yeah, beautiful.
Sort of getting up close to cutting size.
Not quite there yet.
It's got a few in there so far. Very nice.
Alright, I better knuckle down and see if I can't get results like that.
This is very fun to do.
Like even if you're not into gem faceting and you are just into lapidary work.
It is a great way to find some nice lapidary stones to take home.
And speaking of that.
I did manage to find two cool stones.
That I will take to do a bit of lapidary work with.
I'm going to sieve out all the material out of this sieve here.
Jeez, that's hard to do backwards.
But we'll sieve that out.
If we aren't getting any spinels or a nice quantity of spinels.
We will head on down near Sancho over here.
Where is he? Up there.
And we will see if we are having better luck down where he's at.
Opposed to where I'm at right now.
Nice gemmy bit of quartz.
Let's pull out some cheat codes.
Jump down in there.
Access the bottom.
One, two, three.
Not quite the calibre I wanted.
I think I'll grab my sieve and my shovel.
And we'll just jump down next to Sancho.
Start getting some nice coloured stones for us to have a gaze at.
Where's my shovel?
Just go for the deepest point.
Right at the bottom.
Yeah, I know.
Is it working?
I got one rock.
The leverage ratio is not good.
Got to dig deep, son.
Oh, that's a nice scoop.
You've done that before, haven't you?
Getting a little bit bigger.
Not quite cuttable size, but...
Well, a little bit fatter.
If it was one mil or half a mil more, yeah, you could cut a stone out of it.
Low grade.
Should have brought some tweezers.
Absolutely.
I'd be able to go for a leak then.
I am going to knuckle down, get some material processed.
And once we've processed a fair bit of material,
we'll grab all our...
Sorry, got a zircon in me mouth.
We'll grab all our concentrates
and we will sieve them all down
and have a bit of a reveal at what we've accumulated so far.
He's out.
Oh, look at that.
Nice sapphire.
Beautiful.
Can I pick it up?
Hold it to the light.
You can't see through him.
There.
Don't drop him.
Otherwise you're buying beers.
I'll owe you a cut.
Oh, it's...
It'll cut a nice blue one.
Real deep blue.
I'm gonna...
Wish I brought me flashlight with me.
Okay, we have done our flippy.
We went through and used this sieve.
And look at the concentration of blacks there.
And we got a sapphire just there.
And another beautiful sapphire.
I'll hold it up to the sun and see
if we can see through it.
It looks a bit greenish on the inside.
The end of the day has come about.
What we shall do is empty all our concentrates
from the bucket into the sieves.
We will do one more sieve
and then we'll concentrate all the heavies
to the center of our sieves.
Looks like they got a pretty good camp set up over there.
You do, don't you?
That's good enough for me.
I will keep my gold pan under this material
so any finer stones that we manage to pick up
won't fall through the sieves
and will be captured in that gold pan.
Yummy.
Gotta love sinking your boots in the cold water.
Okay.
We'll gingerly pan this back.
Starting to get some heavies up in the corner there.
How'd you do?
Oh, yeah.
There are some nice gemmy stones in there.
You definitely got larger sized stones than what I got.
That is a nice sapphire, that one.
That's a nice sapphire.
Yeah.
Very nice.
Now let's see what I got in my pan
and then we'll go through our sieves.
Have a gander at that.
We have sapphires.
Little sapphire in there as well.
A lot of zircons and a lot of spinels.
Now, I've gone ahead.
I've pulled out the material that I just panned through
and I also threw in some very gemmy bits of smoky quartz.
That is beautiful.
That is probably my best cutter for today.
Now, what I shall do is get all my centers.
We will throw it into the gold pan
and we'll take it on home, sort through it.
I will get a carat weight of all these zircons.
I will get a carat weight of all these sapphires I found.
Now, with all that being said,
I hope you've enjoyed what we got up to today
and I will see you ladies in the next video.
Oh, look at that.
Oh, yeah.
Now, that is beautiful.
That is a cutter for sure.
That's a cutter.
Yeah, that's better.
That's a cutter.
That's quartz, isn't it?
Smoky quartz.
There you go.
