MADEIRA
In this video we visit the Quinta do Barbusano winery in Madeira. A wonderful place in a valley surrounded by sharp mountains and green jungle. Taste the homemade wines and enjoy a stroll through the vineyards. Great views, fantastic wine and lovely people!
Today we will meet Jessica from the Quinta do Porpozano winery.
She will tell us everything about the regional wine from Madeira.
Hello, nice to meet you. I'm Jessica.
So, are you ready to start?
Yes, of course.
A little bit of history, a walk to the vineyard, I think it will be good.
Yeah, perfect. Let's go.
So, on Madeira we have this volcanic soil in all the island.
This volcanic soil gives our wines a lot of acidity.
And actually, this acidity, it's very good to the aging of our wines.
So we can keep the wines for many, many years.
This acidity gives us as well very specific wines that you cannot find in too many places.
This volcanic soil gives the acidity and gives a little bit more minerality as well.
So for this, we can do different wines.
We can use the aging on the stainless steel tanks.
We can do the aging on the barrels as well.
And the barrels in our winery, we only use the French oak barrels.
It's an option of Mr. Antonio, the producer.
And he liked very much the flavor, the smoke, the vanilla,
the caramel that the French oak gives to the wines, actually.
Then our wines, even with the aging on the barrels, we don't have very full body wines.
And this is because of the weather on the island.
We have kind of a tropical weather.
We have not very hot summers, not cold winters.
So because of the summer, it's not too hot.
We will not have very full body grapes and full body reds.
But we have our wines.
So very specific wines, different wines that you can only taste on this island.
What makes this place so special for the tourists to visit the winery?
It's very interesting because it's into the nature of Madeira Island.
We are in the valley of San Vicente.
You are surrounded by nature.
And then you have authentic of the island.
We have the wines that are produced here.
They grow and they are produced on this valley.
We do mostly the wine tastings.
You can enjoy the wines.
You can enjoy the view.
This is our Vinho do Antonio from 2019.
And this one, it's a blend of four different varieties.
So we have here, again, Aragonese.
Then Turiga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
And we add some small pieces of French oak to the stainless steel tanks.
They stay in contact with the wine for six months only.
So it gives a little bit of body to this wine.
But we cannot really feel it in our palate.
In the aromas, you will have again red fruits,
a little bit of black pepper, tobacco, chocolate and coffee.
It's not what you have on the big cities.
Always kind of the same thing.
Here is more authentic.
It's more Madeira Island.
It's more us.
