Most wild animals around the world are known for eating a specific type of food
Snakes feed on various small animals amphibians and reptiles
Most species in the Povidi family such as cattle and goats feed on grass or leaves
However there are some strange and fascinating creatures on this planet that do not follow these natural rules
And they eat foods you'd never expect
This video explores the oddities of the natural world and takes a closer look at some of the most fascinating creatures that fall into this category
To learn about the first animal species we can explore the coastal waters of the Americas
where we meet the vegetarian sharks
The bonnethead shark also known as the bonnet shark is a small species belonging to the hammerhead shark genus and is a notably unique member of its kind
This is the only shark species that exhibits sexual dimorphism in head shape
Adult females have broad round heads while males have pointed or bulging heads
These sharks primarily inhabit warm shallow waters and occasionally venture into brackish environments
You don't need to worry if you find yourself swimming alongside a few
bonnethead sharks as they are not only harmless but also relatively small in size
Most individuals are about 90 cm long but some giant specimens of the species can reach up to 1.5 meters in length
In nature they are typically found in groups of between five and fifteen individuals
However there have also been instances where groups numbering in the hundreds or even thousands were observed
Schooling behavior is common among species in the hammerhead shark genus
What makes the bonnethead shark unique is its diet
Most large shark species around the world feed on other animals such as marine mammals fish or mollusks
Bonnethead sharks follow this trend to a certain extent by feeding on crustaceans and small fish
However the bonnethead shark is the only known shark species that is omnivorous as it also consumes a significant amount of seagrass
In some cases seagrass makes up as much as 62% of the diet found in the stomachs of certain bonnethead sharks
And this feeding behavior is not observed in other shark species
There are several hypotheses regarding why they feed in this manner
Experts believe they feed on seagrass to protect their stomachs from the claws of green crabs one of the bonnethead shark's primary prey species
The green crab's sharp shell can easily injure sharks
Seagrass can help cover these sharp spikes
And of course bonnethead sharks can also digest seagrass a plentiful food source in the areas where they live
Their teeth are adapted for biting and tearing fish as well as gripping prey
Bonnethead sharks also have other features that help them hunt these types of prey
Like other hammerhead sharks they have sensory organs along their heads that help detect electrical signals from prey
This indicates they are better adapted for hunting prey rather than eating plants
Yet bonnethead sharks still make use of this food source and may even rely on it to handle tougher prey
Thus although the bonnethead shark is neither the largest nor the most fearsome shark species
Yet it's an intriguing species in its own right and one of the few shark species with a balanced diet
Today humans have documented over 400 surviving parrot species each with its own unique colors and behaviors
Parrots are incredibly intelligent birds and have therefore adapted well to urban environments
In some parts of the world they have begun to invade and establish themselves as invasive species
For example some parrot species are not native to regions in North America such as California and Florida
And there are even non-native parrot species in colder climates such as England and Ireland
They are long-lived birds with some species like the Pink Cockatoo living up to 70 years and certain parrots reportedly surviving beyond 90 years
Most parrot species are herbivores or omnivores with seeds fruits and leaves making up the majority of their diet
However a few fascinating parrot species prefer a somewhat more aggressive diet
Some of the most famous examples can be found in the beautiful country of New Zealand
The Kia species is endemic to the high mountains of South Island New Zealand
At first glance it doesn't appear to be a ruthless predator
This parrot has a stunning olive-green plumage and when it flies it reveals a vibrant orange hue beneath its wings
Such vibrant colors are common among parrot species
And birds like the kapo or ca share similar coloring
The kiwi doesn't appear to be equipped to become a top predator in New Zealand
Since it lacks sharp claws and its beak appears better suited for eating seeds and fruit
The Kia feeds on more than 40 different plant species but
it also preys on other birds insects and even small mammals
For most of its existence Kia did not live alongside mammals
because mammal species only recently arrived in New Zealand
This island nation has only a few native bat species
all other mammal species in New Zealand were introduced
And as an intelligent bird species Kia has
learned to coexist and even hunt small mammals
However they are also attacked by other invasive species
Rats and marsupials steal their eggs and nestlings
In the past humans have also killed them in large numbers
One of the main reasons behind this pursuit is their predatory behavior
People believe that Kia killed the old man and the kid
However the debate over whether Kia is a predator or a survivor is highly complex and contentious
because they were only observed feeding on the deceased elder
And for a long time there was no evidence that Kia had killed the elder while alive
Some farmers believe the species has killed up to 500 of their cattle annually
However they do not always directly cause the death of the former
The farmed salmon industry is highly developed in New Zealand
and this country has the highest density of sheep in the world
According to 2007 data New Zealand had 39 million sheep
and this means there are more than ten former officials per capita
Nowadays although the number of former officials has decreased
Yet the shrimp farming industry remains an important part of the economy
Kia will attack prey by leaping onto them and stabbing with its sharp iron-like beak
These behaviors typically occur at night
The wounds inflicted by Kia usually don't kill the victim
immediately but they can lead to death from infection
And Kia could also scare the former so much that he jumped off the stone terrace
Kia's naturally cheerful and playful nature makes
it hard to believe they could behave this way
But like other parrots Kia knew how to make the most of her circumstances
What's strange is that not all species of Kia are carnivorous and there
is a hypothesis about how they began associating ctenophores with food
When the old ones die they attract many insects
The Kia species can be drawn to these insects and subsequently begin consuming the old ones
Since Kia often live in groups they easily learn
from one another and when one begins eating live prey
The other individuals will quickly imitate this behavior
Some experts believe they may have hunted extinct
bird species like the Moa in a similar manner
But since these bird species have been extinct for a
long time we may never know whether this actually happened
This behavior makes Kia one of the most extraordinary parrot species in the world
And this is undoubtedly one of the strangest parasitic relationships on this planet
Vegetarian spider
Spiders are a nightmare for many people around the world
yet these creatures will steer clear of us whenever possible
Even if some movies and media have made you believe
that spiders are extremely dangerous creatures
However in reality deaths caused by spider bites are extremely rare
It is estimated that on average only seven people worldwide die from spider bites each year
This number is only about half the annual fatalities caused by
shark attacks Spiders only bite when they feel threatened or crushed
In many cases they bite without injecting venom
Spiders can reach impressive sizes with some of the largest species being bird-eating spiders
However these creatures are often misunderstood
Although their name suggests they prey on birds they rarely target such species
Instead spider-eating birds primarily feed on arthropods worms and amphibians
Besides large species like bird-eating spiders there are many
fascinating smaller spiders and our main character is a perfect example
To find it we can head to Central America home to the Bagira Kiplingi spider
Bagira Kiplingi is a small jumping spider with a striking brownish-green coloration
What's remarkable isn't its color but another unique characteristic
Jumping spiders get their name because they leap directly
onto their prey primarily caterpillars and other small insects
However this species of spider Bagira Kiplingi primarily feeds on plants
About 90% of their diet consists of fatty oil nodules called Beltane
Bodies that grow at the tips of leaves on certain plant species
Occasionally they also eat cuttlefish and even steal ant larvae from ant colonies passing by
Although they occasionally consume other animal
species the majority of their diet consists of plants
The isotopic signatures in this spider's tissues indicate a herbivorous diet
dicating that their primary food source is plants
It is extremely rare for a spider species to feed in this manner
And although there are other omnivorous spider species none has a diet primarily composed of plants like Bagira Kiplingi does
This is a perfect example of animal that defies
the rules No other spider species is like it
In many parts of the world rodents are primarily
viewed as pests yet they are misunderstood creatures
Some rodents are enormous in size while
others play vital roles in their ecosystems
Most rodents are highly intelligent and well-adapted
This is one of the reasons they can be found nearly everywhere around the world
Some species of rodents will eat almost anything and make use of the food we leave behind
while other species have highly specialized diets
Grasshopper mice are truly distinctive because they are carnivorous rodents
And there are some very unique behaviors and adaptations as well
Three species of field mice still exist within the genus and they primarily inhabit the United States and Mexico
Field mice are commonly found in dry grasslands and desert areas
They hunt for centipedes spiders scorpions and even snakes
Scorpions and snakes are of course dangerous creatures
Fortunately field mice are immune to the venom of many species in the regions where they live
The field mouse is described as stalking its prey in a manner similar to a cat creeping stealthily before suddenly pouncing
It seems this gnawing species has somehow convinced itself that it's a top predator
because they will howl like wolves to defend their territory
Field mice not only become aggressive when attacking prey but also attack other species when confined together
There have been instances where field mice were kept with other mouse species and they ended up killing those unfortunate companions
They even targeted the bark beetle the only species of bark beetle found in North America
And a bite from this species can easily paralyze an adult
One of the most fascinating things about these mice is how little they differ in appearance from other mouse species
Beneath its harmless exterior lies one of the most ferocious biting species in the world
Most frog species are known for their carnivorous diets preying on insects spiders and even snakes
The frog's hunting technique is famous worldwide but at least one species chooses a different approach
In the state of Rio de Janeiro you can find a brightly colored frog species that loves fruit
Brazilian fruit tree wasps are typically brownish-yellow and are found around flowering plants
Occasionally they also consume small arthropods but their diet primarily consists of fruits seeds and flowers
Brazil nut trees have several adaptations that enable them to thrive in this manner
for example their immunity toxins found in certain plants they consume
This appears to grant the Brazilian frog a far more peaceful life than most other frog species
And remarkably no other frog species has adapted to this diet
