Somewhere in the United Kingdom's Blue Reef Aquarium in Portsmouth,
there is an oyster 10 times the size of a modern mollusk that potentially holds one
of the biggest pearls the world has ever known, if only they would open it.
This fascinating oyster was discovered by fishermen in the UK,
who recognized they were looking at something special.
They were right.
As soon as the aquarium took a look at the oyster, they determined they were looking
at an ancient fossil.
Further evaluation estimated its age to be at least 145 billion years old.
The big gemstone inside?
Based on the dimensions of the shell, it would be the size of a golf ball.
9. The Pearl of Lao Tzu
Also known as the Pearl of Allah, this is believed to be one of the largest natural
pearls in existence.
Its history is just as interesting.
The Pearl of Lao Tzu was originally found in the Philippines.
However, when an American called Wilbur Cobb saved a tribal chief's son from malaria,
he was given the pearl as a token of his gratitude.
The pearl is almost 10 inches across and weighs over 14 pounds.
As you can expect, it's insanely expensive.
Even back in 1982, it was valued by geologists to be $60 million.
In 2007, that amount arose to a whopping $93 million.
8. La Peregrina Pearl
Discovered in the 1500s near Panama, the La Peregrina Pearl has a rich history.
It was so significantly large, weighing over 56 carats,
that it was gifted to King Philip II of Spain, who then gave it to his wife, Queen Mary.
After she died, numerous queens got to enjoy the pearl as it made its way through France to
Austria and then into the hands of Napoleon Bonaparte.
It eventually reached actress Elizabeth Taylor,

is a 43.60-grain freshwater pearl that was found in 1967 in the River Tay of Perth in Scotland.
Found by one William Abernathy, the oyster responsible for this enormous creation
is a mussel from the species Margaritifera margaritifera.
6. The Big Pink Pearl
Once the holder of the Guinness Book of World Records' title of
largest abalone pearl in the world, the Big Pink Pearl remains a marvel to be seen.
It was first found at Salt Point State Park in Petaluma, California,
by a diver called Wesley Rankin in 1990.
In 1991, the pearl was valued at a whopping $4.7 million.
There is some murkiness around the exact oyster produced,
with some crediting the red abalone species called Haliotis rufescens
and others saying it's the pink abalone species known as Haliotis corrigata.
Either way, abalone oysters are known to produce some of history's most beautiful pearls.
Vibrant in color, luster, and coated with thick layers,
to this day, the Big Pink Pearl remains with Rankin.
5. Oyster with 48 Pearls
Imagine this, you're at a friend's house, enjoying a nice pan-fried oyster appetizer
when you start choking on around 40 pearls.
This is exactly what happened to Vancouver native printmaker Eric Berkwin,
who was at a friend's house in Sonicton with his wife Alice one shiny Saturday evening.
When Eric first started choking, Alice rushed over to her husband,
only to realize that he was spitting out pearls.
They counted up to 48 of them.
You may be wondering what they'll do with them.
Alice is thinking of making a pendant or some kind of earrings or a ring.
4. The Imperial Hong Kong Pearl
Also known as the Miracle of the Sea, a saltwater oyster named Pictata maxima,
an oyster found between southern China and northern Australia, produced this giant mass.
A breathtaking silver-white in color, its unusual drop shape attracted the attention
of Chinese Empress Dowager Tzu Hai, who ruled China from 1861 to 1908.
The Empress wore it for years, placing it on an amulet to grant her good luck.
When she died, all kinds of pearls and gems were placed alongside her in her tomb.
In her mouth, a large pearl was placed.
20 years later, the tomb was raided.
Eventually, by the 1940s, the pearl had made its way to Hong Kong
and into the United States company Imperial Pearl Syndicate.
3. Arco Valley Pearl
Weighing a whopping 575 carats, the Arco Valley Pearl dates back to the 11th century.
It's the third-largest natural pearl in the world, valued at $8 million.
It's believed that previous owners of this magnificent gemstone
included the likes of Genghis Khan and Marco Polo.
After Polo died in 1324, the pearl never found a permanent home.
It's known that it reached an Austrian aristocratic family, the Arco Valleys,
which is how it got its name.
Now, the whereabouts of this white blister pearl with blue and pink overtones is relatively unknown.
It's believed it's still in Europe.
2. The Giga Pearl
Yes, there is such a thing as a Giga Pearl.
That's how large this upcoming pearl is.
The Giga Pearl is a family heirloom that has been passed down for over 60 years.
It belongs to an Ontario native family, the Rays.
Right now, it belongs to one Abraham Rays, whose grandfather was the one to discover it.
The grandfather bought the clam in 1959 from a Filipino fisherman as a gift for Ray's aunt.
And what an amazing gift it turned out to be when a mass of cream-colored pearls was found.
At first, they didn't even know it was a pearl.
In 2016, the infamous aunt passed all the artwork and antiquities she'd collected over the years
and gave it to Abraham, a mineral broker.
It's estimated that the Giga Pearl's value is between $60 and $90 million.
1. Two-Foot Long Pearl
Hands down, the biggest pearl to ever be found is one that was actually hidden for
the better part of 10 years before it was unearthed once again.
See, a decade ago, a Filipino fisherman was freeing his ship's anchor off the coast of the
Palawan Island in the Philippines when he noticed something.
As he was swimming to pull up the anchor, he had dislodged the largest clam he had ever seen.
Inside was a two-foot long, 26 inches big, to be precise, pearl.
The fisherman took it home.
Deciding to keep it as a good luck charm, he hid it under his bed.
This worked well until the house burned down.
Thankfully, the two-foot long pearl, which later turned out to weigh a whopping 75 pounds,
survived.
Its value?
A mind-blowing $100 million.
