Big man in a suit of armor. Take that off, what are you?
Genius billionaire playboy philanthropist.
In Tropic Thunder, Robert Downey Jr.'s character is a hilarious parody of an extreme method actor.
One hilarious unscripted moment occurs when he delivers a line in a funny accent
with a diving forward roll.
In Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, there's a scene where Michelle Monaghan is supposed to slam the door
but she completely misses her cue.
Downey's left awkwardly standing there, forced to ad-lib far longer than expected.
In The Avengers, the line genius billionaire from Tony Stark was improvised by RDJ.
He came up with this witty response on the spot,
making it one of the most memorable unscripted moments in the film.

In one hilarious scene from The Age of Ultron, Downey Jr., as Tony Stark,
tries to make an important point to Thor, but Hemsworth seems to forget his line and
just nods awkwardly, giving Downey nothing to work with.
Thinking quickly, Downey fired back with a savage line on the spot.
In Iron Man 3, Downey Jr. had trouble remembering the names of all the different Iron Man suits in
an outtake. When he couldn't remember the name Red Snapper, he looked at the camera and made
a funny face, asking for help. In Age of Ultron, during the wood chopping scene,
Tony approaches the tractor and says a line that wasn't in the script.
Whedon later admitted in the DVD commentary that he kicked himself for not thinking of it first.
Tony's non-stop joking didn't stop there. In one scene, he kept poking Bruce with a
taser so many times it made Bruce lose his composure, almost to the point where he could
have very well transformed into the Hulk behind the scenes. In Captain America Civil War, during
the surprise visit to Peter's room, there were several hilarious outtakes where RDJ and Tom
kept trying to make each other break character off camera. They got so caught up in their playful
banter that, during the tense meeting scene, Tom forgot to move aside for Tony Stark to sit,
prompting Robert to improvise the line. If there's one thing you wouldn't want to do a retake for,
it's definitely smelling a grown man's stomach. It's already super disgusting and awkward,
but Robert Downey Jr. had to do it again, thanks to Zach Galifianakis slipping up.
In one scene from Iron Man 3, RDJ is meant to show off Tony Stark's confidence with a dramatic
arm gesture, but the moment turns too silly for Downey and he can't help bursting out laughing.
In Iron Man 2, the scene where Tony tells Pepper to wear a surgical mask was actually improvised,
and was a nod to Pepper being sick during the filming of that scene.
While Tropic Thunder may have earned Robert an Oscar nomination for his perfect embodiment of
a black character, behind the scenes, his wildly exaggerated accent was something the
crew simply couldn't handle, and they broke down many times. As if that ridiculous accent
wasn't enough, he'd randomly improvise goofy lines in that over-the-top voice,
making it nearly impossible for the crew to keep a straight face.
In The Avengers, the intense fight scene after Thor interrupts Tony while he's capturing Loki
features a hilarious remark made by Tony Stark on the spot.
While the first part was given to him by Joss Whedon,
the rest was all Tony's improvised humor on set.
In The Avengers, during the tense meeting scene with the S.H.I.E.L.D.,
Tony Stark calls out a S.H.I.E.L.D. employee with a hilarious ad-lib remark.
Director Joss Whedon loved the moment so much that they not only kept the scene,
but also went back and added CGI to the employee's screen to make it look like he
was actually playing the game. In Due Date, there's a scene where RDJ is riding in the
back of a rickety car on a bumpy road. The ride gets so rough he can't stay in character,
so he just rolls with it and breaks into a spontaneous little dance.
In Avengers Infinity War, right after Tony takes care of Ebony Maw,
he and Doctor Strange have a serious discussion. Peter tries to jump in with a joke,
but immediately gets shut down by a completely improvised ad-lib from Tony Stark.
In Tropic Thunder, it felt like RDJ didn't play Blackface. Rather, Blackface played him,
with him nearly breaking into his real self not once, but many times throughout the movie.
It's hilarious to see that even a messed-up take from Robert had so much potential to make it into
the final cut. Luckily, Jay Burchill never cracked up, and the moment's absurdity ended up
making it into the final version. In The Avengers, Downey Jr. used to stash snacks around the set for
when he got hungry. During one scene, he randomly offered Chris Evans some blueberries, and the
moment was so natural, they decided to leave it in the final cut. In Avengers Endgame, the paper
football scene between Tony Stark and Nebula wasn't originally planned by the directors.
In fact, Downey Jr. and Karen Gillan came up with the hilarious idea themselves as a way to show how
the characters spent time while stranded in space. In Avengers Age of Ultron, during the scene where
the Avengers raid the HYDRA facility to retrieve the scepter, there's a moment when Tony is
searching for something inside the Sokovia Lab. That repeated whispering, and the cute little
yay were completely improvised by Tony on set. In Avengers Endgame, the heartbreaking scene where
Tony returns to Earth, furious and emotional over not being able to save Peter and the rest of the
world, had him so deep into character that he often did things in anger that were completely
off-script. In Iron Man 2, right after the wild birthday party ends in a tense face-off between
Tony and Rhodey, Tony cracks a line so funny that he can't help but laugh in the midst of
all the chaos. Another hilarious moment between the duo happens when Tony leans in to open the
car door, and Peter thinks he's going in for a hug, to which Downey quickly corrects him with
a totally improvised line. In one of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang's outtakes, after Val Kilmer's character
calls Robert Downey an idiot, he runs over to hug him, creating a genuinely wholesome and funny
moment on set. In Due Date, there's a scene where the border agent makes a hilarious comment about
the dog, and Robert Downey can't help but let out a chuckle. That moment was actually all Robert
Behind the scenes, he kept breaking character because the agent kept fumbling the line take
after take, and it was just too funny to hold it in. The hilarious ending to the Chitauri fight,
when Robert asks the group if they want shawarma, was completely his idea.
You can see Chris Hemsworth smiling, while Chris Evans is seen resting his face on his hand and
not eating anything, since he had already signed another movie that required him to grow a beard.
