Hi friends, it's me, Silly Miss Lily.
And Hazel.
And today we're over at the pottery room
in Clarksville, Tennessee,
where you get to pick your own clay gift
and then paint it however you want.
I'm so excited.
Do you know what you're gonna pick yet?
Um, I'm not quite sure.
I'm not quite sure.
There's so many things to choose from.
Come on.
Okay, let's see, let's see.
There are mugs.
Tell me, tell me.
Mom, I see a heart gift over there.
Oh, let's go see.
There's so many different gifts you can pick.
Oh, that is so beautiful for the holidays.
And look over here.
There's different ornaments you can paint.
There's a little owl.
Hoot, hoot.
A feather.
This is a tooth.
What's the roots?
Root canal tooth.
That'd be a great gift for the dentist.
Hazel, look at this.
A unicorn.
You can paint your own unicorn.
So this kind of has a great example of,
here's the clay gift
and here's how someone could paint it.
But what's so great about this place
is that you get to pick the colors.
We got an elephant, a giraffe,
a big elephant,
a big unicorn.
Oh, this is so cute.
A little cow.
Moo, who's gonna paint me?
Moo.
Oh, look at these beautiful trees.
These would be such a beautiful gift for Christmas.
And look over here.
Here, all the different paints that you get to choose.
So there are colors from darker blue, lighter blue.
This one's called blizzard blue.
Speckled the blues.
This one's called bouncing berry.
Tiger tail.
And they all go from lighter greens,
darker greens, lighter blues.
There's so many colors.
So there's these, these, these, these, these.
Oh, cute, cute.
Dinosaurs.
There's a bunny.
These.
A little lizard.
These.
Oh my goodness.
This.
Big.
You know what?
I guess when choosing a gift,
it's important to think of the person
that you're gonna gift it to.
It's like, hey, what do they love?
Do they love elephants or giraffes or chickens?
Vroom, vroom.
Vroom.
This would be a really cool truck to paint.
What colors would you do?
Maybe a red truck or make it a big blue truck.
Vroom, vroom.
These are like the things that open and close, maybe.
I love that, like a little treasure chest.
You wanna see this cool mug?
Look, two mugs, but when you cheers,
it makes a heart.
So Paisley, what are you thinking on the gifts
and how many should we do?
How about one for Grandma and one for Cotton?
I love that idea.
Okay.
Okay, let's do it.
The question is, what's for Cotton
and what will Grandma like?
So let's talk about it.
What would Cotton like?
Oh, look.
It's a little house shaped like an acorn with a door,
a couple of windows.
And look in here, you can use it as a little candle holder.
So you put your candle in there
and they'll light up the windows.
Oh, that would be so cozy for Cotton.
That would make a great Christmas gift for him, huh?
That sounds good.
Now what are we thinking for Grandma?
How about a big kitchen?
Yeah, she's gonna love that.
I'm really thinking she'll like this kitchen.
Maybe I should get the kitten
because I just love kittens so much.
You love your kittens.
I think that would be a perfect gift for you.
How about a little butterfly?
Yeah, this is gonna be beautiful.
Let me find that table.
You should find the perfect table.
Oh, how about this one?
I love this one.
Look, we've got...
Meow, meow.
We picked out some great gifts.
Okay, so let's go put our acorns.
Acorns.
We're not gonna put our acorns on,
we're gonna put our aprons on.
Okay, so let me pull that.
Oh, this is gonna be beautiful.
Over your beautiful head.
And then turn this way, I'll tie the back for you.
Okay, you are gonna be so ready.
And if I get anything on me, I'll just wipe it off.
Boom.
Easy peasy, lemony.
Squeezy.
And I'm gonna put mine on.
I got a fun little purple one.
I'll get my kitten.
Okay, okay, okay.
Okay, now we're all gonna be ready.
I'm so excited.
I don't know which color to choose.
To go with the pink, with the purple,
rainbow colors, all the colors.
Oh, and look, here's Miss Kim,
who's the owner of the pottery room here in Clarksville.
Miss Kim, we're so excited to be here.
Welcome.
Can you tell us more about
what the next step is gonna be?
All right, so you guys picked out your piece.
The next thing you're gonna do
is you're gonna look up at our wall of colors.
And when you look up here, Paisley,
I want you to look at the squares
because when the paint comes out of the bottle,
it looks totally different than it does
when it's glazed and fired.
So one of my favorite ones to show is this one
because this one is called glass green,
but it doesn't look green at all, right?
It's all brown.
It turns into this.
Wow.
Isn't that wild?
And so when you paint it, it's this brown color,
but in the kiln, when it heats up, it turns into this.
So all these colors do the same thing.
So if you look, say this hintamint,
it's got three stripes on it.
That's showing you if you do one coat of the color,
two coats of the colors, or three coats of the colors.
And then some of our favorite ones are over here
because they have sprinkles in them.
So see these ones over here,
like princess party and mango tango.
If you paint with those,
it's like there's little grits in it,
kind of like sand, but those are the sprinkles.
And then when they go into our kiln and get fired,
they melt out and they give you
all of those colors automatically in there.
So those are really fun to use too.
Oh, that's beautiful.
Oh, wow.
So then does the color change due to the temperature?
Yes.
And because it's so hot in the kiln?
Yes. Wow.
So when it cooks in the kiln, it changes.
And also, so we call them paints
because we're painting them on,
but technically they're an underglaze,
which is liquid clay with colorant in it.
Oh, wow.
And so you're basically painting something
that used to be clay with something
that still is clay with colorant.
And when they bond together and the glaze goes over,
it changes it.
So this is one example of our rainbow colors.
When you paint them and they dry,
see how light they are and they kind of,
do you want to feel it?
It feels like chalk.
Oh, yeah.
See, it feels like chalk on the ground
because when we put glaze on it and fire it,
that is actually this dark red.
Wow.
And that's actually orange and yellow, green.
See how light that purple is and it gets bright?
Wow.
So isn't that really cool?
We think of it like magic, but really it's science.
Ooh, we love science.
It's like, how do I choose?
It's like, probably the princess party.
Princess party for the class.
Princess party is going to be wonderful.
I can't wait to see how that turns out.
Pink and blue.
Pink and blue, that's one of our favorite light pinks.
Moody blue.
Moody blue, that's probably our favorite dark blue.
That is going to be so cool to see,
really going from light to those pigmented colors,
really bright.
How about that Cracker Jack?
Cracker Jack?
Ooh, I like that one.
Okay.
Now that we've got our colors,
we got to pick out some paintbrushes
so we can use the big ones for the body,
like your speckled pink for the cat's body.
Some of the medium sized ones or the smaller ones.
Yeah, grab a big one.
This one looks like your whole body.
Miss Gemma's saying some of these shorter,
smaller ones are great for little details.
So like the eyes or the-
This one would be nice for my eyes.
Okay.
Meow, meow.
You can also use the back of the paintbrush too.
So if you dip the tail end in the paint
and then you can put little dots and things with it.
So you can use either end of the paintbrush.
And then we have these little chunks of sponges
if you wanted to do any sponging.
Yeah, like Alaco-Cat style or anything like that.
I'd like to get one.
Yeah, go for it.
You can grab those.
I'll grab you a couple more paintbrushes
so each one of your colors can have one
and then you can start painting.
And then we also have these little bottles for at the end.
Oh, cute.
And these ones have different colors in them
and you just take that stick pin out and you can write.
And so you could actually write like your name on it.
Oh, we gotta write Paisley.
Or you could write the name of your cat on it.
Oh, and the little collar.
Yeah.
We can write your kitty's name on it.
Meow, meow, or you know.
How about Mowey?
Mowey is a great name.
Okay, we'll write that on there.
Would you like blue chair or yellow chair today?
Today I think I'll go for yellow.
Here we go.
I got my butterfly.
I got my colors.
Hey, I'm just so excited.
I don't know where to start.
What are you gonna start with, the body?
I'm gonna start.
I'm gonna start with the body, I guess that's what.
I got two parts.
I'm going for the body.
Are you?
Okay, that's gonna be beautiful.
I just know it is.
I'm gonna try this mermaid tail.
Dip my brush.
Chocolate.
Oh, it really is liquidy.
I'll paint like the back
to help me get to the other side of the body, okay?
Good idea.
And you can rotate it whichever way you'd like.
You wanna, you know, be comfortable.
Can I wash this?
Cause I have to wash off my color.
I think I'll do a little,
a goat tail on my kitty.
Yes.
Be nice.
You know what would be interesting to see
is how many different ways you can paint one.
So I have a butterfly
and I'm starting with this kind of blue mermaid tail color
but somebody else might do a pink or a red or a purple.
It'd be kind of fun to make little jars too
for like, flower jar for baking
or a little salt container.
And then I'm thinking of black next, like meow, meow.
Aw.
You know, I kind of ran out of my color here.
So I'm also mixing colors.
So I'm gonna have a mixed butterfly.
That's okay.
Yeah, okay.
I think so.
You know, butterflies come in so many different colors.
And I'm gonna paint the head pink.
Oh, that's gonna be cute.
You know, I started with like a green color
for my butterfly, but it's kind of turning more into blue.
But I guess once it's fired in the kiln,
it's gonna turn a whole new different color.
I think I like this like pinkish color for the ears.
Yeah, girl.
I think now it might be time for a little wash.
And then dry a little more black.
That's the beauty of art.
You can choose your own design,
how you paint it, how you color it.
And there's no mistakes in art.
Right.
But I ran out of paintbrushes to use.
I kind of got-
That's okay.
Would you like to grab another paintbrush?
Sure.
Yeah, go for it.
Of course, a purple crystal.
Two purple crystals.
Well, I'll do three, just cause purple crystals are fun.
I think I need three more brushes.
I want more paintbrushes, I need them, so.
It almost looks like it absorbs.
Cause I'm guessing since it's paint,
but it's like dyed clay, essentially.
I think she used the word bonds.
With the clay object, right?
Cause they're so similar.
It attaches itself to it as it dries
and it looks so pretty.
On the paws, I'm going to do a little dab of my sponge.
Yay.
I'm gonna add a little detailed design here
with cute little brushstrokes.
Like cute little butterfly
just taking off.
Let's try to do him on this side too.
So our art comes from our heart.
Follow your art.
Or follow your heart.
Follow your heart and art.
Follow your art to your heart.
I kind of loving this.
Maybe I'll do little stripes here too
to add a little green.
All right.
And you know what?
I think I finished my butterfly.
And it's so interesting cause the colors again
look so light here.
Like pastel colors.
So light pink, light green, light blue.
But as we put it in the kiln,
there's going to get fired like a really hot oven.
And the clay paint will kind of attach itself
to the clay butterfly.
And the colors will turn more bright.
I'm so excited to see it.
Cause I think it's going to be so beautiful.
Okay, I finished my cat.
Wow.
That's going to look fantastic.
And my little beautiful paint and then I should be,
and then we can move on to our next craft.
That sounds good.
I'll paint the heart bottle.
Okay.
We're now working on the little special gift for Cotton.
We're going to have some blendy, foresty colors.
But I think Cotton's going to like that.
Okay, now it's time to take them to the back
where they can dry before they go into the kiln.
Ooh, let's go see it.
Miss Kim, I want to know everything about the kiln room.
I want to know what's going on in here.
Tell us everything.
All right, it's a little bit scrunchy in here.
Okay.
So over here, we have lots of things going on.
These things are all things that we use
inside of our big kilns.
Because every time we put a piece into the kiln,
if we lay it on a shelf, it'll stick to the shelf.
It'll melt to it.
So what we do is we'll put one of these on the bottom
so that it can cook like that.
And then when it comes out, we pop that off.
Wow.
And so that's what these all are.
They have already come out of the kiln.
See how shiny they are?
They're not dry like yours
because they have a layer of glass on it.
So these ones came out of the kiln already.
And then back behind you, there's actually two kilns.
This one over here is still a little warm,
but this one I can let you look into if you want.
So this great big thing,
it's basically made of what's called kiln brick.
And then this is what controls it
and tells us the temperatures.
But inside of here-
You want me to pick you up so you can see?
Yeah, I'm gonna place this here just for a moment.
So this is our bigger kiln.
Let's see.
Call it Biggs.
Hey, they're big.
So it's like a super big, big-
So these are called kiln bricks
and they're basically bricks
that can withstand a whole lot of heat.
And then you can see these little, these stilts down here.
These keep the different shelves separate
so we can layer them in.
They're kind of like shelves in your oven.
And we put all the pieces in there.
And then these wires right here get really, really hot
and heat things up in here.
And so if we're firing something that has not been glazed,
like a piece of clay that's dry,
we'll fire it to cone 04, which is 1,945 degrees.
And that is almost as hot as the inside of a volcano.
And that takes that clay and it rearranges the molecules
so that it turns into what we call bisque.
But if it's glazed, we don't heat it up quite as much.
And I'll show you what we do.
It only goes up to about 1,800 degrees.
This is like a fiery furnace.
Exactly.
Ooh, girl.
So if you look over here, Paisley,
look at all these ones that were painted yesterday.
All of this stuff was painted by people yesterday
and they put all different colors on it.
And see how they look kind of dry and chalky?
But they're not ready to go in the kiln
because if I put them in like this, they won't be shiny.
They need that clear covering.
But what's crazy about it is, look behind you.
That is our glaze.
Does it look clear?
No.
No, not at all.
It's green.
So what I actually do, and this is going to be kind of fun.
See how cute this is with the little animals?
It's so cute.
So I'm going to take this
and I'm going to dunk it in this glaze.
We've got a green plate.
And I covered all of that up.
And I have to kind of take any extra off
because we don't want it to be real thick.
We just want a thin layer.
And even though this is actually clear glaze,
they've put a little bit of green color in it
so I know where I've put the glaze.
So if you look here, see, I didn't glaze this part
because I was touching it.
When this part dries, I'm going to pick it up here
and I'm going to put some green over here.
That way, when it's totally dry,
I'll show you one that was glazed yesterday.
When it's totally dry, it looks like this.
You can touch this one.
Feel that.
Feel how it's kind of soft?
This is basically liquid glass.
And then it dries like this.
And when it gets cooked,
remember like the inside of a volcano,
when it's that hot, this turns into clear glass.
The green burns away like magic.
And then it gives you that really pretty shiny,
like all of those.
Those all started out being covered in green.
So underneath this green,
this has all the colors that they have painted.
This is so amazing.
And then when you come back to pick your pieces up,
they're actually going to be out here on these shelves.
So everything out here was painted by other people
who came in.
See how creative they are?
It's going to feel a lot different.
Do you want to feel that one?
See how nice that feels?
So when you come back to pick up,
we will look for your cat
and it'll be sitting up here with all of the banks.
And then we'll get the box from over here
and we'll give all those
and we'll wrap them up so they're nice and safe.
And you get to take them home forever.
This is what your cat started out as.
Whoa.
Weird, right?
So have you ever seen when it rains a lot
and the ground gets real mushy and muddy?
That's kind of what this is.
This is clay that had lots and lots of water added to it.
So it's really, really wet.
And this gets poured into a mold,
sort of like a Jell-O mold.
I'll touch that.
So this is called Slick.
Just kind of dig your finger in there.
It feels really cool.
Just squish it in there.
It's okay.
Ooh, squishy.
Isn't that cool feeling?
See?
So see how when it's drying on my hands
and as it dries on your hands,
it's really dried out?
It's like that chalky.
Exactly.
All that water that's in it evaporated out.
Now this right here,
sometimes we teach classes
and you get to make something out of clay.
So this is soft clay.
You want to squeeze that?
Feels kind of like Play-Doh, right?
Yeah.
So this is still clay.
Okay.
But it doesn't have as much water as this one.
Okay.
So this is softer.
And this can be formed into whatever you're going to make.
So if you wanted to make a little snake,
we could roll that into a little snake and curl it up.
Wow.
And then there's something that we make.
But before we can actually change it at all,
we have to dry it out.
It has to get totally dry into something we call greenware.
Is it green though?
I don't know what you're saying.
That glaze is called clear glaze, but it's green.
This is called greenware, but it's not green.
So it's called greenware when it,
feel that.
It's dry, right?
It feels like when dirt dries outside
and gets really, really, really dry.
This is fragile.
If I dropped it, it would shatter into lots of pieces.
So what happened is I put this in the kiln,
the one that gets as hot as a volcano.
And then it turns into this.
This is called bisque.
You want to touch that?
This one, it's still kind of fragile,
but I can tap it a little bit.
Listen here.
See?
So they're both hard,
but this one has been baked together
and all those molecules hooked together.
And then this one has been glazed.
And that's why it's all smooth.
But look at the different sizes.
These all started out the same size.
See how this one's taller?
And then when they get cooked,
they get a little smaller and they get a little smaller.
So actually clay shrinks by about 10%.
Shrinks and tightens the molecule.
Yep, the entire process.
Yeah, because the way clay works,
it's different than like a cake that rises.
Sure.
Everything gets more compact.
More crusts and wow.
You roll it up or squeeze it into something
or make it flat.
We can let it dry.
It could go through the process.
Now we just have to wait for our little gifts
to get fired in the kiln.
So we'll head on home and then we'll come back
to pick them up and see how those colors come out
and what they really look like.
And I can't wait to pick up our special gifts.
Meowie.
Meowie, it's me, Paisley.
Hey Paisley, thanks for painting me.
Oh, sis, we got the present for Cotton.
You think he's gonna like that for his gift?
I'm gonna like put a little candle on him.
Oh, that's gonna be lovely.
Here we've got our little present for Cotton.
We got Meowie.
This is gonna be beautiful to hide some treasures in.
Wow.
Oh, it's so like glistening.
This turned out so magical
and those are your little spots you did.
Oh, I've been gathering acorns all morning for the winter,
but I sure wish there was somewhere I could store them.
Cotton, we made you this gift.
What?
Did you make this for me?
Oh, I love it.
Look at this.
I can put all my acorns in there.
Wow, can I see the other side?
Peek-a-boo.
Oh, wow, I love this gift.
That's the most special gift of all.
Can I put it here, Cotton?
Yeah, you wanna help me put my acorns in?
Sure, where are they?
I have some over here on my little table.
Oh, so I have to get them from here
and put them through this little hole?
Yeah, that'll be perfect.
Then I'll have acorns all winter long.
Okay, Cotton, don't smash it.
Never carefully put it down.
Don't grab the grass.
Carefully grab it.
Don't let it slip.
Just grab it carefully.
Put it in.
Cotton did this himself.
I didn't even help.
Cotton, wow, you're gonna have the best winter
with the best nuts.
Wow, this was so much fun.
Thank you so much for coming along with us,
exploring and learning together.
I love spending time with you,
and I'm really proud of you.
Well, this is the end of this video,
but if you're looking for more of our videos,
