Hi friends, welcome back to Dixie's Storytime World,
the place where we read fun kids books that teach big life lessons in a simple way.
Today's book is A Way With Wastefulness and it's packed with three short stories about kids
who learn how to reduce, reuse, recycle, save their money for what matters and make good use
of their time. And kids, here's the best part, after each story there's a fun little activity
you can do, with the help of an adult of course. You can even pause the video and try it out
before we move on to the next story. So get comfy, grab your imagination and let's get started.
Book number one. Let's meet Olivia in Olivia's Recycled Village. Swish, swoosh.
Olivia began painting a picture of a fairy village. Oops, I made a mistake, Olivia said as she threw
away the paper. She started again with new paper but she kept messing up. Before she knew it,
all of her paper and paint were gone. Mom, I need some more paper and paint, said Olivia,
as she threw away another piece of paper. Her mom was shocked to see what Olivia had done.
Look how much you've wasted, said her mom. Olivia explained that she kept starting over
because she messed up. Please don't waste so much. Instead of being wasteful, you should try to
reduce, reuse and recycle. Reduce means to use less. Reuse means to use something again.
Recycle means to make waste into something new that you can use again. An old saying says,
Waste not, want not. You see, if we don't waste what we have, then we won't want more. But what
should I do when I mess up? Let's take a look, said Olivia's mom. Her mom talked to her about
sketching first and colouring later. She also helped Olivia think of creative ways to use her
mistakes. We can't get new art supplies right now, but maybe you can reuse things for your next
project. Olivia began to think of what she could make next. She imagined flying fairies around a
fairy village with her sister. Olivia thought about what she would need. She began collecting
things like cardboard tubes, boxes, cans and bottles. Olivia enjoyed the challenge and she
worked really hard. She found creative ways to use what she had. Her village turned out even
better than she had imagined. When Olivia was finally finished, she showed her mom.
Welcome to the Waste Not, Want Not village. Everyone uses what they have and they are happy.
Wow, Olivia, you worked hard and reused so many things, said her mom. Now Marie and I can play
with it too, said Olivia. Now kids that we've come to the end of story number one, we are at
the activity page. With the help of a grown-up, put this video on pause and discuss the story.
For more information about this book and others, scan the barcode you see here. Now let's get on
to book number two. LeBron's Kite. Look at this one, said LeBron as he and his brother looked
through a catalog. When LeBron turned the page, he saw something he really wanted. Wow, a kite! Mom,
can we get one of these? LeBron asked. That does look like fun. You can use your money to get that
if you want, replied LeBron's mom. LeBron went to his room and grabbed his savings jar. One, two,
three. He began to count how much money he had saved. I only need five more dollars. He put the
money back in the jar. He fell asleep imagining flying a kite. The next day, LeBron's family went
to the store. When they were in the checkout line, he saw a new type of candy bar. That looks
delicious, LeBron thought. Mom, mom, can I buy one of these candy bars? LeBron asked his mom. I thought
you were going to save your money to buy a kite, his mom said. Yes, but this chocolate bar looks so
good, LeBron said, really wanting to try it. You don't want to waste your money, LeBron. You might
enjoy the candy for five minutes, but you will enjoy the kite for a long time, said his mom.
Even though the chocolate bar looked tasty, he knew he would enjoy the kite more. LeBron put the
chocolate bar back on the shelf. When he got home, he thought of ways he could earn extra money to
buy the kite. LeBron had an idea. He was going to start a cleaning business so he could buy his kite
sooner. LeBron did some extra chores for his family and neighbors. He worked very hard. After a while,
LeBron finally earned enough money to buy the kite. His mom took him to the store and he picked
out the color he wanted. LeBron couldn't wait to get home to fly his new kite. Finally, on a day
when the wind was just right, LeBron and Lucas went to fly the kite. With a gust of wind, the kite
soared into the sky. LeBron ran through the field flying his kite. He was glad he saved his money.
Now kids, here we are again. Another activity. With the help of an adult, put this video on
pause and discuss the story. Book number three. Gabby's distraction.
Thud! Gabby closed her math book. Mama, I'm finished with math. May I do my reading outside
today? Gabby asked. Her mom agreed and Gabby ran outside. Gabby found her favorite tree, sat down,
and opened her book. It was a beautiful day outside. She loved the smell of spring. Chirp,
chirp. Gabby heard the sweet sounds of the new baby chicks. Oh, I have to go see how they're
doing, said Gabby. She sat down her book and walked over to the chicks. She spent time holding each
one and naming them. Daisy, Blanca, Fluffy. She didn't realize how much time had passed until...
Gabby! Her mom called across the farm. Oh no, Gabby thought, I didn't finish my chapter.
Gabby grabbed her book and ran to meet her mom on the porch. It's time for your trail
ride with Abuela. Did you finish your reading? Gabby looked down and shook her head. Now kids,
Abuela is a Spanish word for grandmother. Thank you for being honest, but you know the rules.
Because you wasted your time today, you won't be able to go on your trail ride with Abuela.
Gabby was sad. She loved riding her favorite horse, Spot, on the trails with Abuela. She sat
back at the table to finish reading her book. All she could think of was not being able to ride Spot.
A little while later, Abuela walked in the room while Gabby was finishing her reading.
I'm so sorry I can't ride Spot with you today, Gabby said as she gave her a hug. Oh, it's all
right, Gabby. Finishing your homework is important too. I never seem to have enough time, Gabby said.
Abuela smiled and replied. When I have a lot to do, I spend my time wisely by working first
and playing later. Why don't you try to do that tomorrow? Gabby thought about what Abuela said.
She made a plan to work hard to finish her schoolwork so she could ride Spot tomorrow.
The next morning, Gabby rose quickly out of bed. After breakfast, she worked hard to finish all of
her schoolwork. Finished, Gabby shouted as she dropped her pencil and looked at the clock.
I finished early today. May I ride Spot this afternoon? Gabby's mom was impressed and agreed.
Gabby saddled Spot and gave him a hug around his neck. I'm sorry I missed you yesterday,
she whispered to him. She had so much fun riding Spot that afternoon.
Abuela was right, she thought to herself. My day goes better when I spend my time wisely.
So kids, what are we going to do now? Put the video on pause and discuss the story, Gabby's
Distraction. Thanks for joining me today on Dixie's Storytime World. I hope you enjoyed the
