Fruit trees everywhere—nothing is more miraculous in life Go plant a
forest garden
If this doesn’t convince you I don’t know what else could
In total there were 180 meters of hedge that I didn't have to worry about too much
My goal here is to rapidly develop it into an integrated agroforestry system
Let's start practicing agroforestry
It will quickly become a thriving nursery garden
And then suddenly you'll have massive food supplies you don't know what to do with
But I'll explain why the best option is truly the best so you can avoid the mistakes I made
Biological activity is the key behind unlocking all the nutrients and minerals in your soil
This will be the final forest garden update you'll see until
next spring I know I said exactly the same thing last year
I'll show you the newest forest gardens the oldest ones the best-developed areas and also our future plans
Let's go take a look
Everything's been developing at a crazy pace lately
These are deep-field systems
You can see we already have these large trees growing just two and a half years later
It's utterly insane and astonishing how fast trees grow here
When you apply agroforestry principles the transformation is truly mind-blowing
This entire area was once just grass
All you see here is just grass
Long ago
Now it's a diverse chain of woodland gardens
But we'll head to the most recently planted area
It was planted about five and a half months ago
That is the final outcome of a long-term chemical process
We have just completed a grand-scale integrated agriculture-forestry initiative
We have numerous seeds from Brazil sown into these exceptionally
diverse and long rows of trees
making this the newest forest garden
In fact this latest agroforestry system has been
integrated into an area that was previously a cashew orchard
Lemons and lime trees are already growing tall
And everything is thriving beautifully
Young support trees are sprouting around the mature citrus trees
And in between them the sen
Thus from the edge of this tree canopy to the next orange tree
was filled with an enormous diversity of species
In agroforestry regeneration we have pioneer
tree species during the early succession stage
Despite the number of herbaceous plants cut for mulch and soil amendment
nitrogen-fixing trees eucalyptus bananas and payas
and a variety of long-lived trees in the lower layer
The immense diversity of seeds and seedlings
And now there are mushrooms to eat in addition
to harvesting corn and
tomatoes from these systems
It's hard to believe how effortless maintenance
becomes when you work in harmony with natural processes
The crazy thing is how low the
maintenance costs are People don 't believe me when I say
that I'm not out here all day really
It takes far less effort than you might imagine
For a spacious area like this
these rows of trees stretch about 60 meters long
And there are three such rows
In total that's 180 meters of tree line which
I really don't have to worry about too much
My goal here is to rapidly develop it into an integrated
agroforestry system where we can
produce higher-value successions
Papaya bananas kumquats
paw and avocado tons of guava
oranges lemons and walnuts
mulberries and hawthorns
Oh Liu peaches thousands of peaches
grown from seeds tons of peach
slices and peach preserves I brought
along large sacks of Brazilian seeds
When returning from last year's trip
all those seeds were already in the ground
as experiments here
I don't expect all of them to thrive but I'll nurture the ones that
do well Now a few
different eucalyptus varieties
You can see here we have
the ovata or swamp gum and then the one I like best
the nitans or white gum
This is my favorite type because they grow very straight have plenty
of oil in the leaves and generally more leaves than the ovata variety
The tree canopy is
wider providing more material for
cutting and offering better protection against frost
Oh look here you can see we’ve got
a few new mushrooms popping up we’ll pick them right now
Tonight we have edible mushrooms
I should've brought the container along
This is number two
It's truly diverse vast and densely populated
It's the largest system I've ever set up here
A large number of propagation materials are sourced
from the live nursery Specifically from the first batch
most of the propagation materials used in this area originate
aken from previous planting cycles
Therefore begin combining afforestation with reforestation
It will quickly transform into a thriving nursery
And then suddenly
you'll have massive food systems
but you don't know what to do about it
That's number two It's
utterly crazy to look back at the footage before and after this moment
The transformation is truly
impressive and I can't wait to see how it continues
to evolve You
can be certain that in the coming years
When you return you'll find
this forest growing ever more vibrant
increasingly resembling a forest three and a half years old
and what we're about to see next
My heart truly feels happy to witness this
I'd always known that seed number 2 had been waiting for life for many
years so seeing it thrive at
just six months old filled me with excitement
A young ecosystem is emerging and
undoubtedly it will flourish over time
This is the oldest forest I've ever planted here It's been
three and a half years and it already feels like a dense jungle
It brought me back the feeling of being in Brazil
The biggest change this year has occurred in
the layer beneath the ground cover vegetation
Everything here used to be
All the videos you've watched previously
up until the recent renovation last spring
And now take a look
It resembles a vast carpet of vegetation
made up of various types of old edible greens
Mint Vietnamese coriander Okinawa spinach and Myoga ginger taro
These wonderful lower layers all prefer partial shade
and don't compete aggressively for harsh sunlight
They favor the conditions beneath the tree
canopy that the forest currently provides
And right here where I'm scraping
these are actually pathways made of wooden planks
laid down in the spring
When we heavily trimmed the surrounding trees we
installed these wooden pathways
to reduce soil compaction
When I guide tours here I
only show them this path
because I know that continuing to compact the soil
Being in the same spot for too long is absolutely not good
That's why I often walk along this wooden path
to reduce soil compaction
And gradually the wood was digested by
microbes greatly aiding the well-being of a thriving
forest I had eaten mountain paya continuously for many months
Since I returned from Brazil
Basically the avocado trees I pruned quite severely
are growing beautifully
Bananas are growing vigorously
lemons are cheerful macadamias are at
the lower level and
the West Indian cherimoya tree is now in bloom
My crops have grown tall enough to reach
the eaves and the rice fields within just a few years of planting from seed
One of the greatest lessons
I learned from Brazil
In Brazil the standard is 5 meters between tree rows
whereas here it's about 3 to 4
meters As time goes by
I might continue planting
more trees in this lotus
cultivation area to create a natural organic flow
Not just straight lines as the
system evolves but excitement for the future and deep contentment with the garden's current state
because I remember three and a half years ago I
was here with a group of people and
were planting this forest garde
but it was just a tiny row of trees amidst the vast
sea of grass and now there'
s no grass to be seen at all
Only the charming young trees and
the swift-growing giants bearing
fruit abundantly everywhere are
the most wondrous things in life
Go plant a forest garden
If that doesn’t convince you
I don’t know what else could possibly persuade you
because it’s an incredibly special feeling
This forest is life itself so it
should be called the Forest of Life
not merely a food forest because
it holds far more than just food
Here there is a wide variety of
life beneath the surface—medicinal
herbs resources like timber—truly a place beyond imagination
No frost seeps in here anymore
previously just outside the forest garden
you can view photos from the second year
Outside the forest garden areas frost
will definitely occur if temperatures
drop below zero degrees Currently
within this forest garden area
That no longer happens anymore
because the climate has stabilized
These evergreen shrubs
I won't prune them severely until early spring
They’ll help your su stay frost-
free and keep everything warm and
protected That’s the dynamic mechanism you’ve been looking for
It's utterly crazy to think that
just a few years ago this
entire place was just grass Three years ago I had friends giving birth
And they had a child
while I had my own
spiritual offspring—this forest garden
This is way cooler than any three-year-old
I'm just kidding
but honestly it's astonishing what's happened in just three years
Now it's just a layer of
beautiful organic material
and rich fertile black soil—extremely productive
Now let's go to my best area
because what just happened wasn't my best
not what I like most
it was just the oldest one
but I'll explain why the
best is truly the best
and how you can
avoid my mistakes Walk this way
You can see a row of corn plants growing in the
ground and they're nearly as tall as my head
I'll tell you why it
works best—thanks to the
density of tree species not just any trees
but it's the density of the supporting trees
This is when I truly corrected the mistake
I had made during my first year
In my first year I hadn't planted enough support
plants so when I planted
this area I overcompensated
And I planted more than
I knew I'd need which
meant I had the opportunity to harvest early
What I originally planted was
a support tree to rescue every
half meter I'll plant a
hardwood tree Chiluxan Tagasate
and a eucalyptus tree
then another hardwood stilt tree
a eucalyptus
The hardwood stilt tree helps fix nitrogen
Eucalyptus trees live a
little longer and both produce
organic matter recycle nutrients and help form soil
And so the first mistake I made was not planting
enough of those plants I
planted a few here and there
but not in large quantities
In the second year I was concerned about frost damage and wanted to protect against it
so I planted densely
I knew I'd have to cut back
early so I started doing
just that and as a result the land has improved
The trees grew better
the ones planted after one year
were growing faster
due to improved soil conditions
Increase the planting density further
due to excess organic material
When you plant at a
density higher than what you know is necessary
That gives you
the chance to cut
and compost frequently rapidly
returning organic material to
the soil—precisely the purpose
The purpose of planting all these support crops is to build organic
matter in the soil Hello everyone
doing this means planting cover crops
I learned so much from Philip and Jana during my time at
Nonglong Academy and I thought
the feeling was utterly crazy
plant eucalyptus trees one
meter apart then intersperse
hardwood stilt trees every meter but trust me
It's performing wonderfully At this
stage I've already pruned back about
half of the woody sterculia
trees removing one tree every other one
Another tree has been felled to
the ground as organic material
So you can see here there
are tons of branches and logs
and all are enriching our
soil with organic matter
boosting life within it and
helping our plants thrive
Access to nutrients
Biological activity is the key
behind everything
unlocking nutrients
and the minerals in your soil
and thus
nurturing the microbial life is the key
how to feed the microbes
using organic materials
especially the plants
you grow on-site right
on the land and that's why
We plant support crops
densely here and that's why
it works so well—this
is why it's the best area
If I could offer one piece
of advice it would be to plant extra support trees so you're
forced to prune them earlier
You must begin improving the land conditions
This is an update
on the temperate
system established beginning
last winter when we placed cover
crops between the tree rows
In spring through a course we
established a series of diverse
lotus beds in the area where vegetation once
covered the ground
and now we have a diversity
of grasses berries
and some perennial and long-term plants
grown in these paw cultivation beds
the target crop here
in these temperate cultivation beds
is the paw
also known as American paya
so every half
meter I plant a
paya tree and eventually this
place will become
a dense thicket
of berry bushes
and wild herbs
and American paya
on the lower level among the rows of grafted fruit trees
oilseed trees
and support trees
we'll keep watching
to see where this all leads
but so far I am very satisfied with this temperate climate
agroforestry regeneration model
in this region
which includes plums
peach plum cherry blossom
date Japanese dried grape
squid dog whelk
lotus seed
support plant including willow species
eucalyptus trees
acia and poplar trees
I like the kawa poplar trees the most
we also have an abundance of rosemary
sage and many types of berries
The enormous diversity
of that raspberry platter—
Vietnamese guava pomegranate
mulberry and a
host of others—
but I can't recall them all right away
but these are pretty much the main ones
this is the final area
that I'll show you
and what is about to happen
these citrus trees
these mandarin trees
are truly old and past their prime
these trees no longer produce well
and they aren't the healthiest here
but based on what I know
about agroforestry today
I believe
these trees can thrive
ealth and productivity
right here on this small plot
about two years ago
we planted a few eucalyptus trees
and some other plants from seeds
but at a very low density
and very little oversight
but it's an occupying
system a temporary occupying
system because otherwise
It's better than nothing being here
better than just letting weeds grow
when we arrive
and take action next season
We’ll have plenty of organic
material here to work
with and soil conditions
have also begun to improve
even when management is minimal
Yet there remains significant
disease pressure wasted space and untapped potential given the
widespread illness affecting these trees
Given what we currently know about how the forest functions we can enhance
every aspect of this space
This area is the next target to be transformed—watch closely
and within about six months you 'll
witness a complete rebirth
It's truly amazing to look
back on this comparison and
I'll be able to pull
this footage out again in two years
when this entire area was a
vast production forest we would
have seen how much healthier
these trees could have become
These leaves are so weak
and frail—everything will
change very soon just like what happened out there
Here we practice agroforestry
and the trees will gradually
grow stronger this area represents the final stretch
where everything still drips with weakness and illness life
is truly beautiful in the integrated farming and forestry model
See you again soon in Costa Rica Florida Brazil
That was really crazy
