But first, breaking tonight, President Trump's envoys met today with Iranian officials in
Geneva.
Both sides reporting some progress in talks over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.
But there are many details still to be discussed and worked out.
And while the U.S. military buildup in the region continues, Iran made its own provocative
gesture today.
Senior White House correspondent Peter Ducey starts us off tonight live from the North
Lawn.
Good evening, Peter.
Good evening, Brett.
But President Trump's prediction that the Iranians want to make a nuclear deal is holding
up tonight, as Iranian and American diplomats are leaving private meetings with each other
with a new understanding that could avoid a new war.
But war fighters are still being moved into position, just in case.
It was very clear that the president has set some red lines that the Iranians are not yet
willing to actually acknowledge and work through.
According to a U.S. official at today's indirect talks in Geneva, progress was made, but there
are still a lot of details to discuss.
The Iranians said they would come back in the next two weeks with detailed proposals
to address some of the open gaps in our positions.
Until then, the Iranians agree progress has been made.
Good progress was made compared to the previous meeting.
The so-called red lines for President Trump in an Iranian nuclear deal aren't a secret.
It's going to be a good deal, no nuclear weapons, no missiles, no this, no that, all the different
things that you want.
As diplomats from the U.S. and Iran chatted indirectly today, the Iranians closed the
Strait of Hormuz for live fire exercises, and the Ayatollah shared an ominous warning.
They say we sent a ship to Iran.
Of course, a warship is a dangerous vessel, but even more dangerous is the weapon that
can send it to the bottom of the sea.
Despite the threats, the U.S. military is surging additional assets to the Middle East.
The United States has the overwhelming force in the region, and President Trump wants to
use that to induce Iran to come to the negotiating table.
And if negotiations are fruitless, President Trump is open to another Midnight Hammer-style
operation.
The President of the United States is very much trying to find a solution here, whether
it's through diplomatic options or through another option that means that the Iranians
cannot have a nuclear weapon.
If the Iranians eventually agree not to build a nuclear weapon, they're going to want some
sanctions lifted in return.
And tonight, it's just unclear how much sanctions lifting the folks here at the Trump White
House are going to want to do just a few weeks after President Trump called out the Iranian
regime for murdering unarmed protesters.
Brett.
And Peter, on the domestic front, the President's cabinet is planning ahead for the midterms?
Yes.
I just got a text from a senior White House official who is confirming a story that just
crossed in Axios.
Susie Wiles, the White House chief of staff, James Blair, one of her top lieutenants, and
a bunch of chiefs of staff, as well as some cabinet-level secretaries, are meeting right
now on Capitol Hill in private, or I should say near Capitol Hill, in private, to try
to figure out President Trump's messaging strategy, how to sell his accomplishments
and what he plans to do to help their chances in the midterms.
Of course, next week, the State of the Union will be the chance to do that in prime time.
Brett.
We'll see you right here.
