Injured Cormorant ‘Admits Itself’ to German Hospital

Staff at the Gesundheit Nord hospital in Bremen, Germany, received an unexpected visitor on Sunday when an injured cormorant appeared to seek medical attention by pecking on the glass door of the emergency room. According to the staff, the bird even went to the second entrance of the hospital when it was not immediately noticed.
Juliane Andreas, the nurse on duty, was among those who finally noticed that the bird had been injured by a fishing hook stuck in its lower beak. Andreas and her colleagues called the local fire brigade, who often deal with incidents involving wild animals. According to Andreas, the bird calmly allowed the firefighters to catch and hold it.
The hospital staff and the fire brigade gathered in the entrance of the emergency department to first cut and then remove the fishing hook. “We were able to open the bird’s beak, and it cooperated nicely. We could look into its mouth, and nothing was injured,” Andreas said.
Head of the emergency department Fabian Lieber said there was no way of knowing if the cormorant really knew what he was doing when he turned up at the hospital, but it was a happy coincidence that they were able to help an animal that had come to harm.
The fire brigade later released the bird back into the wild.
