President Trump GM s Mary Barra meet in the Oval Office on Thursday
Feb 18, 2026 #Marybarra
Well, GM's future in the spotlight at the White House tonight.
CEO Mary Barra is quoted as saying a private meeting with the president was productive and valuable.
It comes as GM takes the lead in union talks and heat for plant closings.
7 Action News reporter Jim Kirchner is live at the GM Pontiac Metal Center.
So what are workers saying to you, Jim?
Eighty workers were given layoff notices here in March tied to GM plant moves.
Is President Trump going to help you guys keep jobs?
I'd like to see him try to help us, but you never know.
I don't know. It's up to the company. They're going in a different direction.
President Trump has tweeted criticism about GM at least a dozen times since last November
when the company said it was unallocating product in four U.S. plants, two of them here in Metro Detroit.
In November, Trump said, very disappointed with General Motors and their CEO Mary Barra
for closing plants in Ohio, Michigan and Maryland.
Nothing being closed in Mexico and China.
The U.S. saved General Motors and this is the thanks we get.
The first plant closing was in March, Lordstown, Ohio.
Pictures of more than a thousand workers showed their pain as the last Chevy Cruze rolled off the line.
Trump tweeting, just spoke to Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, about the Lordstown, Ohio plant.
I'm not happy that it is closing when everything else in our country is booming.
And just a week ago, Trump tweeting, General Motors, which was once the giant of Detroit,
is now one of the smallest auto manufacturers there.
They moved major plants to China before I came into office.
A lot of people in here are upset about it. They've been wondering if we're going to be next.
Is Trump your friend right now?
I'm a Democrat.
All GM workers are also concerned about their next UAW contract.
From the handshake start of talks in July to the union picking GM to be the lead among the big three,
a veteran worker here says he's concerned about not getting status reports.
I'm going to tell you, I've been here for over 40 years. I've never seen it this quiet before.
The current contract expires next weekend, September the 14th.
As Carolyn said, the only comment about the closed meeting at the White House came from Mary Barr,
calling it productive and valuable.
So far nothing from Trump, but I just checked his Twitter.
Live in Pontiac, Jim Kertzner, 7 Action News.
Jim, thank you for the live report.
