It really was a terrifying ending to our trip..but.. It’s the final motorbike ride on our tour of Vietnam, and oh boy way this full of twists and turns! After 3 weeks of riding we had to make a decision. We boarded a night train in Da Nang and rode it to Nha Trang, picked up our motorbikes and on our final ride something happened that will change the way we look at life forever.
What is happening guys? We're Craig and Amy and you are watching Kingin' It.
This is the last episode of the series and this really isn't how we wanted it to end.
After an unbelievable three weeks of riding motorbikes through Vietnam,
this was the final stretch.
So far we've been high up in the mountains on the Ha Giang loop.
We'd had our fair share of happy water.
Happy water anyone?
We'd swam in lakes and rivers.
We'd ridden some stunning and also some challenging roads
and we had been living a bucket list trip that we'd all dreamed of for years.
As with most of our adventures, the end of each mission never ends up running smoothly
and this one was no exception.
Just makes me grateful that we're here you know.
Part 1. Why are you sweating on my pillow?
Arriving at the train station in Da Nang, we were all shattered
and anticipating the night train ahead.
A few days ago, Amy had booked the train but there were only three beds and one seat.
Because we're absolute legends, we gave James and Chloe the two beds
and we were going to attempt to squeeze into one with such good friends.
As we got to our cabin, there was a surprise waiting for us.
There's someone in there.
Okay, tell him to move.
These are toilets.
Oh dear.
Okay, so we're not actually sat together.
Oh my god.
They're cosy little cabins and unfortunately there is somebody in our bed at the moment
but I think she knows what she needs to get up because she's not in the right seat at all.
So I think we're just going to try and top and tail rather than splitting up.
After using each other's feet for pillows and getting about two hours sleep,
our new cabin family decided they wanted an early morning.
We then had a phone call about our motorbikes.
Yeah, if that's the only time.
Can we come swimming on now?
Come on.
Thank you very much.
Bikes have arrived.
Oh, they weren't even supposed to call us.
That's cool.
I know.
Oh, that's good news, isn't it?
Great timing.
Without our track record, we wouldn't even be sure this is going to work.
We thought they might go to a different country.
10 hours later and our train rolled into Nha Trang.
So last night was pretty bad.
We were in with a bunch of chatty Cathy's who decided that 2am was a great time to have a conversation.
If they weren't talking really loud, they were snoring
and if they weren't snoring, their phones were ringing
and they were staring at them for about 30 seconds before they answered.
And if they weren't doing that, they were just letting off some violent fluffs.
I had earplugs in, I didn't hear that.
It was aggressive.
It was a mad night.
The bed wasn't even like a standard single.
It was smaller than that and it was hard as rock, of course.
We're in Vietnam.
So yeah, we've got a couple of bad backs and bad hips today
but buzzing, absolutely buzzing that the bikes have made it here.
How did you guys sleep?
We slept quite well.
In your individual beds?
We do feel bad for you guys but...
Whatever.
It had to be something, didn't it?
We're like, oh great service.
So there's one bike there and our bike is in the luggage room
and they've run out of electric so the door won't open.
So she said come back at 2pm, it's 10 o'clock.
Oh no, we can't do that.
And I said no, we need to leave now.
So she said wait 30 minutes.
Okay, fingers crossed they can get it open.
There's always something in there, always.
They've got the electric turned on.
Oh, they did today.
I love her.
She's got a little blanket on, who's this?
They really do take good care of them, don't they?
The only problem is where we started with just two small backpacks,
we've grown considerably.
I'm not sure how we're going to get all that on the back of one bike.
All right, I think we're going to topple over, Craig.
Lost everything we own.
Strapped on, maybe not so good in tights.
I think we needed that break as a team just for morale.
Because yeah, it is massive.
But we actually cut out 500 kilometers, which is a huge chunk
and probably would have taken us three days.
We would have missed Hoi An.
We probably would have just driven every day.
So I'm buzzing to be getting back on the bike now.
I've actually missed it.
It is so fun but when you're doing it all the time
and you've got a sore arse, you just can't take it.
You can't take it for what it is.
So yeah, I'm buzzing to just rev it up now and get back on the road.
But rev them we did not.
Our bikes had been drained of petrol.
So the next thing we had to do was walk them to a petrol station.
This isn't dangerous at all.
That's 400,000 for 12 liters.
So that's like £12 for 12 liters.
Pound a liter.
All right, we're back in business.
Before we did our next huge drive to Dalat,
we needed a big refuel and we found this belter spot that had a vegan buffet.
Part two, the moment that changed everything.
We're going straight back in to an epic drive.
Still got your little smelly cohort on, have you?
I slept in this.
Drag race in three, two, one.
So good to be back in the mountain.
Isn't it so nice?
For a minute, I was thinking,
why are we doing this trip when we're on the highways?
I was like, what are we doing this for?
Like it was grim for most of it.
But now that we're back up in the mountain,
just sliding around these roads, it's just bloody gorgeous.
And it's honestly so much fun.
It just gives you such like clarity.
You've got so much time to just think about your thoughts and,
you know, be at one with yourself and just talk life through with yourself.
It's really, really fun.
This is why we came to this country, man.
Vietnam, what a beauty.
Heavens are about to open, so we're putting some waterproofs on.
Tramp's got a bit stuck over here, look.
Help me.
Don't think it's going to fit, babe, to be honest.
As we were riding the wave of excitement of the drive through the mountains,
we came to a roadblock.
And as bikes, we were able to weave through the traffic.
What we saw was something that we will never unsee.
A scooter carrying two passengers had collided head on with a truck.
These two poor souls had met their end.
And just moments before, they were doing exactly what we were doing.
We knew riding had its risks.
And when you are driving, there are always calculated risks.
But you can never trust anyone on the road,
and you never know what's around the corner.
We pulled over in shock and we cried.
We hugged each other really tightly
and decided to continue on slow and steady to Dalat.
What it made me realize is how much I loved everyone in that moment.
Amy, James and Chloe, our squad who had taken the plunge together
and decided to take on this challenge.
That night, I was grateful for where we'd been and the journey.
But more than ever, I was grateful that we were all healthy
and that we were all alive.
Seeing death and seeing it so abruptly reminded me of my fragile mortality.
And it was a huge reminder to never take any moment or any person for granted.
It was just so upsetting for so many reasons.
Obviously, just seeing people dead is like horrendous on its own.
But it kind of just puts this whole trip like into perspective
or gives you a new perspective on this trip.
Because, you know, one minute we're like,
yeah, get motorbikes and drive the length of Vietnam.
And then you see that and you're like,
do I even want to ever drive a motorbike again after seeing that?
And it's just like, yeah, it just, it makes you think about everything.
Like, who were they?
What were they doing 10 minutes before?
You know, they're going to have to tell their families.
And it was just, it just, I think when you see death like that,
it just, it's like it's a big reset button.
And it was just so upsetting to see.
And it just makes me grateful that we're here, you know, because they're not anymore.
And it could happen like that, you know.
So give your mates and your family big hugs and just tell them you love them
because you never know what could happen.
So yeah, we've got one more drive to do now to Ho Chi Minh.
And it's like six hours and we're supposed to be doing it tomorrow.
But after seeing that, me and James are just like, what do we do now?
Yeah.
But yeah, we told the girls not to look and I tried not to,
but just human instinct made me look.
And I wish I never now because I'll never unsee that.
But yeah, I just feel for their families now.
We're just going to have to drive super careful now.
I'm really relieved we've got one drive left now.
If you want to do it.
Not really.
But there's no way of not doing it because we have to get back to Ho Chi Minh.
There's no bike shop here.
If there was, I would drop it off now.
Yeah.
But maybe it's just because it's so fresh seeing that, you know.
If you saw a car crash, you'd probably feel the same about driving, you know.
But yeah.
Anyway, we need to get some food.
But we found the hotel.
It's really nice and it's really cheap.
Part 4.
Bus Wankers.
Morning all.
Coming at you from Nha Trang at 6.58am.
Today's the last day.
We're going to be packing the bike.
It seems pretty unreal really.
We can't quite believe it.
Chloe and James are leaving before us.
We've had to get to Ho Chi Minh like three days before we actually fly out.
So we'll be there today.
Which means that we've actually done Vietnam in three weeks.
Not four.
So we'll get some time to chill when we get to Ho Chi Minh.
Good morning from Vietnam.
We made our way to a bus station where we were told we would be able to get a ticket
to Ho Chi Minh and load the bikes on the bus.
We were in two minds about what to do.
But we wanted to see what the options were anyway.
But it's up to you.
I think after that it's not going to be a fun enjoyable ride is it?
So I feel like if we just send them we can relax on the bus
and then at least we can just get to Ho Chi Minh and finish on a high and just enjoy the city.
We want to take a motorbike on the bus.
Is it possible?
Motorbike not together.
So it comes to the express delivery part of the train station
and the lady's like yeah no problem we can put the motorbikes on a separate bus to you guys.
If you put them on they'll go about three o'clock today
and then they'll arrive at 8am tomorrow.
And then she's like can I have the green card?
Which is what you get when you buy a bike.
Obviously we're renting these bikes so we've only got the green card as a copy.
And we've unloaded all the bikes and she said we don't accept that.
Like unless you've got the real green card we cannot send them for you.
So we're having to load back up.
She's given us the name of another bus service that might possibly help us out with this.
So it's strange because it was fine on the train they just accepted the copy
but here it obviously it seems a bit more like they need the real thing.
So load them back up.
We loaded the bikes back up and rode about 20 minutes to another bus station.
We were hoping they could help us out.
Cross all your bloody fingers James.
This might just work.
We've shown him the copies of the blue card and I think he said yeah.
So fingers crossed.
Come on please.
How's it going?
I mean it always sounds promising but there's always something that comes up last second so.
I am not taking those bags off until we know for sure.
You might all just be watching this being like you've driven so far already
like why don't you just do the last drive.
It does seem mad but like none of us kind of feel like we want to do it.
I kind of feel like we've not lost the love for it but it just doesn't feel right.
I always feel like it doesn't feel right you shouldn't do it.
So that's why we're not doing it.
All right guys load them off.
Do you mean unload them?
Yeah.
We were told that we could get a bus that morning and ship our bikes to Ho Chi Minh
then pick them up the next day.
Is the toilet on the bus?
No.
Oh.
We'd found our guy who helped us ship the motorbikes.
I knew I liked this guy because of his shoes.
And we bought our bus tickets for an eight-hour bus to Ho Chi Minh City.
This bus was so posh we even had to whip our shoes off and pop them in little bags.
This is not what I expected.
This is amazing.
So this is what a sleeper bus looks like.
Loads of legroom down there.
Got your own TV.
There's a light.
We've got USB charging stations.
Little spot for whatever.
Drinks holder.
And the seat goes all the way back.
There you are.
Little vent here for some air conditioning.
Then you've got curtains as well.
I've ended up with a guy who's just playing TikTok or the news as loud as he wants.
So that's fun.
But looking forward to just being able to relax now while we're in Ho Chi Minh.
Watching the streets from the window we knew we had made the right decision.
It rained the whole time and there wasn't really much to look at.
Amy and I came up with a plan to surprise James and Chloe
with a few nights in a proper posh hotel.
And of course we had to wear our swanky outfits for a music video slash photo shoot.
Part five.
The final ride.
In a taxi.
Hopefully about to pick up the motorbikes to do our last drive.
I think, I think this is the spot.
You have a pen?
So do you have two motorbikes here?
Yeah.
Yes.
There's one.
And there's two.
They made it.
Right let's go drop them off.
And this is...
You have to come and see Vietnam.
Yeah.
Whether it's on a motorbike or on a train or on a bus.
Yeah.
It's just the most satisfying country to travel through.
Food's amazing.
The people are so nice and helpful and so just...
Yeah.
It's so stunning man.
All right last 500 meters babes.
That's okay you guys can keep...
Cheers guys.
Well done everyone.
Cheers.
We made it team.
How do we feel?
Great.
Relieved.
Yeah a bit sad.
Relieved is a good one.
We were like...
I just want to say thanks to you guys for like taking this on with us as well.
Because it's been so good even though it's been like really difficult.
Yeah yeah.
Thanks for having us because yeah it's been great.
It's been hard but it's been a trip of a lifetime still.
And it would have been...
We wouldn't have done it without you.
I love you guys.
I'm absolutely starving.
Like I've got nothing to say because I'm so angry.
So can we eat something?
There's always one of us who's angry.
This time it's only...
All good things come to an end.
So it was time to say goodbye to Chloe and James.
Have a good evening ma'am.
Take it easy mate.
So good man.
Love you mate.
Take it easy.
That's it I'm good.
Yeah I love you man.
Bye mate.
It's been so fun yeah.
So fun.
Thank you.
No worries.
No worries at all.
Safe flight home.
Bye guys.
Oh my god.
Just me and you babes.
Just me and you.
There's only one way to end this trip.
A photo on a tuk-tuk.
Right first off we're in District 1.
Apparently Saigon's got like 25 districts.
Traditional seats.
Make sure they look lovely.
So we have here the green papaya salad.
Finishing our time in this country on this food tour
reminded us of how beautiful the people of Vietnam are.
We laughed all night.
Ate some exceptional foods.
Amazing.
And learned so much more about the Vietnamese culture.
This one is banana wine.
Smells potent.
It's good juice huh?
Good juice.
I wish we'd have done this food tour before we did this whole motorbike trip in Vietnam.
Yeah.
Because you've driven past all of these fruits and probably would have missed them.
But we have missed them.
Yeah.
But now we finally get to try them.
That's good.
Yeah.
Here we've got a fake crab soup.
They've made it out of tofu and mushroom.
Like look at that.
You can get the colour there and you can see it looks just like crab.
Oh that's really flavoursome.
This whole place is vegan.
This is like a beef brawl they call it.
All right Pumbaa's just told us that this next stop is a bit of a secret.
Nobody really knows about it unless you're a local.
So looks good.
We're in the back streets lads.
Oh yeah.
That's banging.
So in Vietnam it's considered polite to use two hands when you're eating.
So you can't be eating like this.
One hand off the table.
No.
Because you get smacked up around your head.
Yeah.
All I'm going to say is if you come to Vietnam, if you're in Ho Chi Minh,
please come and do this tour just to try the food for yourself.
It is mad tasty.
See you again.
Thank you so much for the delicious food.
This is the last stop of the tour.
9pm.
Technically past bedtime but we're hard, aren't we?
We're hard and we're food drunk.
Yeah.
So the last stop we've saved the best for last.
Obviously dessert.
It's not going to be durian is it?
No it's not durian.
Oh my god.
Yes.
Brilliant.
Thank you guys.
This was one hell of a trip to remember.
Filled with so many highs, so many life lessons and uncountable blissful moments.
To sum up what it feels like to see a place like this with the people that you love,
it really is one of the greatest parts of life.
We'll be able to reminisce on this trip for years to come, look back at how far we came
and we will be reminded of what an unbelievable and unique country Vietnam really is.
