Welcome to "What is a Quadrilateral?" with Mr. J! Need help with quadrilaterals? You're in the right place!
Whether you're just starting out, or need a quick refresher, this is the video for you if you're looking for help with quadrilaterals. Mr. J will go through the definition of a quadrilateral and some examples. If you’re learning about polygons, 2D shapes, or classifying quadrilaterals, this video will help build a strong foundation.
Hopefully this video is what you're looking for when it comes to quadrilaterals.
Have a great rest of your day and thanks again for watching! ✌️✌️✌️

Welcome to Math with Mr. J.
In this video, I'm going to cover what a quadrilateral is.
Now looking at the word quadrilateral, we have quad, which means four,
and lateral, which means side.
So a quadrilateral is just a shape with four sides, a four-sided shape.
And quadrilaterals also have four angles and four vertices.
But more specifically, a quadrilateral is a four-sided polygon.
So quadrilaterals are a type of polygon.
Now remember, a polygon is a shape that's flat, closed, and has all straight sides.
So a quadrilateral needs to be all of these things.
For example, let's take a look at a few polygons.
Notice how all three of these shapes are flat, closed, and have straight sides.
So are these polygons?
Yes.
And all of these are four-sided polygons.
So these are all quadrilaterals.
Now let's take a look at a few examples of shapes that aren't polygons, that aren't quadrilaterals.
Looking at those bottom shapes from left to right here, the first shape isn't flat.
It's 3D.
The second shape isn't closed.
There's an opening.
And then the third shape doesn't have all straight sides.
One of the sides is rounded.
So all three of these are not polygons.
These are not quadrilaterals.
Quadrilaterals and all polygons need to be flat, closed, and made up all straight sides.
Now to wrap things up here, let's take a look at six more examples of quadrilaterals.
Take a look.
All six of these are four-sided polygons.
They are all quadrilaterals.
Now do all quadrilaterals look the same?
No.
We have names for different types of quadrilaterals,
and we're able to classify quadrilaterals based on their characteristics.
For example, characteristics like right angles, parallel sides, or sides that are the same length.
We'll go over different types of quadrilaterals in another video.
That link is in the description.
For now, we should know that quadrilaterals are four-sided polygons.
So there you have it.
There's what a quadrilateral is.
I hope that helped.
Thanks so much for watching.
Until next time, peace.
