Hello listeners good day
It's a pleasure to meet you again on the Minghui Radio's Divine Culture Program
Time flies
In the blink of an eye
we've welcomed the Lunar New Year once more
At this moment of bidding farewell to the
old and welcoming the
new let us explore the
origin of fortune—welcoming blessings at the
start of the New Year opening the door to
good luck greeting spring with blessings
as the new year arrives and all things renew with families posting the character fortune
and exchanging greetings
during New Year visits
The character fu symbolizes
good fortune
blessings fortune
virtue wisdom and the arrival
of blessings in the heart as the new year approaches
it expresses beautiful wishes
and hopes Chinese fu culture
has a long and
enduring history
In the oracle bone script the
character for "fortune" (福) has on its
left side the symbol "shi " representing
a sacred altar and on its right
side the character "fu " depicting
two hands holding a wine vessel
together they convey the meaning of
people offering wine in ritual sacrifice
Offering fine wine as an
offering to the deities expressing
gratitude for a year of favorable weather and harmonious
天地 the Chinese people have
long been a nation that reveres
the unity of heaven and humanity and respects the divine
Believing that heaven above watches
over us and that good deeds are
rewarded while evil ones are punished
it was only natural for ancient people to revere heaven and offer
sacrifices to the gods which is
why such practices were deeply
rooted in traditional Chinese culture
There is a very important tradition—
worship—recorded as having established
a complete ceremony of heaven worship
in China as early as the Zhou Dynasty
codified in the Rites of Zhou which
then formed a formal ritual tradition
passed down for over
two thousand years:
worship of heaven
and worship of earth
Ancestral worship
From emperor to commoner
forming a complete
pure heavenly ritual ancestral culture system
Sacrifice to all deities during the month of the腊
Gratitude to heaven and
earth at the turn of the year
Blessings for the New Year
The original meaning was
As the old year draws to a close and the new
one approaches offerings are made to the deities
and ancestral spirits in gratitude
for their protection throughout the past year the twelfth
month of the lunar calendar each
year is known as the Month of腊
In Shuowen Jiezi the original meaning of "La" refers to the ritual held at
the easternmost point of the Hou three
xū where a grand sacrifice was made to
all spirits this means that in ancient times during the twelfth month of the
lunar calendar a collective offering was
made to various deities known as "La "
The entire month of the lunar year was enveloped in
a profound sense of sacredness with people speaking
carefully and acting with deep reverence even during
tasks like cleaning and
crafting sacrificial offerings
There is a solemn sense of ritual once the twelfth month
begins people refrain from
speaking ill-omened words and must
behave with reverence In traditional culture rituals serve
an educational function shaping
customs and guiding the people
Consider ritual sacrifice the foundation
of education and the purpose of education to
be reverence for the divine as recorded in
the Strategies of the Warring States the Zhao
Chapter: educating the people to observe proper rites throughout the long course of
history this has continuously enriched the
meaning of honoring and venerating the divine
Putting up spring couplets paper cutouts
and New Year paintings setting off
firecrackers and paying New Year visits
from offering sacrifices to Heaven
and Earth in the twelfth lunar month to bidding farewell to the Kitchen God
replacing door gods' pictures inviting
the God of Wealth and honoring ancestors
Worshipping deities and other traditions
People experience this solemn and ritual-filled
rite every year from childhood through adulthood
Immersed in the atmosphere day by day
They are gradually shaped by the
熏陶 of divine cultural heritage
Veneration of heaven earth and spirits
fosters self-restraint transforms evil
into good restores
the people's hearts to
righteousness instills reverence for the
natural order and cultivates gratitude
for all living things thereby earning
abundant blessings from heaven and earth
favorable weather and bountiful harvests
The greatest expression of ritual is
reverence worship is a vital part of China 's
divine-revealed culture the Rites of
Zhou record that the chief official
of the capital city prepares for
sacrificial rites the Zuo Commentary also
states that sacrifice is a matter of
paramount importance to the state—meaning tha
The taxes collected by the state
are primarily used for rituals
nothing is more important in governing
the world than proper sacrifice
So in traditional culture how
does one achieve sincerity and
reverence in ritual offerings
History has left us with many answers
A classic example of giving thanks to
heaven and earth without seeking anything in
return is found in ancient teachings: "
The greatest virtue in ritual is reverence
" Whenever Emperor Wen of Han conducted
the state's grand sacrificial ceremonies
he would instruct the ceremonial officials
to show reverence without making requests
That is through grand
ceremonies honoring the divine
and expressing sincere
reverence yet without seeking
blessings or protection from
the deities—Emperor Wen of
Han revered heaven and earth
following the natural order
The era of prosperity known as the
Wenjing Golden Age had long since
ended and during the Kaicheng reign of Emperor Wenzong of Tang after
prolonged drought with no rain he
summoned officials from all prefectures
to the Zichen Hall within the palace
to perform rituals and pray for rain
The Emperor's face was filled with
displeasure and concern which all
the ministers could plainly see one
minister dared to inform the Emperor
about the content of the new
astronomer's report stating that the prolonged drought was a reflection
of celestial signs and heavenly omens
Please Your Majesty do not
overburden your mind Emperor
Wenzong solemnly declared
"As sovereign of the realm
if I lack the
virtue to protect
my people thereby causing
this great drought and now
face Heaven's rebuke then "
If it does not rain within
three days I shall abdicate
the throne and appoint a wise
new ruler to lead the realm
upon hearing this all the ministers wept bitterly and
each confessed their own faults
fearful of the consequences
That very night a sudden
downpour fell drenching the land
of Han Emperors Wen of Han
and Wen of Tang though they
could commune with divine
spirits and reflect deeply in
sincerity did not recklessly
seek blessings from heaven
Yet blessings naturally descended
history often reveals two sides
as during the Northern and Southern
Dynasties when Emperor Wu of the
Zhou dynasty banned all rituals
demolished temples and burned down
sacred sites leading to the
destruction of many
mountain shrines
At the time widespread drought
struck many regions and Yu Yi was
appointed governor of An Prefecture
where all the water sources had
dried up according to long-standing
custom people were to go to Bai
Zhao Mountain to pray for rain so
Yu Yi arrived at the ruined temple
He prayed for rain on behalf of the people and that very day
heavy rain poured down yet other regions
remained as parched as before Because
of his intercession rain came and
the people deeply appreciated his
kindness The worship of the Five
Emperors was subsequently abolished
The ancient sages established
models and rituals for worship
disrespecting deities and
buddhas not only misleads and
harms the people but also
brings ruin upon oneself—dying
suddenly at just thirty-five
years old Return to tradition
Hearts returning to righteousness—
history is the wisdom left for future
generations In ancient
times from emperors
down to common people all revered Heaven
as supreme taking it as the foundational
point for observing the patterns
of existence Thus emerged the concept
of harmony between Heaven and humanity
The emergence of ritualized order
brought about a
series of ceremonies
honoring heaven and the divine transforming traditional
festivals into
occasions imbued with special social
and cultural significance seamlessly
woven into daily life through a
constellation of beliefs and customs
All are connected to rituals
mythology or Buddhist Daoist and
spiritual beliefs if an object
loses its traditional essence and
retains only its surface form it
becomes like a tree without roots
or water without a source—this
is the essence of fortune culture
Rooted in deep cultural
heritage yet today having lost
the sacred and solemn essence
of traditional culture due
to decades of
CCP-led atheistic indoctrination everything
now focuses on progress and
prioritizes profit above all
People grow increasingly distant from one another the
true meaning of fortune
becomes distorted replaced by a
symbol where the radical of
the character for "fortune"
is depicted as a dragon-headed
cane signifying longevity
A golden gourd symbolizes the replacement
of wealth luck people paste the
character for happiness not merely to
seek wealth and fortune
but originally the
true meaning of "happiness" lies in
reverence and gratitude toward the natural
order teaching people through ritual
traditions to cultivate awe and respect
Discerning right
from wrong where does
blessing come from The ancients said
Only by returning to traditional
culture can one truly
understand the origins and
evolution of divine-inspired culture
thereby recognizing the profound
depth and genuine meaning
of Chinese civilization That concludes today's program
Wishing all our listeners
joy and blessings in
this time of renewal
gratitude to
Heaven returning
to tradition and truly
becoming fortunate souls
blessed by God—thank you
for listening goodbye
