The Church of Saint-Vorles-Domine-Châtillon on the Seine for over 1 000 years
Perched on a promontory that was once the fortified heart of the city
Its story begins long before the current structure
By the 9th century a first sanctuary was built to house the relics of Vorles
A deacon from the sixth century whose veneration is deeply rooted in Châtillonnet
The presence of these relics draws pilgrims
and imbued the site with a religious significance that would continue to grow
In the early 11th century the bishop of Langres decided to build a new church
larger and more substantial becoming a collegiate church served by canons
This Romanesque structure one of the oldest in Burgundy
stands out for its simplicity and architectural strength
and its two towers watching over the Seine Valley
The location of Saint-Vorles is not only spiritual but also strategic
Just a short distance away stood the castle of the Dukes of
Burgundy followed by that of the Bishops of Langres
making the church as much a religious as a political symbol it
played a role in asserting episcopal authority in a contested region
and its placement on the rocky outcrops gave it the appearance of a sacred fortress
Over the centuries the structure underwent various transformations
rough periods of restoration and decline it has
never ceased to serve as a landmark for the residents
Its silhouette visible from afar has accompanied the
city's story from medieval fairs to modern upheavals
Our visit is now over
